56 UHeart Organizing: Children's Chore Charts

Today is a big day!  Our very first installment of UHeart Organizing!  Please give Courtney a warm welcome as she stops by from A Thoughtful Place to share her creative method for keeping her kids excited with some of their household tasks.

Hello, I Heart Organizing readers! I am thrilled to be hanging out here today sharing something that is working wonders in our household. Back to school is just around the corner and I needed to do something to eliminate the broken record syndrome. Does any of this sound familiar, “Did you make your bed? Have you brushed your teeth? Has the fish been fed? Can you set the table, please!” I hear myself over and over and I know how redundant the routine is sounding. My oldest will be entering first grade and the mornings are about to start much earlier. I decided we not only needed a chore chart, but a system that would include the daily routine as well. With most of the supplies already on hand, this is what I came up with:

I thought long and hard about how I wanted to do this. I knew that pockets would be the best for my little ones so I made it my mission to find library pockets. Do you all remember those? Luckily, a darling scrapbooking store that is right in my town pulled through with a package containing 12 {exactly what I needed}. They can also be found on Amazon here if you are on the search. The only other purchase I made was the Martha Stewart chalkboard labels {Staples}. I must admit though, that the homemade version of these are just as effective if not better. I also hit up my local paint store for some paint chips.

The idea behind this was to make it a very visual chart so that anyone in the family could quickly look at it and know if the jobs had been completed. To accomplish this, I used a red and green card method {red for stop, and green for go}. Each pocket would host two cards. If the task still needs to be done, there will be a red card showing. When the task is completed, our kiddos switch their card to green {placing the red card behind}. It’s super quick and simple and they children LOVE switching their cards. I think it gives them a sense of accomplishment much like when we cross something off from our list. Visually, they are motivated to see all green cards. I chose paint chips that were a little bit more of a muted green and red {just more appealing to me and for the hallway that it is hanging in}.

The fabric was leftover from when I recently lined my built-in bookcase. It was purchased at Hobby Lobby. Luckily, I had a 16 x 20 frame that was no longer being used so I took off the back and placed the fabric right behind the glass.

Once your fabric is behind the glass and you have closed up the backing, trim the access fabric so it will hang nicely on the wall.

Once my fabric was in place, I trimmed the library pockets and paint chips to make them shorter {I wanted to be able to fit all 12 pockets on my frame}.

The beauty of these is that they just peel and stick. In under a minute I had my 12 pockets and red/green card system read to go.

What is pretty cool about the library card pocket set I found is that they came with calendar cards {12 of them}.  So here is how it all works!  Each night when we are doing the bedtime routine, we check the chore chart with the kiddos {which takes three seconds since it is very visual} and give them a check mark if they completed their tasks.  And it's really not an option... they need to do their tasks!  We talk about how they are more like their household and personal responsibilities.  At the end of each week, if they have all of their check marks, they will receive their full allowance.  You can see more on how I do that here.

I decided to use chalkboard labels so that I can easily update, erase or change their chores as necessary.  I bought a package of large labels and just cut each one in half and cut the corners.

Using a chalkboard maker I wrote down their personal responsibilities and chores. For my son who is not reading yet, I used little picture cues to help.

You know what they say. Location!  Location!  Location!  The same rule applies for a chore chart! It is hanging in our upstairs hallway directly outside of their bedrooms and bathroom. This makes it easy for them to go straight to it after most tasks. The fish is also in their bathroom so we made it very easy for them!

This has been a huge hit with the kids.  They love doing a task and changing their card to green.  At the end of the night when they have received their check mark from us, they both reset their cards to red for the next morning.

And for all of you super sleuths who only spy one "brush teeth" pocket, we do actually brush our teeth twice in this house, however, this one applies to the morning. Remember, I am trying to speed up our morning routine and the broken record system prior to school starting. So the make bed, feed fish, and brush teeth all happen before school!

