Playroom Progress: Basket Labeling!

As I shared last week, we finally pulled the trigger on ten baskets for the playroom.  We have been loving their durability and size for storing all of the playroom toys.  I also have been loving that they conceal the toy clutter and tuck nicely out of the way.  However, when it comes to pick-up time, it has been challenging to tell which basket has which toys in them, meaning the kids and I have been playing guessing games.

When it came to labeling these baskets specifically, many of my typical methods wouldn't work since the baskets are textured.  That means no pretty vinyl labels... boo.  I thought about doing some laminated labels, but I wanted something that had a finished look and that would last through many many hours of play.  And remember how I really wanted some espresso natural woven baskets but settled on the plastic green ones for durability reasons?  Well, I got to thinking and decided to try to bring the wood tone in through the labels instead!

So I started out with ten basic 4x6 inch unfinished wood frames.

And some dark walnut wood stain:

I used a foam brush to stain the frames:

And followed the directions on the can to wipe them down with a rag and letting them dry.  I decided to stick with one coat and let some of the lighter tones show through to give it a bit more of a rustic feeling to them.

I have always been a believer in using picture labels in playrooms.  It's the quickest and easiest way to ensure that toys can make it back where they belong, and ensures the kiddos can easily be helpful at pick-up time, no matter what their age.

I just Googled around for the images of the toys that we were storing in each bin, and printed them out on cardstock:

Then, I traced the glass from the frame so that I could easily cut out the image from the cardstock to place inside the frame.

When I placed the printed toy pictures inside of the frames, I didn't use the glass as I want the playroom to be safe.  Glass labels really don't sound like a great idea...

To attach the frames to the basket, we just used some itty bitty screws:

Lined up the frame flush with the open handle:

And screwed through the basket holes right into the back of the wooden frame:

Nice and secure!  Now, no more guessing the contents of each basket!

We repeated the steps for all ten baskets!

The awesomepants part is that when we remove the screws, it's like they were never there since we just used the existing basket holes, and the baskets stay in their original condition!

Still a few more items to finish up before I can call this room update complete:
  • Paint entertainment center
  • Update light fixture
  • Window treatment
  • Additional seating
  • Additional toy storage
  • A fun wall treatment
  • Photographs/Artwork
  • Book storage
  • Basket Labels

What are you favorite, no fail labeling techniques?   Vinyl?  Chalkboard?  Frames?  Stickers?

  4. I adore how these are visual labels! I've not thought to do that with toys before, but it makes sense, especially for young children. Good job!

  5. Yes, this confirms it, you're 100% awesome. Love this idea.

Sad news - I RAN to Target's after your post about the green baskets and they're not on sale at my store! *cry* I'm waiting it out... but I don't know how long I'll hold out. I am afraid they'll go out of stock! What to do... what to do.

Love your playroom. It looks great already and I'm loving being able to follow along this series.

    1. Elisa, I did the same thing. First, I looked them up online and they were sold in sets of 4 for $40.00..Much more than I had planed on. So I drove an hour to our local Target only to find them there for $10.00 each. But I was so in love with them that I had to get some. I snagged two for now but I am having a baby soon and you'd better believe these beauties are going on my registry.

    2. That is so strange? Why some Targets clearanced them and others didn't. Maybe it's based on inventory, location, stock and popularity? Not sure!? Such a bummer!

  6. Once again, you hit a home run. Such a great idea. I use all kinds of stuff for labeling. In my kitchen I use chalk labels so I can easily change the labels on jars. In the toyroom, picture labels work best since my daughter is 3 and can't read. Ps, love the frames and stain color.

  7. Hi Jen, great labels! I love the visual aspect of them and the fact they won't damage your baskets for future use. Your room is looking fantastic, I wish our play room looked half as good, but at least I have made a start on doing a colour coded lego system similar to yours! I love reading your blog, however, while I am still thinking about doing stuff at home, you have already got on and done it! How do you do that with your busy life? I'd love to know how you find the time, we too have 3 boys so I know how hectic it is. Have you always been a naturally organised person? Is it in the genes?! Thanks for sharing all you do, it really is inspiring - it gives me ideas and the motivation I need.

