Bathroom Makeover Week! The REVEAL!

Oh my goodness I am so excited, I can barely stand it.  This will go down as one of my favorite reveals yet.  The suspense was even killing ME!  Day after day over this past week, we have put in every spare second of our time, our blood, sweat and tears into this bathroom makeover.

Let's take a minute to look back at what we started with.

Dated everything.  Blah white vanity cabinet, old formica counter, a toilet that wasn't functioning, discolored flooring and a medicine cabinet without a purpose and eighties lighting.  It really was a deep dark unhappy place tucked away within a nook of our home, and was not at all a reflection of us or our personality.

Hosting company put us into gear to hurry and give this room some love, and I couldn't be happier that we finally took on a project that has been on our "To Do" list for some time.

Day one I stayed up nice and late and slapped a few coats of paint on the walls {Behr's Quietude}.

Day two I primed and painted the cabinets {Martha Stewart Wrought Iron} and removed the trim to prepare for the flooring.

Day three I went on the hunt for a new mirror, lined the cabinets with pretty paper and the hubs started laying our new floors.

Day four the sconces were installed, the mirror was given a little love and I came up with some cute storage for the Q-Tips.

Over the weekend we wrapped up the installation items, such as the floor, the trim, the toilet, the sink and faucet and all of the hardware and shelving.  It was a VERY productive weekend!

So all of that build up and anticipation, all for the FINAL REVEAL!  We did it.  I am not sure how, I didn't think we would, but we did.  We got everything done the day of our company arriving.  I finished styling and shooting the photos only an hour prior.  That is some soap opera drama right there.

You have read all of the details for the past week, so I am going to let the photos do all of the talking today.

Let me just hop into the shower quick and give you my favorite view right away...

The wall received the pretty knobs turned hooks.  They now hold a hand towel and bathroom accessories.

The white counter cleaned up the entire space.  It now feels timeless, and allows all of the accessories to really pop.

The inside of the vanity received a little love as well.  The shelf liner was the perfect backdrop to the fluffy white towels, scrubbers, cleaning supplies and paper products.

Above the loo, we DIY'd and stained a wooden shelf, which now holds a mason jar of flowers and some wash rags.

The frame was a Goodwill find, and I added brass L-brackets from the hardware store to give it a little extra somethin' somethin'.

The art was a saying that I have been crushing at for quite a long time, that Emily Ley sure is a smart cookie.

Below the shelf was another Goodwill find.  A simple white dish holds yummy smelling soaps.

The hooks act as the perfect resting place for more towels.

Let's crawl back into the shower.  You can snag a sweet look at how the shower curtain plays nicely with all of the other colors and accessories in the space.

And how about we give some love to the new floors.  Completely waterproof, yet they look oh so warm, rustic and chic.

The cabinet to the right of the curtain holds a few extra goodies.  Extra toiletries and the new oh-so-sweet tip jar.

And that rounds out the week long bathroom drama with the happiest ever after!

Did I want to cry at times?  Absolutely.  Was I let down multiple times?  Yep.  Did I wonder time and time again if our marriage would survive or if we would finish in time?  Yes and yes.  Was it worth every last ounce of time?  No doubt.

I am excited to see what we can pull off within a week's worth of time, however, I now feel like I need a renovation vacation, so I am not sure we will be as ambitious with future projects.  But man does it feel incredible to walk into that bathroom.

I have a silly question regarding the mirror. Is it ok to use any mirror in the bathroom without having to worry about it lasting in there with all the steam and moisture? I found so many beautiful mirrors in homegoods but I wasn't sure if I could use in our master bathroom...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That is a great question. My guess would be that most mirrors are OK. Certain finishes may be a little less ideal given the moisture, so it might just come down to a judgement call or a quick search on Google.

  55. It looks great. Is that cabinet formica or wood? We have white formica in our bathrooms and hate it. I don't know if you can paint formica or not. Any suggestion?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmmm... To be honest, I don't know what you would technically call it. It was a wood with a glossy finish, sort of like a melamine. I think you would be OK if you used a good primer first as we did. We also used a really good paint. It turned out SO great, I love it like crazy. Maybe take a door or drawer in to your local paint shop and talk to a specialist for the best solution.

It was surprisingly easy {from what the hubby said}. It seems as though our vanity is a standard size so Home Depot had one that already fit it perfectly, however, many home improvement stores can custom order if they don't stock your particular size.

Thank you so much! I try and select colors that are gender neutral for the most part, and then maybe add my small girly touches through an accessory here and there. My guys seem to like it all OK, although, I think they are more concerned with playing than the colors on our walls. :)

  88. This is - by far - one of my most favourite washroom makeovers ever!!! You have such a good eye, and everything in there is so glam and fresh and special! That's the best part - it's so special! I want to be a guest int his bathroom!

