4 Reader Space: A Perfect Pairing of Work and Play

Reader Spaces are back baby, and they are back with a bang!

I met the beautiful Mallory during a work event last year, and I was completely taken away by both her sweetness and style.  She loves color (whoop!) and fashion and home and life, and shares it all on her blog Style Your Senses.  Mallory has a way with creating lovely layered spaces that are completely my cup of tea (she does a wonderful job mixing in blues and pinks).  And when she recently revealed a space she worked on for her and her daughter, I also fell in love with her storage and ability to create a cohesive and playful space for two.  Not to mention it was a great opportunity to take in a pink room, because we all know it is my absolute favorite color!  Whether you are looking to create a workspace, a play space, or both, there are plenty of inspirational ideas to go around!

What is the main function of the space?

"The space is such a huge footprint in our house, so it really has to serve multiple functions as a playroom for our daughter and an office for me. Overall, we wanted it to be a cohesive, fun and creative space where we could happily co-exist."

Any superstar tips for keeping it organized?

"I'm actually relying on my 3 year old for most of that! Aside from really taking control of my craft closet, the daily tasks of organization really have to do with her toys. Instead of throwing everything into large storage baskets, I came up with smaller storage solutions to sort toys by type and have turned it into a game for her. She quickly learned where everything goes not only does it make clean-up super easy and fast, but I'm also finding that she's playing with everything more because she knows where to find it all.

The biggest thing that I learned from the first time that we tried to make this space functional was that there HAD to be tons of storage involved this go round. I decided to make nearly the entire length of the room’s far right wall into storage. I took a whole day at IKEA and really mapped out what I needed. We already had the center unit on casters and decided to leave it that way and let it serve as a little reading bench. The 4 cubby units flanking the bench are also KALLAX in high gloss white from IKEA."

What items did you find were essential when organizing this space and why?

"The IKEA Kallax shelving I mentioned above. Making the entire left wall into storage using various shelving shapes really gave us an organization frame work and set us up for success. To give it depth and interest, I used various groups of baskets, small groups of books, playful objects and even pillows to make t not only functional but also pretty.

In the closet I started out by ripping out the original closet hardware and installing two stacked shelves, which I knew would hold shoe box storage containers with craft knick knacks sorted by type. I also had the hubby install a simple peg board and I’ve used inexpensive pegs to hang and display wrapping necessities, gift bags, etc, because before they were so hidden that I would just continue to buy more as I never seemed to be able to find them when I needed them.

I then bought another set of cubby shelves to store Landry’s puzzles, games and busy books. Since these are chunky and take up a lot of space, hiding them in the closet was the most aesthetically pleasing option and this cubby worked out perfectly. We also store all of her baby doll furniture in here as well for the same reason.

The biggest game changer has definitely been the over the door organizer. It’s freed up so much space within the closet and I love that I can see everything arranged vertically and access it very easily. I was leery about spending over $100 on it, but I will tell you that it’s hands down the best money I’ve spent in months. I’m already dreaming up a massive pantry makeover with this bad boy! If you don’t have at least one of these in your home, trust me on this one!

Now, here’s a look at the other side of the 'office' where there is storage and necessities like the printer. The chest is also from IKEA and is the MALM in white. I purchased a glass top for it since the printer sits on top of it."

What did you do to go the extra mile and "make it pretty"?

"The very first thing that we did was completely clear the room. We took everything off of the walls and painted the entire room white (Sherwin Williams: Alabaster), which really opened it up and accentuated every ounce of natural light coming through that one small window. I still can’t believe the difference a coat of white paint can make! It completely transformed this space from a dark dungeon-like room, into a bright, airy and open space that feels happy…

I really splurged on design elements in my office space. Just because it's a shared space, didn't mean my office couldn't feel sophisticated and glam. The mirrored bamboo desk was definitely the spring board for the design and everything else fell into place. I also got some of my favorite art prints framed in gorgeous gold bamboo, which makes the small space feel custom."

What items did you DIY to stay on a budget?

"I was set on the marquee letter focal point in the playroom. When I began researching marquee letters, I found that most of the battery operated options were well over $30 each (which meant at least $150 to spell out #PLAY) and that was simply out of the budget that I had in mind. I ended up finding these letters on clearance for $6 each and spray painting them (meticulously covering each bulb) gold to achieve the look that I wanted. It turned out to be such a great focal and gives the room a big bang for the buck... plus Landry thinks it really cool!"