    1. Awww, thanks friend!

I do a lot of projecting for the blog now, I never used to move at the speed I do now, but blogging keeps me motivated. I also have a few afternoons each week where all my kids are in school and I am home, so that helps. My husband is a super duper trooper when it comes to helping me as well, and it's typically how we spend our time together after the kids go to bed. I don't watch a lot of tv, I just love to craft and project and blog.

Surprisingly, I don't think I am "naturally" organized. I do work hard at it. I just like to problem solve and enjoy clean, clutter free spaces. :)

  39. Can I ask what size of baskets you used? The link you used in your basket post sent me to the XL square baskets but the dimensions on the website say they are 14 inches and in your post you said the expedit opening was 13". Just wondering how they fit. Maybe you bought the Large instead of the XL?
I love this playroom and have decided to pretty much copy you (but change the colors up a tad).

  40. Jen, Wow. I think one of the best, if not THE BEST part of this project (and any of your others) is that you are giving your young kids tools to be orderly with their things, their thoughts, their lives. Young brains will begin to habitually tune out when there is constant chaos or the mental paralysis that comes from not knowing where to start. These early clean-up habits make a world of difference to kids, not only while they are living at home, but as they begin their own lives away from home. I always cleaned up for my now 8 year old son. Always. Bless his heart, he craves neatness, and I am just now trying to give him wings to be autonomous in this way. I guess better late than never! Bravo to you, and thank you!

    1. Thanks Anita! I do what I can to give them the tools to be organized and helpful at a young age. It makes it easier on all of us and I hope it will create good long term habits. :)

  42. I am getting ready to redo my dinning room area just off my kitchen. I am an amateur carpenter and built a window seat at my last house. It turned out O.K. but so much work and good lumber is not cheap. So I am considering these shelves. Even though I live to far away to shop at an Ikea store, I did find them on ebay. Shipping is a little cheaper but still very pricey I can justify spending that much on shipping though since the units are only $79. I wish I could use your colors and pattern ideas, but then I would have to redo the whole house to go with it!! (Which I have done before!)
    Thanks for your great ideas!!!

  44. Wow Jen, those look fantastic. Very creative! So I'm wondering what you do or have done (when your boys were smaller) to store your bigger types of toys. We have several Imaginext toys (like the space station) that are too large to fit in the cubbies of our Expedit shelf so they just sit on top. But they are kind of an eyesore. Any clever suggestions for how to store those that I don't have to look at them all the time?

    1. Hi Deb!

Right now, we keep our larger toys in the bottom cabinets of the entertainment center, as seen here: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-m4DSUGXC18I/T3SRZo4l5_I/AAAAAAAASYw/e99RKdxuMRA/s1600/PaintingFurniture19.jpg

Large toys seem to be the biggest challenge to store. I like to look for deep cabinets or armoires, oversized decorative baskets or stash them away in nearby closets.

  74. Gee, after reading everyone's comments, I feel like the only person who isn't crazy about the frames idea. The frames turned out great; I love how rustic they are in comparison to the modern seating and wall treatment, but I feel as though it changes the focal point of the room and seems a tad busy/bulky. I'm holding out until the end, however. Looking forward to seeing how your artwork will pull everything together in the finale. :)

    1. To be honest, I agree with you that the photo doesn't do the frames justice in the space. However, they were a necessary step to be sure the kids can take ownership of pick up time. Hopefully I can pull the whole room off in the end and redirect the focal point. :)

(www.NACKit.com) They are self-adhesive pockets that I first used on storage tubs but now also use on fabric bins and other types of containers for toys. They come with cards that you can design the same way (with googled images or handwriting) I like that I can take them on & off & change the cards too

  81. Those frames turned out great! I want to label my son's toy bins in his playroom, too, but they're solid canvas so the screw idea wouldn't work. I think I'll try to attach laminated index cards to the front of them somehow. And I love the idea of labeling them with pictures instead of words! My son is almost 2 years old so it makes sense to have pictures instead of words since he can't read yet.

