170 Secret Stairs: No Longer a Secret!

Forgive me in advance.  This is one of those super long, photo intensive posts.  And I mean giant.  I decided that I could either drag things out into four more posts or just get one good one out there, so here it is!

Our stairs are so close to completion!  And I am excited that I no longer have to hide their unfinished hideousness!  Wait.  I don't think my excitement came across well enough.  I AM OVER THE MOON IN LOOOOOOVE WITH OUR STAIRS!  I can't stress enough that the stair project is one of my favorite projects that we have done to date on our home.  They are the first thing you see when you enter our house, so having them finished {minus a hand rail}, is such a relief.

As a reminder, here is where we started:

And here is where we left off, new pretty white paneling!

The next step in the process was to finally add some treads and risers!  Eeek!  My favorite part!

But it definitely didn't happen over night!  So much was involved!

Since our original stairs were just construction stairs with carpet over the top, we decided that if we wanted the oooh la la pretty stairs, we would have to put in new risers and treads.  Considering our DIY skill level, that meant picking up stair kits from Home Depot {vs. trying to create our own}.

They came in an unfinished oak, which meant that we would be responsible for finishing them ourselves.

While searching for the kits, we also realized that we purchased our lower level flooring from Home Depot as well, and went over to the flooring department to grab a sample for color comparison purposes.

Once we had the stain and supplies purchased...

We went to a family member's workshop to lay out all of the treads and risers on saw horses.

We put three coats of white glossy paint on the riser panels with a foam roller...

And three coats of Minwax Walnut stain on the treads, applied with foam brushes...

Once the stairs were to a shade that we liked {we had our sample floor piece placed near the stairs until we achieved the desired wood tone}, they received four coats of Minwax Polyurethane {we applied the stain and poly per the directions on the cans}.

The stairs and treads sat for a few days to cure prior to the day of installation!

Speaking of the day of installation!  It was a doozy!  But we did it in just one day!

The treads were too long for the width of the staircase, so they had to be cut down to size.  Our walls were not perfectly even, so each stair tread cut was custom to the wall {which is why we didn't cut them down to size prior to staining and polying}.

To cut the finished treads, we started out by measuring our cut line and marking it with the green tape....

Next, we measured a second time to draw a straight cut line onto the green tape...

And also added a second piece of painters tape to protect our tread from the circular saw that would be cutting off the excess tread.

Not only did the painters tape protect the top of the tread from the saw, it also reduced splintering and cracking of the finish.

When measuring, we accounted for the fact that we would have to do some minor sanding to custom fit each board and to give the edge a nice and smooth finish.

The risers were cut down in the same fashion.

To install the treads and risers, we used a construction grade adhesive, along with a brad nailer.

And once each step was placed, my Mr. used his weight to set it.

Looking pretty sharp!

We followed this process all the way to the tippy top!

Things were looking pretty spiffy at this point!  And after caulking all of the nail holes and giving the risers a final coat of white paint to clean it all up, I was ready to call it good!

But I couldn't.  The upper half of the walls were just not working for me.  They were painted in Behr's Navajo White about 6-7 years ago when we painted our kitchen cabinets.  It was color matched to some tile and although it was a great face lift from the original dated oak cabinets back in the day, I have been feeling like it doesn't reflect our more current and colorful style.  The color reads very yellow beige and I have been slowly working gray undertones throughout our home.  So looking up and down the stairs at the yellowy walls didn't do all of the hard work we had just done any justice.

Knowing that within the next year, the entire kitchen and living room will hopefully be renovated and opened up into one large space, I have been searching for the perfect paint color to use to unify our entire main level.

I was going for something neutral.  Something light.  Something with a hint of gray but not gray.  And I even reached out for help from you all via instagram....

I had a few of the suggestions mixed and painted onto the wall and found that I was still coming up short.  Everything was too light, too dark, too white, too blue... and then one day I spotted it.  Glidden's Smooth Stone won the gold medal!

Although it isn't the perfect mix with the existing green in the living room, it will be the perfect color for our living room/kitchen/dining combo space down the line, so onto the walls it went!  And it works great with the color at the bottom of the stairs, making it feel intentional and seamless!

At the top of the stairs we added a couple of hooks behind the door {since we have no entry closet}, which are intended to be a place for our guests to keep their coats and bags while they visit.

I found them at World Market and they are simply spectacular!

Ready to see how the stairs turned out after all of the staining, polying, painting, installing, caulking, painting and even more painting?

Hello lovely stairs!

We LOVE them.  Oh yeah, I said that.  But we do!  Such a fantastic difference from what we lived with for the last two years!

We still have to add a railing of sorts.  We are still researching options and styles but I will be sure to let you know as soon as we come up with something awesome.  Until then, let's just be in awe of the beautiful transformation of our secret stairs!

Totally worth the wait!

Oh, and I am so taking suggestions on keeping these babies clean.  The top step is already dusty again by the time I get to the bottom!  Although I am exaggerating, it is feeling like a daily task keeping them nice and purdy so if you have any quick and easy stair cleaning tips, I would love ya forever!

Update!  Our railing has been installed!  You can check out that post here.

14 IHeart Handmade Walls!

My name is Jen and I am addicted to color.

Color makes me smile and since I spend so much time within the walls of my home, I try to incorporate cheerful colors in any way that I can.  Throw pillows, rugs, accessories and through painted furniture and walls, the colors in our home make it feel like spring and summer year round!