How has the space impacted your life for the better?

"It's been amazing for us! It's a space where we can play, work, interact and be creative in together and has really made working from home (while still being a stay at home mom) so much easier for me."

___________

So what do you think?  With so many parents working from home these days, do you think you could share a space with your little?  Or do you need solitude and separation (that's me).  I think it is a great compromise to get things done while allowing kids to entertain themselves and their pals (and keep a close eye on younger ones), as long as some sound canceling headphones are involved.  In fact, after a reader suggested I try out the headphones, it has been ridiculously helpful in keeping me focused, so thank you!

The room has a lot of great zones setup to ensure it can serve a variety of purposes.  There is a place to work, to play, to read, to sit, to twirl, to create with arts and crafts, to store toys and to tuck away craft/gift wrap clutter.

Aside from the color palette, what I love most is the mix of high and low as well as a balance of form and function.  Mallory did such a great job sourcing a few key expensive pieces, and then utilizing thrift store and IKEA finds to take care of the rest.  She created such a striking balance in a space used by both a young child and an adult.  You can check out her planning process and before photos here, and catch the full reveal (including product sources) on her blog here.

11 Reader Space: A Glorious Gift Wrap Station

I truly love when you all pop over your proudly organized spaces.  In fact, in terms of blogging, I don't think much makes me happier.  I really enjoy celebrating with you, sharing your ideas and utilizing your tips and tricks within the projects we also do in our own home.

Today's storage project is a perfect example of how you inspire me.  Although we already have a gift wrap station that we use frequently and are over-the-moon happy with, the combination of pieces selected for this project got my wheels turning.

Maria blogs over at Graceful Order and we are kindred organizing spirits.  I love that she enjoys sharing practical solutions, yet you can also tell she puts a piece of her heart into everything she works on.  Her recent gift wrap storage station is no exception; created from a combination of thought and attention to detail, it is sure to keep her in the giving spirit year after year.

But if you are like me and already have a gift wrap station, or maybe don't find the need for so much storage dedicated to a single activity, I urge you to read on and check out the organizational items she selected for this project anyway.  This smart little setup could be used in endless ways, and I hope it sparks and idea or two for you as well.

What is the main function of the space?

"When we moved into our home eleven years ago, my husband and I had so many plans for our home. We wanted to build a pool, remodel the kitchen, build out the closets and have wrap-around storage in our garage. My awesome husband, who happens to be super handy, decided to tackle the garage project first since he couldn't exactly build the pool (although I'm sure he toyed with the idea). I wanted storage for all of our entertaining items and a designated space for all of my gift wrapping supplies. I thought I needed a full cabinet but it tuned out that half the cabinet was plenty of space (the remainder of the items are party supplies)."

Any superstar tips for keeping it organized?

"Keeping this space organized is pretty easy since everything has a home. Even when I am in a rush and I can't put everything back right away, it is a breeze to quickly get it back in order. A tip that I have is to not over-buy items. I am guilty of buying way too much gift wrapping paper because I love the patterns and then I end up using a gift bag when I am in a time crunch. Right now my gift wrapping drawer is completely full so when that cute paper at HomeGoods starts to whisper to me during checkout, I look in the other direction. By the way, why do they always put the gift wrap bins by the checkout area? They probably know that we have already lowered our defenses and are more susceptible to pretty floral prints! There's a master plan behind this, I tell ya!"

What items did you find were essential when organizing this space and why?

"Adding drawers to the cabinets made a huge difference in how organized the space remains. This space has pretty much looked like this for 11 years and only the items change but the systems stay the same. The drawers make it so easy to put things back where they belong. I also think that adding the bins that hold birthday cards and an area to place extra gifts made a huge difference. I can walk away from this space with a wrapped gift and even a card in hand."

What did you do to go the extra mile and "make it pretty"?

"It's not too difficult to make this space pretty because gift wrap and bows are already beautiful. I did separate the bows into color families using inexpensive plastic shoe boxes. This makes the drawers look neater but also helps me wrap items faster without making a mess, while looking for the right color bow."

