152 My Daily Blog Planner

Funny little confession for ya to start out this Monday, "I write an organizing blog and my blog isn't all that organized."

It's true.  And it makes me all crazy inside.

So I finally decided to do something about it!  It is my job after all!

I have all these big kid plans of fixing up my site, updating my project gallery, keeping an editorial calendar, expanding my shop and eventually growing a business.... the problem is, that there are so many branches to what I do each day, that it can be overwhelming to keep it all straight.

So, I find myself coming up with all sorts of ideas.  Great light bulb moment ideas.  And grabbing my closest notebook to jot them down. Then the next day, I may grab a post it.  And another day I may make a note on my iPhone.  Then, before you know it, I don't have a clue where any of those ideas I had are... and then writers block sets in, and then I don't post for three days...  boo.

And it is true, I will admit.  I have had lists and lists of post ideas and then it comes time to post and I can't come up with a thing... any other bloggers out there been in that situation?  It's not a fun feeling.

I decided that in order for me to be a better blogger, I needed to solve my little problem, and pronto!

So, I did what I love to do.  I created some organizing bloggy printables:

The printables were a place where I could keep track of all those different areas of my blog life.  A place to jot down ideas for future shop items, a place to keep track of all the home projects we want to tackle and share, and place to keep note of website enhancements that need to take place and ways I want to expand my branding and client services.  One happy place for all of my super exciting ideas.  I could finally hold myself accountable!

I printed out the lovely colorful pages and popped them into a binder.

Many of you may wonder why I don't go digital with these types of things and there are a few simple reasons.
  • I like to have the ability to carry my lists with me, in the car, by my bedside, at my desk, at the park with the kids.  Anywhere I go, I want the ability to access my items.
  • I can't stand managing tasks on small screens.  I know I can carry my phone with me, but to manage all of my different tasks and ideas on a small screen isn't my cup of tea {I use it for my family calendar, but that is about it}.
  • I haven't found a digital version of managing it "ALL" that I love.  I have looked, but nothing fits me as well.
  • I get satisfaction from writing things down, and then checking them off.  Weird, but it is what works for me.
So.... I did the binder thing for awhile, and found that since I like to take it with me, the binder was a bit bulky and I wasn't using it as much as I hoped.

Organizing is about always evolving your ideas until you get it just right.  So, when the binder wasn't working 100%, I tried again.  I thought about how I would always be carrying around a notebook, that the flexibility and size was much better than a binder.  If I could marry the binder printables and the notebook size, I would be in organized blog heaven, so I ran to Staples and spent a few bucks to have my pages spiral bound instead.

It worked!  Love when that happens!

Staples can also spiral bind blank tabs, so I went that route as well.  Here are the supplies I used to take this project home.

I decided to use my newly found love of Washi tape for labeling folders, to spice up the white divider tabs.  Then, topped off the pretty tabs with some printed labels from my label maker.

Inside, I added a calendar for the rest of this year and for all of next, which will allow for me to better plan out my post topics, guest posts, contributor posts and reader spaces.

I paper clipped a small stack of colorful stickers to mark dates in which I owe a contributing post to another blog or website.

The other pages contain all sorts of exciting little ideas I have for the future of IHeart Organizing, and look a little like this.

Each page gives me the space to jot down ideas and wish list items, which I can joyfully cross off when they come to life.

I keep a pencil pouch tucked under the cover {I didn't think to see if one could be bound}, which holds my all time favorite planner pens {I have tested many}, some page flags and my USB flash drive.

I am happy to report that I am in love with this little setup.  It has been working great and I use it daily.

Let's chat!  Are you a digital peep or do you love to personally write down your thoughts?  What are some fabulous apps for those that love to be techy?  What other ways do you keep track of your daily blogging tasks?

If you are looking to put together your own blog planner, I added the pages to my Etsy shop here.

  2. I actually had this very same feeling a few weeks ago! I decided to keep mine digital because that way when I'm logged on, I'm on... and when I'm not, I'm not. I like keeping a bit of seperation between my personal life, my career, and my blog. Your note boom and printables are super cute! Thanks for sharing!

  5. What a great concept. I'm a little jealous. I use the calendar funciton on my phone, but mostly I carry around a date book that I use for appointments and such. I also carry a hard-back journal that I use for blog planning, etc, and I generally carry around at least 1 mini-notebook for my to-do lists and chores. It's a lot to carry around, but I haven't found anything else that works. And I change my mind too often to stick with just one thing.

