A Simple DIY Jewelry Display

Something I don't do often enough is wear jewelry.  I never have been a jewelry crazy gal, but when I started having babies, and then watched kidlets daily for a couple of years, the number of times I actually wore jewelry in a given year could be counted on one hand.  I typically would wear stud earrings since those were easiest to keep away from little fingers, but now that my kids are older, I have been getting the urge to start branching out a bit.

The one thing I noticed however, is that I never really had a solid system for storing the jewelry I WANT to wear.  As they say, it was also out of site, out of mind.  So a little over a year ago when I created my jewelry earring display, I found myself wearing earrings more often!  Funny how that works.

So I decided to reinvent the jewelry storage/display wheel for the 17,489th time, and finally get the rest of my jewelry out of hiding.

Since I already had a great system for the earnings, I wanted something that would work in a similar fashion, and mimic what was already in place.

In fact, I removed the earrings from the original frame and reused that for my necklaces since I liked the size.  I only have a few necklaces and they are fairly basic, the easiest and simplest solution for me was to just add a cheapo piece of cork behind the decorative sheet metal.

I affixed the cork with some packing tape, and then held it all down nice and sturdy by placing a piece of cardboard to the back with the frame clips.

I also Mod Podged some wrapping paper to the matte of the frame, to freshen it up a little bit.  All of these simple steps gave me a glorified cork push pin jewelry board!

I found the super cute fabric covered push pins from See Jane Work, and keep them in a small dish near the frame to make this display versatile as I add to my collection.

The earrings were then moved to a slightly smaller photo frame, I just removed the matte to allow for more hanging space.  There is no cork behind the earrings so that they can just easily dangle.

Oh, and if you are wondering where this is in our home, it's in a corner of our dressing room, which is right off of the master bedroom.

The ceramic egg tray holds a few rings, stud earrings and extra backs, pins and some other miscellaneous pieces.

I found the hand from Urban Outfitters, it makes a great place to hold my bracelets and pop my wedding ring while I snooze...

When I started the project, I weeded out anything I don't wish to wear any longer and placed those items in my donate bag.  Now, all that I own, is out where I can see it and nothing is tucked away.  Nothing will be forgotten and I can now give myself a little more bling when I dress each morning.  You know, because a stay at home bloggy mom should always be sporting some jewels...

Is there anything you have out of sight, therefore out of mind that you are itching to dig out and begin using?  Or feel free to share how do you display your girly gems, I would heart to know what else is working for my friends!

Pssst!  The display was working great, I just wanted to simplify the look a bit so I swapped out the metal overlay with some fabric and I love it even more!  YAY for simple updates!

    1. The guest room was our master bedroom for a long while, but now that the kiddos are older, we made the decision to move it downstairs when we finished the lower level. We had a ton of spare space down there but were really limited with how it could be used {since there was only a window at the front of the house and not in the back}, so we turned half of the room into a bigger master bedroom and utilized the other half as a dreamy closet space/room for our treadmill, that we never had on the original floor.

  6. Another similar and inexpensive way to display earrings is to find a large, inexpensive picture frame (hello, Salvation Army) and a swatch of lace large enough to cover the inside of the frame. You can do any combo of colors (different lace, and paint the frame). I made one for my mum for her birthday for less than five bucks!

  11. I actually just did this last week with my jewelery. I'm sporting a new short haircut, which needs some bling to make it look girly, but I kept wearing the same thing because I couldn't get to the rest. Now, a martini glass on my dresser holds my earrings and rings (posts in the cup matched with buttons, and dangles hung over the edge) and an antique key hook holds necklaces and bracelets. I'm loving it!

  13. Super cute! I feel the same way...if it's burried in a box, I never wear it- but if it's out on display I can grab it easily (and put it away easily). I reworked a random tree sculpture that I had lying around and it works amazingly for all of my favorite pieces.

  15. Just last week I decided to organize my earrings- they were hard to find and I wasn't wearing them because I couldn't see it. I was in dollar tree and got a pencil holder similar to this one found at Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/Rolodex-Distinctions-Jumbo-Metal-and-Wood-Pencil-Cup-Black/14927598) but for $1.00. I placed all my earrings around the cup and used the inside for chapstick, a small lotion and fingernail clippers. I love it. I keep it in the bathroom closet and its easy to grab in the mornings. I would love to do a picture frame later on, but with my 17 month old, this is the best and easiest way for me!