I can’t tell you how nice it is to pour coffee in the morning and here my son bound down the stairs saying, “I did more chores, mommy!”  Ahhhh.  Let’s hope this trend continues.  And as they grow, I can remove the personal responsibilities from the chart and add more chores to help around the home. What about you all?  Do you have an effective system in place.   It’s always nice to share and learn what works in different homes.

"Do you believe in love at first sight? I sure do because when I first stumbled upon I Heart Organizing I immediately fell in love with Jen's mad organizational skills. I think we all long for a calm, organized, well styled life. I am the author of A Thoughtful Place blog where I dish on all things related to decorating, organizing, entertaining, and of course DIY-ing! To be quite honest, working on making my house a home is my happy place. It fulfills my need to be creative and I love sharing ideas {both big and small} with my readers. Along with my blog, I am a contributing writer to House of Fifty and have recently started my own decorating firm, Casey Grace Design, LLC,  with my talented sister.  I call Orange County, California home where I live with amazing husband and two children. At the end of a busy day, I love to enjoy an ice cold beer on the front porch with my hubby while we watch our children ride their bikes or run around. Life is sweet and I am thrilled to be a part of the IHeart Organizing Team."

36 Reader Space: That's a Wrap!

I love a good tutorial for DIY organizing storage, so when Christina popped over a project she whipped up thanks to a tutorial found in Flea Market Style magazine, I couldn't wait to share the awesomeness!

Christina wrote:

Hi Jen!

I have been wanting to send you a link to a wrapping paper organizer that I made a few weeks ago.  You can find the step by step tutorial here.  It really is an easy sewing project that I love!  Look how organized my wrapping paper and accessories are!  Hope you like it as much as I do!

Have a great summer,
Christina

Here is the finished wrapping paper storage project!

How sweet is that?!  Any idea what she used to make such awesomeness?  I will give you a clue:

So stinkin' great right?!

You can find all of the step by step sewing details over on Christina's blog here, but here are some of the highlights:

Materials Needed:

  • Kitchen stool. Keep your eyes open for one at the thrift store or yard sales. I used a stool we had but were no longer using. I actually bought it a few years ago at Walmart for about $20.
  • Fabric: To make two larger bags and two smaller bags like I did you are going to need about 2 1/2 yards of fabric or one $5 twin flat sheet from Walmart. Of course you will need more fabric depending on the size of your stool and the design of your fabric chosen.
  • 4 Casters. You can buy these at any hardware store.
  • 2 packages of bias tape or about 4 yards of homemade bias tape. (Of course you could use ribbon as well.) And really the amount needed depends on how long your want your ties to be.

Christina sewed up all the pockets and attached them to the stool:

Once the compartments were finished up and attached, the fun part comes, which is filling it up and loving the end result!

It's times like this when I just gasp at the fact that anything really can function as anything you wish it to be with a little imagination, creativity and determination.  Who would have thought a simple stool could double as wrapping paper storage?

  • Christina found a tutorial in a magazine and wasn't afraid to tackle the project on her own.  Check out the end results!
  • The entire project only took about two hours and was far less expensive than a typical store bought wrapping paper cart.
  • I love when sewing equals storage.  I. Must. Learn. To. Sew.  I would be making storage pockets and pouches left and right.  So awesome!
  • The outcome of the project is quite compact when you take a look at the number of items and supplies being stored.
  • I love the casters added to allow for quick and easy mobility!

Lets chat about the endless possibilities of modified storage.  What is something you turned into storage, that wasn't originally intended to be?  Any other creative solutions for wrangling all those wrapping supplies?

ATTENTION!!  Want to be featured in a Reader Space edition?  Have an awesome organizing story to share?  I am looking for projects that have made a positive impact to your life.  Please submit your story and photos here and I would heart to feature them right here, on the blog!!  Photos should be high resolution and unedited.  Please include a description of the project, including any costs, inspiration, and how it has changed your life and routine for the better!  Oh, and no worries my friends, we will NEVER judge "before" pictures because that just wouldn't be nice!  Only love goes on at this blog!

