44 Magical Fridge Update

So it's Monday morning and you are SO excited to get back to all of your blog reading, now that your wild and crazy weekend is over.

And you show up here, and I hit you with this...

Many of you may say... "Lame" {probably in the same tone I hear from my 9 year old}

But a few of you will say, "Thank you!"

Because I know some of you out there are just like me.  And you get crazy weird giddy over the smallest of things.  Because it's the little things that sometimes can just make our day!

I really contemplated even pushing out this post, because it's so odd, but each and every time I clean the handle on my fridge door, I am in awe of the difference.  So I am taking a risk here...

By now I am sure many of you have heard of the "Magic Eraser".  Never use them on your walls.  Just sayin'.  Been there, cried there...  But I do find myself using this magical sponge whenever the kiddos snag hold of writing materials and scribble them on items other than paper.  Or when there are scuffs on the floor.  But typically, they aren't in my daily cleaning routine since I am a jumbo fan of the microfiber sponges.

But where the Magic Eraser really comes into play {I usually just snag the cheapo Target brand, they work just as good}, is on the kitchen fridge door handle.  Any mama knows how dirty that fridge door handle can get, and quick!  Lots and lots of fingers and feet hanging on to that handle... yes, I said feet.

And the only thing I have found to get my fridge handle gleaming white is this magical eraser.

Take a peek at my fridge handle before:

It's embarrassing to admit, sure, but I do it for the sake of the blog.  How about a view from the side?

The funny thing is from a distance, it doesn't really look that bad.  But when you get all up close and personal with your fridge, it can be kinda scary.

I have found nothing gets that dirty, icky stuff off of the handle better than the Magic Eraser.  Just getting it a little wet with water, is all I do to go from ish, to a smile in about thirty seconds.

Here is a halfway there shot, compare the top handle to the bottom one....

And a couple more seconds later....

SO MUCH BETTER!  Oh happy day!

Side by side comparison?

Weirdly impressive right?

Am I the only nut that gets excited about stuff like this?  What itty bitty changes have you been making, that feel really mighty in the end?  Anyone going to take 60 seconds out of your day to scrub up the fridge handle?  Of course, you don't have to stop there either, it has the oh so magical same effect on other appliance handles as well!

P.S.  Not being paid to boast about this product.  I just get really excited when things sparkle.  Oh, and wondering how I organize the inside of my fridge?  Check out this post here!

  1. I may take 20 minutes to go buy a magic eraser. I'm always grossed out by my fridge door handles and can never get them CLEAN. THANK YOU!

  2. I love your blog and love all your little tips to help keep your home beautiful. I am one of THOSE people that really do get excited about these little things. I also love to take an old toothbrush and clean out the rubber seal thingy on the fridge door. I feel like a house is REALLY clean and stays clean when things like this are done, and like you said it only takes a few seconds.

  3. haha that IS weirdly impressive! Thanks for the tip! I might have to pick one of those guys up! I've shunned them ever since my property management days... I had to scrub tenants walls with those things til I'm certain part of the walls actually fell apart -- ughhhh! But maybe they've redeemed their little eraser selves for now! haha

I'm going to do a post sometime this week about a cleaning set I got at ROSS of all places, i think you'll love the simplicity of how a small change can making a huge difference =) just a hunch!

  4. We have a white back door that gets gross from doggie paw prints and dirty husbands coming in from the garage. Magic Eraser is the only thing that works!

  5. I love the Magic Eraser too, but have never heard to not use it on the walls. It may be a weird question, but what does it do to them? Just curious! ;-)

  6. Hi Kim!

It took our paint off the walls really quickly, down to the drywall... I am sure they can be used on walls if done really carefully. I just had a bad experience because I didn't fully realize their strength!

    Jen

  7. Are you kidding me? This is awesome! I have the same issue with the fridge door handles and the oven handle too...I have cleaned it with all sorts of things over the years. I used to have some magic erasers but didn't think to use them on the handles...duh! I'm going to buy some more this week and have a go!

  8. Guess what? I just used Magic Eraser on my fridge and kitchen cabinets! Hmm, I'll have to check Target's version because these erasers are pretty expensive! Thanks for the tip.

  9. I love my Magic Erasers! They are seriously THE ONLY thing that will remove metal 'scratches' (you know, the ones left by keys and other metallic items) from our white walls. Nothing else works! Somehow, Magic Erasers really ARE magical. I like your clean fridge handles.

  10. Great tip! You are most certainly NOT the only one!!

  11. I haven't tried a Magic Eraser on the fridge handle, but a combination of baking soda and a little bit of water will do the trick too (plus it's cheap and environmentally friendly)!

  12. It's so funny you posted about fridge handles because I finally "discovered" the magic erasers would work on them this summer. I've been using magic erasers for so long and I can't believe I hadn't thought of using them on the fridge handles.

They are excellent on removing scum from tubs too. Also plastic shower pan floors (almost seems like the same material of fridge handles) that ring that builds up....magic erasers seem to be the only thing that works!