Cute jewelry organizer! :) I just wanted to share that I don't have anything as pretty as yours for my jewelry, but I happen to have a obsession with jewelry and have acquired quite a bit. I actually use inexpensive tackle boxes or bead boxes from Michaels to store necklaces, etc. It's compartmentalized, so nothing gets tangled. Hope it helps!

    1. Hi & thank you!

Don't be too hard on yourself, I too, get sleepy! :) It's not easy being full time mommy and squeezing everything in.

Also try and remember this is now my job. I have a few afternoons each week in which the boys are all in school which helps. And my husband is not deployed so I have a lot of help from him, we are a team and share the responsibilities.

Lastly, the projects and blog are my personal time. I love doing it, I ensure I make time for it. It's important to me {for sanity sake really}, so have my own passion and hobby above and beyond being a mom.

See if there are small projects you can do with your kids. Sometimes while I project or craft, they are doing their own crafts right next to me.

I have four children, and for YEARS it was pretty much stud earrings and rings. BUT, since I do make jewelry, and my youngest is a jr in high school, I do wear quite a bit of jewelry, and have a lot of it too. This makes a great display for my personal stash of jewelry and also a beautiful display for the stuff I want to sell.

    1. We originally did it because we were finishing the lower level and with window placement, we were limited with how we could use the space. Our set up allowed us to add a larger bedroom with a large dressing/closet area that we couldn't have in the main level. It's working pretty great for us, but it is something that took a little getting used to for me. Our kids are five and up, so very self sufficient in the night, but we still use nightlights throughout our home and do frequent "safety" walk throughs and chats with the kids. We also have an alarm system to help notify us if windows are opened, etc... And because we are located directly below their rooms, we can hear every move they make above. xoxo!

  59. Hi! I wanted to let you know I LOVE your entire blog.. and this jewelry display rocks!! Advice for ladies trying this at home - instead of using corkboard underneath, I just used foamboard. It comes in many colors, (Although I covered mine in fabric) and push pins go in really nicely. It also was cheaper and sturdier than the corkboard I found. (I had a hard time finding thick corkboard, all the corkboard I found was very thin - optimal for lining a drawer, etc. but not perfect for this project!) I LOVE the way mine turned out. You can really do this with any size frame, I used a poster frame and it has more space to hang the GAZILLIONS of necklaces I own. Thanks for posting!!!

  62. I used to use small, cute bowls bought in countries to which we'd traveled. (One in each area where I frequently take earrings, etc. off... one near the door, one near the bed, one in the medicine cabinet, one in my closet.) This system worked great for me for years, but I was looking for something that didn't require me pouring out a bowl of jewelry, looking for matching earrings. I usually wear dangling earrings, so my new system is as follows. I bought clear Mini Command Hooks (purchased in bulk on Amazon) and stuck them in my medicine cabinet door, with each row alternated (like a checkers board), so that the earrings can dangle without disrupting the next row. I then labeled each row ("wood", "silver", "gold", "glass", etc.) to make it even easier to find specific earrings quickly. One medicine cabinet door can hold 50+ pairs of earrings... And I'm used totally un-tapped space! I can access oodles of earrings in an instant & hide them just by shutting the door! I did the same thing on the interior of my coat closet door near our front door for an easy last-minute earring grab... and on the interior of the door of my bedside table for those tired moments when I just don't want to get out of bed. Because the hooks are clear, the look is sleek and uncluttered.

So, I found two old shutters at a thrift store, picked up some discount fabric and upholstery pins, re-purposed some cork, grabbed my glue gun and went to town!

    Here's the finished product:

    Looks pretty decent, no?

Well, all was well until 3 this morning. As I was sleeping, all of a sudden I heard the loudest, most drawn-out, most terrifying crash I've ever heard. The orgnaizer on the right came crashing down in a blaze of glory, poor thing.

So, to say the least, I'm not quite on your level yet, Jen, but I'm going to keep on keepin' on! Thanks for all of your inspirational projects and for your can-do attitude!

    1. Wow! First, let me just say how much I love that you took an idea and ran with it! Your jewelry holders are beautiful and unique, you did a very lovely job with them. I am sorry to hear that they fell, I hope that they are salvageable? How did you hang them? Let me know if you are looking for ideas to ensure they don't take a tumble again. And thank you so much for sharing your story with me! :)