57 IHeart FLOR Carpet Tiles & a GIVEAWAY!

I mentioned yesterday that this week I am partnering up with the incredible Steph from Modern Parents Messy Kids to offer up one of my biggest giveaways yet!

FLOR carpet tiles popped each of us over a few boxes of carpet tiles to play around with, and that is exactly what we did.

They actually let me select which tiles I wanted, talk about a major impossibility!  Their selection is AMAZING!

When it came to selecting tiles and which space was going to get the FLOR love, I ultimately landed back in our playroom.  I know I know, I am already on rug numero dos in there {this would make the third}, but let me explain.

The rug in there worked great with the last layout, but when we added the benches... check out what happened...

There was a giant gap between the end of the rug and the entertainment center on the other side of the room.  And finding a rug that was more square than rectangular, hasn't been the easiest on my internet browsing skills.  It just wasn't "right".

Since FLOR tiles can be placed in any pattern, in any shape, size and configuration, I knew they were a great option for the awkward play space.  And since they can be picked up, washed and reused {if they ever get dirty}, again, the playroom was the winner since my kids practically live in that space.

Once I removed the previous rug {which now lives in my studio - SCORE!},  the room already felt bigger and better!

Surprisingly, I decided to stay boring and go with a neutral.  Out of all the fabulous colors and textures, I pick a standard herringbone neutral tile.  I just didn't think the room could handle any more bold colors, which made me sigh inside, but it was absolutely the right choice.  Plus, the texture and pattern absolutely rock my world!

Laying the tiles was super simple.  Like the big kid that I am, I was able to install them all by myself.  I stared by measuring and equal distance between the tiles and the square of the bench...

And laying down the out edge.

See how great those tiles fill the whole space?  It really evens things out!

Moving the tiles around was really easy!  I love that they have a rubber backing so they don't slide around, yet I can still move them around until things are just right.

Look at how much brighter and bigger the room looks!  LOVE.

To ensure things don't move while the kids are building legos or train tracks or playing "Just Dance", once I had the placement right, I connected the tiles together with the stickers provided with the tiles.

Now, everything is nice and secure and looking fabulous!

Third time really is a charm!  The kids now have a super plush, soft and large space to play!

Now, you can go through the challenge of selecting an amazing set of tiles for one of your spaces too!  Flor is offering one lucky IHeart Organizing reader 30 carpet tiles their choice!  And because I am partnering with one of my favorite blogs, Modern Parents, Messy Kids, you can also gain extra entries by going to her site and entering her giveaway as well!  So exciting!

{enter using the giveaway management tool below, just follow the simple steps}

Finally if you really just want your rug now, FLOR is having their annual summer sale and offering 15% off everything until July 31st, 2012!  Just enter the code 15SUM12F in store, online or by calling 866.433.3567.

Best of luck to you all!

66 What a Week at IHeart Organizing!

All sorts of lovely wonderful things are happening and I am so excited to be writing up this post!  It's absolutely a milestone of a week here at IHeart Organizing, one that I never would have expected when I started blogging just a few years back!

I am beyond giddy excited to announce to you your new IHeart Organizing contributors!

Let me start out by saying that I was overwhelmed with the amount of interest that we sparked when I made a call for contributors.  I had over 200 applicants and found an overwhelming amount of talent and incredibly inspirational individuals {along with oodles of new blogs to stalk!}  It took me days to make the final selection {talk about an awesome challenge!}, so a huge congratulations and warm welcome to those that will be writing some fabulous and fresh new content!

Say hello to these lovely ladies!