  89. You totally Rocked it out of the park Jen! I am loving everything and you have so inspired me to get my butt in gear to update our guest bath. Thanks for the fabulous inspiration!

  90. I did not think your old bathroom looked wrong: before reading I thought it was a picture AFTER renovating one!

Anyways, even that said, I do think your new bathroom looks adorable! You did a very pretty job. Congratz!!

  91. Jen! Totally lovely in every way. Love the dark blue with pops of pink and gold. So luxe and so you. Way to ROCK a week!

  92. Love the bathroom!

Can I ask what you did to the mason jar to make it gold? Is it paint? Gold leaf?

    1. Thank you! The jar was purchased blue and I just taped it off with painters tape and gave it a quick coat of gold spray paint {Rustoleum's Gold Metalic}. Love it too! I had to make a couple of them to sprinkle around the abode.

  93. This is beautiful! And, a real inspiration as I've been trying to figure out what to do in our en suite (we just moved in). My question...did you paint over laminate cupboards? And, if so, was there any special prep required?

    1. Hi Jenn!

We did paint the laminate cabinet, you can snag the details her: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2013/08/bathroom-makeover-week-day-two.html

I just primed them and then did two coats of a high quality glossy exterior paint. I love the results!

  94. Fantastic job!

I do have to say though, that I still kind of want the vintage-y looking towel rack that you had before too!

I'll certainly be pinning this one though! Good work!

    1. Thank you! Loved the shelf as well, however, it was really visually heavy, especially once loaded with towels and accessories and just wasn't right for the space any longer. If you are near the twin cities area, it is being donated to the ReStore. ;)

  95. Jen, what a beautiful transformation!! Fresh and classic and feminine-but-not-too-girly all at once!! We're showing our small powder room a little love and I very literally "now way-ed" and "oh wow-ed" when I saw that we've used very similar items, ha ha. Have a fab weekend! =)

  96. It looks even more fabulous than I had imagined it would!!!!
Love the navy cabinets and your shower curtain!!!
Also love that you used hooks instead of the traditional towel rack.

  100. I love your makeover, and I am happily reassured by one detail: I noticed that your sconces are brushed nickel, while your faucet is polished chrome. I just did the same thing in my powder room makeover, and was stressing about whether or not it was the 'right' thing to do. You showed me that it doesn't have to be all matchy-matchy to be beautiful. Thank you SO MUCH for that! Enjoy your beautiful bathroom.

  103. Jen, I'm dying! It is TOO gorgeous! The gold touches on the frame with the pinks and reds are my favorite. I can't believe you did this all in a week. Stunning!

  104. That is sooooo great! Classic, warm, inviting. If you can't find your house guests they might be hanging in the bathroom!

  106. SO glad I saw this! I have been trying to convince hubs that the Allure floor will be perfect for the bathroom!

How did you tackle the edge of the flooring that buts against the tub?

Thanks for the great pics of how your hubs did the cuts and all, so helpful.

  109. I am curious how you feel about the lights in this bathroom now that you have had them for awhile. I am trying to decide what lighting to put in a small bathroom with no windows, and hate it when I'm in someone else's bathroom and can't see a thing when I'm doing my makeup!

    1. Hi Kimberly!

We are loving the amount of light. It seems perfect for the space. We ended up using two 60 watt bulbs so it seems nice and bright.

  111. I wanted to ask you abou the mason jar did you dip the bottom of it in paint? And where did you get the tip jar? Wonderful bathroom reveal, great job!

    1. Hi Carol!

For the mason jar, I taped it off and spray painted the bottom with gold spray paint. The tip jar was made from a recycled jar. :)

  112. Just curious how your floors are holding up a year later? For every good review on the Allure products, I have seen a bad one. We are considering these floors for an upcoming remodeling project and would love your thoughts.

    1. We still personally love the floors. We have had them throughout our entire lower level for a few years now and they have held up really well and we truly appreciate their durability and moisture resistance. I always recommend to use furniture pads on anything that will be moving around on the tops of the floors {really heavy movement may scuff them, but daily use by the dogs does not} We did have a spot where the floor separated a smidge in our lower level {our fault when we installed}, and a little caulk fixed it right up. That is about it, otherwise, I would rave about the floors all day long. :) Best of luck with your reno!

  113. Adorable accessories! I heart the art work. Where did the smaller floral print come from?

    1. Thank you! The smaller print is a photo I took of a flower that I printed at home.