How has it impacted your life for the better?

"I have to say that during the holidays or months that are full of birthdays, having this gift wrapping station is awesome! Putting gifts together can be hectic when you have little ones that are constantly invited to birthday parties. I used to have rolls of gift wrap in one closet and greeting cards in another and now I have everything in one spot and it's one thing less to stress about. Seriously, it's the little things that make a huge difference. Anything that brings more order and calm to my home has my vote. Mind you I am writing this while my youngest is crying hysterically over an animal cracker whose head fell off. Sigh. If anyone needs me I will be in my kitchen re-attaching the head of an edible hippo."

Maria's handy husband built her the cabinets of her dreams, and after a few trips to IKEA, she was able to customize them to create the exact storage she desired for her party and gift wrap supplies.  Looking at the combination of wire and solid drawers, I can think of so many ways that these additions would take any storage cabinet to the next level.  Pair the drawers with additional interior organizers and dividers and you have yourself a winning combination.  Truly, anytime you can create pull-out storage solutions, you are making your life a trillion times easier.

This setup would work beautifully for children's toys and clothing, crafts, home decor accessories, garage maintenance items, cleaning supplies, a pantry, linens and even home office products.

Here are my favorite IKEA pull out storage components, many of which come with the necessary hardware/rails for easy installation.

As always, I am so grateful that Maria took the time to share her project and story with me and also allowed me to share it with all of you.  Let's keep the momentum going and continue to celebrate each and every organizing project we tackle and accomplish together!  You can see more of Maria's project and snag every last detail of the story on her blog here.

How would you make the most of this splendid cabinet setup?

15 Reader Space: A Home Office Created with Heart

Let's just declare this the, "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again" week.  Okay? Because I am in!

And before we enjoy today's amazing space, I just wanted to take a moment and say thank you so much for your kind comments on this week's kitchen post.  I am still in the process of replying to comments, but I have enjoyed reading each one.  And I agree, I am probably being too hard on myself, but it is hard to admit mistakes to myself, to my husband, to our family and to the internet world.  Especially when those mistakes may ultimately require a redo or may have been costly.  But you know what I loved most?  Hearing your stories!  And knowing that some of you are on your 7th lighting fixture or 4th dining chair.  I don't believe in settling and I appreciate hearing I am not alone, just as much as you appreciate hearing trials and errors from bloggers.  It is so fun to relate with others in similar situations, so again, THANK YOU!

Today's reader, Liz from Love Grows Wild, created an absolutely stunning and serene home office.  But it didn't happen quickly and she didn't settle.  Her story really stuck out to me, and I couldn't wait to share it with you.  It's OK to make changes and updates to your spaces until you love them.  It is OK to DIY and then change your mind.  It is OK to plug away at a space until your personality and style finally shines through.  Liz's home office is a testament to that!

And her blog?!  Let's just say, it's a keeper.  I love checking in on her inspiring photography and beautiful projects.  You may remember her magical mint desk that went viral last year.

"A whole year… yes, I know. What the heck took me so long, right? When I started this makeover last summer, I really wanted to challenge myself. I didn’t want to just slap a couple pictures on the wall, maybe paint a piece of furniture, and call it a day. I wanted to design a room from top to bottom that was beautiful, functional, organized, and 100% me. The problem was, (as I would soon discover) that I didn’t exactly know what 'me' was."

But with time, Liz discovered her style and created an absolutely beautiful space.  I asked Liz to stop by today to share her home office story with us.  A home office that was created with heart

What is the main function of the space?

"This room functions as our home office as well as a space to run my business. As I blogger, I needed this room to serve several different purposes: an area to work on the computer, plenty of space to do DIY projects, and a light, bright spot to shoot photography in. Getting this room organized was key to being able to accomplish all these tasks!"

Any superstar tips for keeping it organized?

"Get rid of anything you don't use on a regular basis and have a spot for everything you keep! Clutter tends to drive me crazy, so I regularly purge our home of items we no longer use or don't have space for. Depending on the item, I'll either donate or sell on Craigslist and garage sales. Then, once I know what is going to stay in the house, I find a specific spot for everything. I'm known to make a huge mess when in the office when working on projects for the blog, but because everything has its place, clean-up is a breeze!"