I'd love advice on how best to attach labels to canvas bins. I'm not the craftiest momma so I need all the help I can get. :)

  83. I am in LOVE with these box labels!!! They are so easy to make and so lovely! Great job! I love that you're focusing on one room and taking us through the steps. Keeps me in suspense for what's next! Love your blog!

  84. Hi Jen,
I am another fan of your blog and everything you do. I actually tried ordering 3 sets of those unfinished wooden frames from the link you provided but it was asking for $92 shipping to Australia.

  85. I stumbled upon your blog via Pinterest. I love all your ideas! You inspired me to clean up our play area. I have blogged about it and you can see it here. http://www.bubblesandbobbins.com/2012/05/playroom-storage.html

  86. I love how you've labelled the baskets with pictures! The room is fabulous. I wanted to pin it but your site has been blocked as someone has reported that it links to spam or inappropriate content. A bunch of blogs are int he same situation, I wasn't sure if you knew it was happening to yours.

    1. It was in our lower level when we first finished the space, and then we had a flood and had to remove all of the furnishings, flooring and trim and start from scratch. So, we moved it to another area in the lower level and began rebuilding it with a new look! :)

  88. DROOL! LOVE!!! I have two questions:
    1. Do you have the printables for your labels? Our kids have a lot of the same toys. I'd love to not reinvent the wheel if I do go with these types of baskets.
    2. I have a LOAD of these storage containers from Target:

Can you think of a way to label them? I seriously might just get the ones you have b/c I love this idea so much...

    1. Hi Jennifer!

I didn't save the files, I just pasted a Google image into a Word document and hit print.

You could create labels and string them through the handle or add a pouch to the front? :)

      xoxo,
      Jen

    2. Maybe...but yours are so cute, I'm going to have to keep thinking. :)

  89. I ordered the frames from the link above. They just came. Did you take the little stand thing off of the back of them before you mounted on the baskets? (I'm talking about that piece that lets you use the frame as a tabletop frame.) Or did you leave it? If you removed it, how much did you remove and how did you remove?
    DISCLAIMER: I'm so visual; I need a step-by-step on everything. :)

  90. Hi Jennifer!

I just pried the entire stand off with a flat head screwdriver {very carefully of course!}. They came off pretty cleanly. I don't think they would mount flush to the baskets should you decide to leave them on.

    Thanks so much!

    xoxo,
    Jen

  91. I have not seen anything as pretty and functional as your bin labels. One suggestion I would make (I haven't read through all the comments, so I may be repeating)would be to add the words also to the pictures. This would be a very good learning tool for the children. I'm a retired school teacher of Kindergarten - Primary grades(29 years) so any way I can encourage reading I jump on it. Love your blogs.

  92. Hi Jen,

I am new to the labeling/ make-your-own-vinyl-stuff world. Do you have a recommendation for products or machines I would use to do that?

    Thank you!

  94. I just ordered some fabric bins for my expedit shelf. What would be some of the best options for a kid friendly label?

  95. This is brilliant! I have been trying to find a label situation for my girls play room for a while now and this is IT!!! thank you!

  96. Is it easy to change out the pictures when needed? I rotate my son's toys every so often, and the best thing would be if I could change the pictures.

  97. Hi Jen! Can you please post the link for the wooden frames? I looked through the post but I could not find it above! :)

    1. Hi Keena!

I found them here: http://factorydirectcraft.com/catalog/products/1602_1965-26289-unfinished_wood_photo_frame_kits_set_of_6.html However, it appears that they have since been discontinued.

I am guessing most craft stores such as Michael's and JoAnn sell unfinished wood frames as well.

      xo!

  98. Hi guys & gals! Just a quick note, while you're waiting to those gorgeous bins to go on sale (and YES, they are great), hustle on over to your local dollar store. The bins there are totally workable for temporary use. I'm using them for my studio space. They are not nearly as nice as the bins, but I made laminated labels from scrapbooking software and attached the labels with ribbons. It's not as super as your bins, but till that day comes when I can find the bins on sale, I'm getting organized and am neater. Less work, changable, and still attractive.

  99. Do you think screwing the frames on through fabric bins would work as well?

    1. I do! Just as long as you add a protective nut/cap to the inside of the bin, I definitely think it would work. :)