However, I struggle a bit when it comes to adding art on our walls.  Which is probably one of the most important and key ways to liven up your home and make it feel all warm and fuzzy... but I get nervous.  Nervous to pull the trigger on a huge art investment.  Nervous that what I pick won't make sense or jive with the rest of our home.  Nervous that I will change my mind five minutes after I put something up.... so, I chicken out, toss a few pics of the kids on the wall, use mirrors as space fillers and call it good.

But it isn't good.

My home is asking for more.  More life.  More character.  More color.

That is where my new favorite read comes in.

The authors behind one of my absolute favorite blogs, the Handmade Home, have created the happiest, most colorful and creative eBook I have seen.  It gave me joyful goosebumps and is where I plan on gaining oodles of inspiration to give more life to the walls in our home.

It is quite fitting really.  I mean, look at their home!  Isn't it incredible?

Not to mention, they were the inspiration behind our first major art DIY project that I still hug daily, and have The Handmade Home to thank!

Sometimes I look at their projects and think there is absolutely no way I could create something as beautiful.  I am no artist.  I would totally screw it up.  But their book gave me the confidence I needed to realize that art is imperfect and I totally can do it!

I downloaded the book on my iPad and it lit up the screen with joy.  Seriously, this book is so darn colorful, whimsical and eye catching, I couldn't stop turning page after page!

I really love that they make it easy for DIYer's to understand how much they can tackle.  Meaning, they have a great guide that estimates skill level, time and moolah needed for each project.

They also cover different types of love for your walls.  Frames, artwork, mirrors and clocks, this book has it all!  They even chat about different painting techniques and share their favorite beautiful colors!

I love that everything has a sense of life, of dimension and can be given a personal and unique twist.  The book filled me with so many new ideas, I can't wait to whip something up for our entry, the playroom, Preston's room and our master bedroom! That's right, I now have newly inspired ideas for spaces all over our home!

I wish I could give the folks over at The Handmade Home a big sloppy kiss for being so awesome and putting so many wonderful ideas in one place!  For now, virtual hugs and smooches will have to do.  The walls of my home will benefit from their creativeness and ability to create masterpieces with paint and wood, and for that, I am eternally grateful!

Are you looking to bring more smiles, warmth and interest to the walls in your home?   You can find The Handmade Walls eBook here and be well on your way to jazzing up your happy home as well!

29 UHeart Organizing: Time to Wrap!

Someone pinch me.  Please.  I am having such a hard time believing it is time to start planning and preparing for the holiday season!

I will admit, I am one that easily gets taken by surprise at how quickly the season comes each year, and by the time I typically get into the holiday swing of things, they are already over!  However, I have vowed that I will NOT procrastinate this year.  Tree will go up earlier, gifts will be purchased earlier, cards will be done earlier... and that means I must get my rear in gear!

Courtney is giving me the kick start I need today, I just went to holiday heaven by reading her post.  Hopefully you will find yourself getting excited to kick off the most wonderful time of the year as well!  Here she is now!

With the holidays peeking out from behind the corner, I am trying to get as organized as possible. I have started collecting items for our advent calendar countdown as well as getting this wrapping box organized for little Christmas gifts. This box is designed to help me quickly put together teacher gifts, neighbor goodies, hostess gifts and any other need for an unexpected gift here and there. The idea behind it is to have everything in one place so that when I go to give out those yearly gifts {teachers, friends, hostess, etc.} I don’t have to scramble for wrapping.

The box itself is a white box from The Container Store but you could use absolutely anything. And it’s only for a couple of months so feel free to shop your home and “borrow” a basket of box for the season.

So what is in the box? Here is the breakdown: Bakers String, Crinkle Paper, Tote Bags, Gift Tags, Scissors, a Pen, and small shatter proof ornaments.

The small ornaments are from both Hobby Lobby and Ikea. They have amazing prices on these little guys and you can easily grab them with a coupon. The package of small white totes is also from Hobby Lobby and only costs $5 for 12. With a 40% off coupon it’s only around $3.00 and there will be enough for me to cover all the little gifts that I give out.

The gift tags were only $2.00 for a set of 15 from Hobby Lobby. They come as blank cards so that you can do whatever you want with them. I always think a cute gift tag can really make a simple gift look very special.

So with everything I need in just one place, I can easily wrap a gift card or simple gift in a jiffy. Does anyone say “jiffy” anymore?? Each tote bag will be filled with crinkle paper and tied with an ornament and gift tag. I also keep a pen tucked in the box so I can fill out the card as well.

When I shop this year, I will keep in mind the size of my tote bags. When I give out little gifts to teachers, neighbors, friends or a hostess these are some of the gifts I often give:
  • Starbuck’s Gift Cards
  • A Set of Coasters
  • A Pretty Bracelet
  • Personalized Stationary
  • A Small Decorative Bowl

By the way, this bakers string was a steal from Target. They had it in the dollar section and each one comes with ten yards. I only use about 10” per gift so this will be more than enough for the holiday season. Be on the look out if you want to scoop some up.

So that is my wrapping box for those little last minute gifts. Keep in mind this is to wrap teachers’ gifts as well as hostess gifts. The gifts to family are normally wrapped in boxes with some fun additions. You can see how I wrapped all of those last year. I am sort of a sucker for a beautifully wrapped gift. Who isn’t, right?!

Here’s to an organized holiday season! I am excited to implement this box this year and see if I can stay on top of all of the little gifts that seem to pop up out of the blue. What about you? Do you have a fun idea for keeping your holiday gift wrapping close at hand?