What items did you find were essential when organizing this space and why?

"I knew I was going to need a lot of storage space for this room, and I happened to have an antique china hutch in our dining room wasn't being used. We moved the big china hutch into our office and updated it from dark wood to clean, bright white using chalk paint. I added large glass jars, wood crates, and photo boxes to the shelves to hold a lot of my craft supplies and used the bottom half to hold office supplies. The large hutch really makes a statement in the room and added a TON of storage for us!"

What did you do to go the extra mile and "make it pretty"?

"I painted the walls and a lot of the furniture white and added some lovely vintage pieces that gave the room my signature farmhouse style. Rather than placing my desk up against the wall, I floated it in front of a sunny window to make a much more enjoyable place to work all day.

In the china hutch, I used glass jars to hold spools of pretty ribbon and paint brushes, which both stores them and creates a beautiful display.

To add style and functionality to the plain white photo boxes in the hutch, I created little vintage labels on my computer and added them to the boxes using double-sided tape."

What items did you DIY to stay on a budget?

"Rather than purchasing brand new furniture for the room, I re-purposed and re-finished a lot of pieces we already had. The hutch from the dining room and an old cabinet and book case were painted white to give the room a cohesive look, and I found my desk (which is actually a farmhouse dining room table!) for a great price at an antique store. I also brought in a round braided rug from our patio to use under my desk and made a DIY framed dry erase board to help keep me organized!"

How has it impacted your life for the better?

"Before I started this makeover on the office, the room was cluttered and uninspiring. The walls were dark gray, not a single piece of furniture matched, and I didn't have anything organized. Now that the room is finished, I'm able to get so much more work done in a day! It functions as I need it to and is a beautiful space to be in everyday."

__________

Crazy beautiful, right?  Liz took her time to create a cohesive and thought out space that she can now use with a smile.  Her hutch paired with her glass jars, decorative boxes and crates is about the most beautiful combination I have seen.  I am also smitten with her bookcase and all of her special touches throughout.  You can tell she gave each piece her special touch, and carefully considered each item she added.  A combination of old and new, everything she has done works in harmony to create a very peaceful place to work each day.

We live in a very fast paced world, and it is easy to just want everything done, right now!  I know that I am not the most patient person when it comes to living in chaos and half-finished spaces.  But take your time my friends.  It is always worth it in the end.

Liz shared her entire home office story as well as how she ultimately found her personal style, on her blog here.  I hope you have a full cup of coffee and some time on your hands, because once you hop over, you will want to stay awhile to enjoy a plethora of project inspiration.

24 "Wait-No-More" Organizing Challenge Reader Recap!

I can't believe how much fun I had taking over four different areas of our home and life during the last month.  I have to admit, it was nice to take a small kitchen break and shift my focus back to organizing and home management.  Taking the time to work on the areas that had fallen by the wayside was refreshing and invigorating, and the results of my efforts are being celebrated on a daily basis.  And when I say "being celebrated", I mean not only smiling each time I get into the car or walk into my closet space, but I also mean by eating oodles of homemade strawberry ice cream.  I keep telling myself that I earned it.

As a quick refresher, I spent four weeks challenging myself to take back the following areas:

I can't get enough of this stuff!  Errr, maybe I should say I can't get rid of enough stuff?!  Anyway, it has been so much fun to take on organizing projects around our home.  And even more fun to see what you all took on over the course of the challenge as well.  There were so many great link-ups sharing your organizing frustrations and solutions and inspiring before and after photos; I have never felt so warm and proud.  And thank you to everyone who may not have linked up or shared photos, but still chimed in with excited comments and quick challenge progress reports.  Many of you took on projects that have been lingering for far too long, and that means a lot of you are now feeling a bit lighter and brighter because of it.  It's time to celebrate those successes!

_____________

I know at times I take organizing to the extreme.  Labels, paint, decorative papers... It is adding those special touches that keeps me excited to tackle spaces around our home, and hopefully inspires others to do the same.  But that doesn't mean all organizing projects have to be overly thought out and decorative in order to be effective or make a big impact.  Most often times, the simple act of cleaning out a drawer and updating the dividers can make an immediate difference in your day.  Take Errolyn's fantastically organized utensil drawer for example (click over to her blog to check out the before).