  13. I do love me some magic erasers! I've also found that the dollar tree version works just as well even if they don't last quite as long. Two of them for a buck and I can do my entire kitchen with one. They're also really great at cleaning stovetops. Mine is black and I used to not be able to keep it clean, but they remove all the ick and make it sparkle without streaks.

Another tip for you, coffee filters are amazing when cleaning windows. No lint and no streaks!

Thanks for sharing, I'm a fridge handle maniac too, clean them almost every day because I realized right after I got married and waited a year to clean ours that they were EW EW EW! Now I'm spastic about it!

  14. I use those magic sponges on almost everything. Wall, trim, sneakers, patio furniture, the tub, tile. They are amazing.

  15. I had to laugh because I'm always so giddy when those trouble spots are finally clean, even if only for a few moments. You are so brave to show the before, but let me tell you, ours looks about the same. It's times like that I wish I had a black fridge! Thanks so much for sharing your love for the Magic Eraser, they are awesome!

  16. Thanks for sharing this! I've been kind of a nut about my fridge too. When I moved in my house I had to take the handle off completely to be cleaned. LOVE magic erasers!

  17. Um, you're not the only one! :) That is amazing, thanks for the tip. I use those to help clean my tub, but this is also a great idea!

  18. I love magic erasers. I also am amazed at how well they work on the fridge door! They're also great for soap scum in the tub.

  19. Totally not lame, thanks for the great tip! I've never been able to get my refrigerator doors clean, so I will definitely be trying this.

  20. I LOVE the Magic Eraser! I use it on everything, too. It really works great on showers and bath tubs! The handles on my refrigerator are black but I imagine they are equally as dirty so tonight when I get home from work guess what I'll be doing?

  21. Thanks!! Great tip! I just LOOOOVE your blog!!! XO, Pinky

  22. I love my Magic Eraser! I save glass jars (lots & lots of glass jars...) and the Magic Eraser is ESSENTIAL for removing the ink-stamped expiration date from them or their lids!

  23. Try the magic erraser on the arm rest in your car. Works great. Joan in Mo.

  24. Ok, about halfway through this post I was thinking maybe you were a little over the edge, but when I got to the first "after" shot and the side by sides, I was definitely weirdly impressed! Now I'm off to clean the handle on our fridge . . .

  25. Funny, my entire fridge door looks like the before. Perhaps I should go buy two erasers?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Wow, I love that! I am going to go try that right now!

  27. If you're weird then I am too! Love this kind of stuff and this is why I love your blog. Those little erasers are AH-mazing! And I can relate to using them on walls...bad idea. Thanks for sharing!

  30. I know the satisfaction you mention b/c I did the thing to my fridge handle. But I did it with just my extra special Norwex dish rag and water! Check out my post all about it: http://simplynorwex.wordpress.com/2010/09/28/dirty-paws/

  31. I tried this as soon as I read your blog, and it really worked. Thank you for all of your great ideas.

  32. I love my Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. I have fibromyalgia and don't have a lot of strength so I'm not able to clean for long period of time or able to put the same ommphh into cleaning. I found the magic eraser and it got me motivated to clean all my kitchen appliances and my washer and dryer. Now I don't get as exited to do everything at once but I'm always impressed when I use them.

  33. I'm going to try this on my steering wheel. It's gray but I know it gets disgusting from past cleaning with Armor All. I bet this does a much better job.

  34. Thank you! I read this post last week and then I went to Target today to buy a 4 pack! I had to do my whole house! Love it!

  35. I am so inspired! im going to buy a magic eraser today.. I hate how grimy my fridge handles look!

  36. Hi Jen, I'm a big fan of the Magic Eraser too. I just stumbled upon this cleaner recipe and have not needed the eraser since. The only downfall is it can get quite soapy so rinsing is required. The upside is that is is squeaky clean afterward and so very cheap. Here is a link to the recipe. You might have already seen it on Pinterest. http://www.food.com/recipe/tub-and-shower-magic-434275

  37. This is one of the reasons I was leery about going from a black fridge to a white fridge....the black fridge is a light sucker in my kitchen, so I was thinking white because it wouldn't contrast as much with the way I want to do my cabinets.

  38. A few years ago I spent what seemed like an entire day trying to clean the plastic straps on my patio chairs. I literally tried every cleaning products under the sink - they still were covered with mildew and I was ready to give up UNTIL I decided to try my MAGIC ERASERS. It cleaned the straps so fast I was mad at all the time I had wasted. They are truly magic. If all else fails you can rely on Mr. Clean!

  41. Magic Erasers are a staple in my house! Santa even puts them in my stocking :) Just used one to take a nasty mark off my daughter's American Girl doll. I also break off a piece of one daily to keep my white porcelain sink shiny clean! I honestly don't know what I would do without them!

  42. For most cleaning, I swear by baking soda + lemon juice/vinegar. I love the result! Best part? No harsh chemicals, and it costs next to nothing.