"I'm Ashley from 7th House on the Left - a blog where my husband, Greg, and I talk about renovating, decorating and living in our first house here in Hanover, Virginia. I’ve been an interior design enthusiast and a long-time fan of all things organizing. Yep, I was the kid with the perfectly arranged Disney stuffed animals, alphabetized coloring books and the categorized and color-coded sticker book. When I'm not busy writing or doing projects around the house, I love classic TV shows (particularly I Love Lucy) and curling up with Greg, Bentley (our 9-pound Pomeranian), a blanket and a good black and white classic movie – I’m a complete sucker for Audrey Hepburn, Doris Day, Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant films. I'm thrilled and honored to be a part of the IHeart Organizing team and excited to get to work!"

"Hi, I'm Cassie, a DIY and design-obsessed Texas girl, and lover of travel, fashion, sarcasm and Mexican food. When I'm not hanging with my sweet and funny family, you can find me kicking the '80s out of our home, one budget project at a time, on my blog Hi Sugarplum!"

My greatest loves include fresh peonies, Dirty Dancing (Nobody puts Baby in a corner), Banoffe Pie, spending waaay too much time on Pinterest, and hugging random dogs at the park.  I currently live in Sydney, Australia with my husband, Andy, and her 11 year old Border Collie, Soda. As a long time fan, I am super excited to be joining the IHeart Organizing Team!"

"Hey friends!  I'm Chelsea from Two Twenty One!  I'm a twenty-something living in Indiana with my husband, Brad, and our crazy mutt, Jack.  My loves are photography, travel, DIY projects, baking, wine, sarcasm and my iPhone.  The husband and I are attempting to make our home a little less cookie cutter and a lot more awesome.  My little slice of the internet, Two Twenty One, is where I share my latest home improvement projects, furniture makeovers, crafts, recipes and home & seasonal decor ideas.  I am beyond excited to join Jen and the rest of the IHeart Organizing team!"

"My name is Sarah Eelkema and I live in a suburb of Minneapolis, MN with my husband of almost two years, Eric, and our two adorable Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Hermes and Brontë. During the summer I can be found lounging in the garden or at the gym . . . one of those was a lie. And in the last 5 years I’ve made more then 2000 cupcakes. I want to bake, eat and organize. Hand me some eggs, flour and an unorganized kitchen, that’s my idea of a great weekend, okay go ahead throw Ryan Gosling in there too."

You will notice throughout the week that they will be added to the sidebar and also to the "My Team" page, and will be rotating their awesomeness once per week.  I can't wait to see how they mix thing up around here and bring us some super fun and fresh organizing projects to drool and swoon over {no pressure right?!}

I am doing my best to hold back happy tears as I type this, however, it isn't all that easy....

For the next few days I will be hosting a few darling folks from Better Homes & Gardens STORAGE Magazine!!!!

I will be back soon to share more details and some behind the scenes action of the photo shoot, but long story short, I was contacted by the amazing crew over at BHG and asked if I would be interested in a feature!  I was like, wait, you must have emailed the wrong Jen Jones at IHeart Organizing!?!?  Because seriously, this is my all time FAVORITE publication.  The one I am consistently stalking newsstands for each quarter.  The one I run home and devour every last page within ten minutes, only to re-read and oooh and ahhhhh over and over and over again until the next one comes out.  The magazine that has it's own special stack at my desk.  The mecca of home organizational magazines.  And they contacted yours truly.  Talk about a life altering moment that I am eternally excited and grateful for.  So this is the week!  They are here and already stopped in to walk through our home and drop off some of the fresh flowers for the shoot!

I really have you all to thank for helping make all of these magical moments happen.  Without your daily love, I wouldn't be writing this here blog and preparing for one of the coolest opportunities ever.  So THANK YOU to you all for popping by each day and for your daily words of encouragement, for sharing your ideas, for dropping a sweet line on my facebook wall or tweeting something special.  From the bottom of my super smiley heart, I know these amazing milestones {contributors, great giveaways and Storage magazine!?!} all happen because of YOU and your daily love.