For instance, several months ago I made a whole binder for my menu plans, grocery list, and pantry inventory. And I used it for maybe a month. Then someone else makes a free printable that I like and I start using that one.

It's probably a good thing I don't try to turn my little blog into a business - I'd be dead broke! =(

  6. Well, I may not be a blogger, but I sure do like organization in every way. I tend to go digital with all my "post its" using Evernote. I love it because I can keep multiple notebooks and tons of notes within each. It has helped me to keep track of Christmas lists, things that need to get done around the house, recipes i want to try, etc. etc. The only thing it would be missing is the calendar it appears.

Although I love the printed out version, I hate carrying anything around with me, unless absolutely necessary.

    2. I love how your notebook turned out. Very cute!

I use Evernote for blogging, as well as for many personal and work related tasks. I have a notebook for blog topics where I research, brainstorm, outline and rough draft. I have another notebook where I have a note for brainstorming topics and having a rough schedule of when I want to publish which topic. Another note for website related ideas. I love Evernote, because I can access it from any device. I can jot something down quick on my phone, then write more extensive stuff on a computer later. I can clip websites or snap a picture.

Here is my post on how I use Evernote: http://ngnrdgrl.wordpress.com/2012/07/02/evernote2/

  10. I am in the same boat! I spend so much money trying out every type of planner. I always revert to my Google calendar because its always with me (work, home, cell and tablet)but its just best I've found, not perfect. Then I have a folder with a zillion organizing apps (to do list, grocery list, home inventory, recipes, puppy records, online school info etc) I've tried "editing" a premade journal with printables but meh... I love love your idea of taking it in to get bonded at staples! I don't have a blog, but could use all of my favorite printables and put them together :-)

I was nervous that I would be replacing pricey cartridges frequently, but I still am using the ones that came with the printer almost a year later, and I print quite a bit.

  12. Such cute printables!!!
I currently have a great system of jotting ideas down in my reporter moleskine that goes everywhere with me in case I'm suddenly inspired (which is often). It would be GREAT if moleskines came with these cute printables inside!

And, I too love making list just for the satisfaction of getting to cross things off.

  13. I guess that I'm a hybrid I LOVE my Google calendar and use it for all the crazy that is our family schedule but when it comes to grocery lists and to do lists I love a paper and pen there's just something about crossing things off that list that feels so good! Sometimes I'll add things to my list that I've already done so that I can cross them off. I love this idea of a custom notebook so many ways that this could be used...

    2. Hi! :)

I love, love, love your blog!

I use Google Calendar for appointments and reminders (birthdays, holidays, etc). I color code and annotate each. Then I use ColorNote (it's only an app) for checklists and notes. These are all color coded and annotated too. To avoid squinting at a 2" screen, you can buy a generic 7" tablet (smaller and more lightweight than your notebook). They are sometimes called a "developer's copy" because it's not an official google based tablet. With a couple of easy work arounds you can also get iTunes and the nook app on it too. And it has wifi based internet. They cost about $200. That may work for you as well. I find Evernote too complicated. If you need files, you can pop your usb into the tablet too. Hope this helps! :)

  15. First off, I am obsessed with your site--its such a bright part of my day when I read your posts. You are amazingly creative!

Love this post with inspiration on how to keep an organized blog. I personally love Levenger- http://www.levenger.com/circa-notebooks-326.aspx (not sure if you have heard of them). But you can literally add and remove pages as needed into a spiral notebook. I take my notebook everywhere with me. You can also buy their punch so you can punch other items like your calendar pages. I hope its ok I posted their link on here--its just such an awesome product.

Thanks for the daily inspirations, you are the best!!!!!

  16. I agree with you in using paper vs electronics! This year when it came time to buy my calendar(which works very well for an active family of 7), I found out that BusyBodyBooks went out of business. I panicked. My close friend said "time to switch to your calendar on your phone"...but I couldn't do it. I scoured the web and found something usable, but not AS good as BusyBodyBoo

If you ever start your own organizing business, let me know. I will come and work for you :) I had my own until the economy crashed...and I also live in WI!!!

  17. This is off topic, but I had a question about your binder (house). I made my own because your colors weren't for our family and LOVE it. But, I've had problems finding pens that don't wipe off when I close it.