(via)

The oh-so-darling Carolyn also reorganized one of her drawers with some stackable dividers she already had at home.

(via)

Some of you tackled drawers, others tackled big building projects.  And when I say big, I mean huge!  Although this new bookcase is still waiting for paint, I think it is absolutely incredible what was created in just a single weekend!

(via)

Some more building took place over at Heather's home.  How fantastic is this DIY craft caddy?  What I love most is the versatility of the piece.  And the fact it was made completely from scratch.

(via)

Heather's crazy cool skills didn't stop there.  She also shared a tutorial for a super snazzy DIY tie rack!

(via)

Sometimes you give a storage project a try, and you realize it just isn't cutting it.  So I say, "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again!" (Definitely one of my many blog mottos.)  Tina must have been listening, because she modified her previous shoe storage solution to be even more useful for her charming entryway.

(via)

If you are ready for a margarita (yum!), then you will appreciate Sharon's new patio bar cart!  I am not sure what I am lusting after more... The margarita, or the fabulous DIY outdoor storage solution she created.

(via)

Social media can be really awesome sometimes.  Especially when you are organizing and can instantly share your excitement with the world on Instagram!  Hooray for adding dish shelving to make plate and mug stacking easier!

(via)

I spy Fridge Coasters!  And awesome clear fridge bins!  And cheese sticks!  #bestillmyheart

(via)

Rosy also shared her tips for organizing the fridge and you guessed it!  Cheers to more clear fridge bins!

(via)

I have been wanting to file my frozen foods for quite some time now.  Thank you to Sandie for the great tutorial and the push that I needed to make this awesome process happen!

(via)

The refrigerator and under the sink are two of the hottest spots in the kitchen.  Another free and fabulous organizing project is officially in the books!

(via)

How about another great pantry before and after story?  And awesome labels?  Errolyn has both for you over on her blog.

(via)

Let's shift focus for a minute and talk about toys.  As you may already know, toys have the ability to spread like wild fire!  Because little hands play a part in that happening, Jessica offered her helpful tips for getting your kiddos involved with the toy organization and pick-up process.

(via)

The before photos of Erin's basement brought back so many memories of our own space prior to finishing it off years ago.  But she tackled that space with ambition and smarts and created one heck of an organized toy area for her kids to "shop" from at playtime!

(via)

When I first started blogging, I couldn't get enough labels, gift wrap and craft supplies.  Thinking about it, not much has changed.  Maybe that is why Kara's new craft closet gave me giant heart-shaped eyes.

(via)

I think it is typically fair to say that if you love where you work, you will put love into the work you do.  Cluttered desks and offices can leave you feeling cloudy and flustered.  Anima has created one of the happiest work spaces I have seen in a very long time.  I really love the painted cork pinboards above her desk.  The rest of the space is also filled with darling and creative crafts and DIY's.

(via)

Erin & Dan also tackled a beautiful office space.  Totally diggin' the walls and dresser and desk and chair and... OK, OK... I love it all!

(via)

If a clean desk can do wonders for your daily work, imagine what colorful paper storage can do for your daily filing?

(via)

What do you do while sitting at your desk?  Why work and pay bills of course!  Maggie kindly shared all of her tips for keeping her finances organized.  She also kindly shared a free printable!

(via)

Calling all washi tape fanatics, this next one is for you!  Haley proves to us that thread racks can take on roles rolls beyond organizing thread!

(via)

Along with craft spaces and offices, there were also a few entryways and drop zones that were revitalized.  I love the results of Emily's de-cluttering marathon.  Or declutterathon as she puts it!

(via)

After Samantha took care of storage for her family's shoes and keys, she went straight for the paper piles that always landed on her kitchen counter.

(via)

When it came to wardrobes and clothing, I saw a lot of posts dedicated to both the very popular KonMari and Capsule Wardrobe methods.

(via)

(via)

I also found a closet so organized that it made my heart race a marathon.

(via)

And basket labels that did the same!

(via)

And last but not least, a project that sparked me to organize right before I hop on a plane to Atlanta for the Haven Blog Conference this week...  Ashley's organized purse.  Thank you Ashley for the inspiration.  I dumped out my bag, sorted it down, compartmentalized things into pouches, and it now looks just as organized as yours.