Everyone says they use dry erase markers since they keep their papers in sheet protectors, but mine smudge, wipe off or come off on the opposite page. I invested in wet erase markers and unfortunately, they do they exact same thing. I don't want to keep printing sheets, but I can't even use my binder since nothing writes on it and stays.

    Advice?

Usually for my family's calendar, I like to go digital, but for blogging purposes, when it comes to brainstorming ideas, editorial calendars and such, I tend to lean for paper and pen. 21. I have to say I like digital. I used to keep track of my calorie count each day on paper and after a few weeks I got bored with writing almost the same things down day after day and eventually quit counting calories. About seven weeks ago, my husband bought me a Nook for my birthday and I found the Cozi app. I LOVE it for all of my appointments. I carry my NOOK with me everywhere I go and now I can see all of my appointments. And, because of the NOOK I also found an app called Lose It and I am much more accountable with my calorie counting using that app than when I used paper and pen. I am happy to say that because of that, I am down 7 lbs!!! :)

  22. I have several questions about your binder. I have never had anything bound before.

    1. How did you create the cover of your binder?
    2. Is the cover just paper or is it laminated? If it is laminated did you have to do this or does Staples? 3. What size is the binder?
    4. Does Staples sell the white tab dividers?
    5. Where did you find the pouch for the inside cover?

Any details that you can provide about the actual process of putting the binder together would be wonderful. I am new to this level of organization. I apologize for so many questions! Thank you so much!

    2. Hi there!

The cover of the binder is just my printable under a piece of protective plastic, that was included when I had it bound at Staples. If you look at their site, you may be able to find more details, I believe the style I went with is under their "presentation" category.

      http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/programs/copyandprint/copies_printing.html

The pages are all standard print size and Staples does offer the option to include the white cardstock divider tabs as well {which is what I did}.

I had never been to Staples before for this type of project, but they are GREAT and helpful. You can either bring in your printed pages or bring in your PDF's on a USB drive and they can print for you. They have all sorts of options, I basically just told them what I wanted and they helped me select what was best. I put the pages in order at their counter and they then spiral bound it for me.

I found the pencil pouch at Target for $1 around back to school time. I believe they still carry them however in the office supply area. I didn't have that bound inside.

  26. I have been struggling with my blog planning for a while now. I was using my Erin Condren planner for both personal and blogging, but it soon became too cluttered. And often I just needed to dump my brain. I had every intention of creating a planner similar to the one you made with calendars, and different sections, but I don't have the time or money right now to do it. I was able to get a PlanAhead planner on clearance after school started. It has plenty of space for each day and a monthly calendar for each month. It goes through Dec 2013, so I am set until next year! :)

  27. I use to be a binder kind of gal, but my hubby bought me an iPad a couple Christmas' ago, which I swore I would never use, and now it is like a third arm. No way I could stay organized without it.

I have an app for everything and if I don't like one I just change it til it fits. For example, I have a housecleaning app, a calorie counter, a writing app, my blogger app, awesome notes for all those lists such as grocery, dinner menus, etc. plus I can take it anywhere in my purse.

I also take pictures of my rooms and paint colors so I can access them if I see something I like to add.

I use to miss the handwriting aspect of it, but now most allow you to use a stylus.

    1. We also have an iPad and I think I just need to make more time to explore the apps and really utilize all of the functionality they offer. Right now, I basically just use it for on the go browsing and staying connected socially.

  29. I'm a digital person. I use Springpad for all my notes and recipes. I have a 7 inch tablet that fits in my purse so I can take it everywhere. I can also access all my info from my phone. I use cozi for my calendar so my boyfriend and I can both access it to see if we are free to make plans.

I use Grocery IQ for my grocery list because I can share it with him as well. He stops at the store a lot on the way home from work and he will check the list from his phone to see if I need anything.

I used to love organizing with notebooks, going digital saves money, time and space. I live in a small cabin there is no room to store all that paper. I will admit though I miss making my notebooks:-)

I carry around a planner and small notebook because I love to write things down...in real life, not on a screen. Even at work I use a notebook with check off lists to keep organized. It's just a different feeling and mindset to actually write it and check it off when it's done. Love your personalized, self made planner/organizer!

  44. I love this idea! I have a To-Do notebook, but it's not great for the longer-term stuff, like blog posts, story ideas, website developments and house projects that I want to do.
I'd tried doing my own print outs, but it was just too hard to carry around even a small file, with my work laptop, gym gear and everything else I might have with me when I leave the house. A custom-made notebook would be perfection!

  47. It looks fabulous Jen! I have always written things down as well. Lists change so frequently. It is way quicker to handwrite than to mess with an 'app'. Electronic planners were just tedious and annoying (the small screens). I carry my planner around with me but it is a purchased one and doesn't have blank pages for notes. Maybe I should make my own :) Thanks for the inspiration.

    1. Hi Brianna!

Not lame at all :) It was from Target awhile back, for around $2. I don't think they carry them any longer, it was with a seasonal line. I purchased three and we typically use them in the car for the kids, but every once in awhile, I snag one from them and use it for toting my things around the house. Maybe it is time for me to find one of my own :)

  49. I walk everywhere and my purse is already too big since I have to carry everything with me, so I use Evernote. Evernote is also fantastic for those ideas you may want to access months/years down the line. Google's gmail task list is also great because you can drag things around to change the order of your tasks, you get as many lists as you want, and you can still cross off tasks to get that visual satisfaction.

  52. I am a bit techie, however, nothing beats a grocery list off a (1.) magnetic notepad off my fridge! I buy them in bulk at Michaels. They even have them on clearance sometimes for .50 and have weekly meal tear off pads too. Love-love! I also use (2.) Google calendar to sync my phone, ipad, iphone and laptop so no matter where I am, I won't miss that alarm for appointments. AND I use a (3.) Shutterfly custom calender for our extended families birthdays and anniversaries. I update the pics every year of my favorite family photos. I have tried evernote and Springpad but to me, its too much. Love your blog!

  56. I'm somewhere stuck in the middle of old-fashioned handwritten list making and technical... so I end up creating list and forms online then printing them out. I don't like my handwriting, so I'm always editing and reprinting...

I love the idea of the spiral bound, but I'm afraid that I'd want to add or take out too many pages... I've tried tons of different page planners and digital planners but just can't find the perfect one for me.

I also would like a notebook that is maybe 4x6 or 5x7 so it fits in my purse. The 8 1/2x11 is just too big.

And my final problem is that I might find a solution that works for me, but not my husband. I can't get him to get on board with a solution. He's way old fashioned and still carries around his Franklin binder and never looks at the family calendar...

  57. Jen, you and I share the same note style, I don't blog(I read so many good ones) but I did the same kind of thing for my weekly errands, monthly meal planning etc. Some of the forms I used were your freebies. I used pretty file folders for my tab pages and included pockets. I think the pen holder is a must for next time. I color copied the pages I wanted, freebies gathered from blogland, and had them spiral bound just like yours. It cost about the same as I have spent on other types of organizers but was individualized for me. It has worked VERY well for me and I am thinking about doing one for other projects. Love your blog and Ideas.

  74. Jen, I really enjoy your blog. I love your planner and have forwarded your post to a few of my friends who are paper people. I have fallen in love with the Evernote App. You can have a different "notebooks" with multiple "notes" in each. I have installed the app on my iPhone / iPad / Mac / work PC and everything syncs automatically. If I'm in a store and have an idea I pull out my phone and make a note and it automatically shows on all of my devices. It is fun to use. I have a "notebook" for shopping, recipes, favorite blogs, van maintenance, organization projects, for each of my children, family medical notes, etc. I haven't gone all digital though. I still carry a paper calendar!

I couldn't find time to get to Staples to get my new organizer pages done with the spiral binding, so I bought a machine/press thing that punches the holes and everything so I can make my own spural notebooks. I was just wondering if you could tell me the size of the planner? I want to make one in a similar style, but my buddy at Office Max is confusing me. Did you print everything out and then have them bind it, or have them print and bind it. From what I'm understanding, it's .49 per sheet, so that seems like it would start to add up pretty quickly for a two year calendar plus all of your note pages.

  101. I've been playing around with the idea of making my own planner for a while. I've jumped between dozens of notebooks but never seem to keep them organized. I am fairly reliable about using one and only one type of organization, my pocket calendar. So, taking a page from you and several other pintrest posts I think I'm going to take the plunge. Also a bit of useless information to clog your brain, when you write out your ideas and tasks they become goals, when you physically scratch off those goals from your list you train your body to release serotonin, a feel good chemical into your brain, and the repeat of the process is mildly addicting. (Don't we all wanna feel good?! That's why we do the things that make us feel good!) So, you are training yourself to be addicted to getting things done! Yay!
