98 Kitchen Pantry Update: Part 1

Typical Jen fashion would be do cram 17 hours and 26 minutes of projects, blood, sweat and tears into one long winded post.  And although my pantry organizing and sprucing better not take me seventeen hours, or cause any blood and tears, I am not jamming this post with everything all at once.  I thought I would take a new approach this week, since it is kitchen challenge month and we are doing these projects together.

That's right, I am dedicating my whole week to cleaning out my food cupboard and pantry.  Because I am doing it in bite size steps in hopes of getting it done right and the way I have been envisioning it for awhile now.   And while most of our projects go on over the course of a few days, I typically smash all those days together with too many photos and not enough details, so this week, you are getting a true real life as we go update of the progress we have made so far, and the plans we have for tomorrow.

So who is ready to tackle their food cabinets and pantry with me!?  And let's make a drinking game out of the times I blush this week for accidentally typing panty vs. pantry.  It's already happened once this month.... game on!

Our pantry has been working fairly well over the years.  We organized it awhile back here and you caught an updated glimpse of it here.

Clearly winter is here and I am getting a good visual of why I have been gaining weight the last couple of months... we have been hoarding food!

Why yes, that is a pineapple in my pantry... why wouldn't there be?  The site of this gives me a case of the yuks.  We have almost all of the essential food storage we need, great containers and baskets.  It just comes down to using them, and even more so, putting them in places that make sense and keep things simple to access.  Our snacks live up high because I always figured that by placing them higher, we would be likely to snack less.  But that isn't necessarily the case, in fact, it causes my six year old to monkey his way up those shelves to grab one of his buried snack containers.  The other boys are constantly dragging our stools to the pantry to reach their snacky items.  When I occasionally purchase items on sale or in bulk, we have an overflow shelf, which has gotten a bit out of control.  And you wouldn't even see all the snacks nicely placed in their clear airtight storage, because there is a huge pineapple in front of them... sigh...  A lot of the systems we have work great, when we use them.  That's all it comes down to.  Sometimes we get busy and lazy and let our systems fail.  And sometimes they just don't make sense or are not easy enough to maintain.

Our other food cabinet was doing pretty well, since just some of the basics live there and all of our baskets were nicely labeled.  For the most part, everything has a designated place, and I am taking note that is why it is working!

So, the first step to any organizing or re-organizing project, is to empty everything out!

That is our table with everything removed from the cabinets, and it will probably remain that way for a couple of days.  At least now we can see what we have again!

At this point, I also vacuum along all the edges and wipe everything down with a clean rag.

There is a huge part of me begging myself to paint or do something with the inside of our cabinets.  But I am saving that for kitchen renovation day, so for now, they will stay boring.  Same with the pantry, being that we are planning a large scale renovation down the line, I don't want to invest in building pull out pantry drawers, which would make our lives sooooo much easier since our storage space is pretty deep.  But, I did want to finally take on those wire shelves.  Seriously, why wire?  They make absolutely zero sense to me.  Crumbs fall all the way to the floor, and even worse, drips and syrup and everything else is such a challenge to clean up between those itty bitty wire slats.  And don't even get me started on how certain things don't sit nicely on them and the proceed to tip over...

Rant over.

The fix was super simple, some foam board found in the craft section at most stores, even at some dollar stores!

We measured twice, cut once...

The foam board clearly wasn't going to be durable enough to handle multiple washings or scrubbing, should something spill.  And I worried it would quickly fall apart from things constantly being pulled in and out of the shelves.

Leftover drawer liner to the rescue!  I purchased a double roll pack awhile back and I have been using it for a few projects here and there, and knew it was the perfect cleanable solution to the foam boards.  I believe I found it at Marshalls or TJ Maxx for those wondering.

It applied super quick and easy to the foam, all bubbles were easily smoothed out.

Into the pantry they went!  So bright and pretty!

Once the boards were all cut down and the paper was applied to all, I realized that I would line the shelves of the over the door organizer as well.  Might as well go big or go home!

Squeal!  LOVE the happiness in going on behind the pantry door now!

We added in a small step stool {found at HomeGoods} that we can collapse down so we don't lose storage space, yet hopefully it will prevent climbing kiddos.

And as you may have seen in the past, we hang a clipboard on the door so I can keep my pantry inventory and shopping list easily accessible.

So now we are left with a blank slate after day one of removing all of the contents, lining the shelves and wiping everything down.

The next steps will be:
  • Update our pantry inventory sheet
  • Create a storage plan
  • Design labels
  • Put everything back where it makes the most sense for our fam
So stay tuned as a few of our kitchen hot spots get a little love and attention.  More play by play to come as the week goes on!

What kitchen project did you take on this weekend?  Any other wire shelf haters out there?  How about words you almost always type wrong?

  1. Wire shelf hater, right here. I've seen some ideas {through Pinterest} where people have used the self-sticking tiles, but it looks like your solution may be less expensive. And way prettier!!

  2. Omg yes! Who ever decided that wire shelving was good for items that like to tip over!

I love this solution partially because it is so cute, but mostly because even I can do it, with no power tool skills. Did you do the underside for the upper shelves?

I can't wait to see the rest!

    1. I thought about it, but I didn't because I wanted to make sure I had enough for the rest first. I still might, I will see once everything is put back in. For now, it still looks pretty with just the white showing through the bottom. :)

      xo!

    2. Only good thing about wire shelving is if you are storing pots and pans or at least the lids. The tops slip in the grooves and stay put! I think I will do the foam board to the rest of the shelves though. So pretty.

  3. I loathe wire shelves!!! All of the closets and shelf systems in our home are wire (they were when we moved in) so I am very frustrated. Wire makes sense in the garage or for seasonal storage but not for pantries and linen closets! I like your solution and make incorporate it myself.

  4. I love your idea of using foam board to put on top of wire shelves. They are so aggravating. I really need to start on my tupperware cabinet. #Motivation.

  5. We have wire shelves too, but I haven't covered them. Yet. I can't wait to see what you do with the rest! I recently reorganized with mine with all Tupperware containers. I am pleased!!

  7. FOAM BOARD!!! You are a genius! That's so pretty and still quick and easy and inexpensive. I think I just found my project for the coming weekend!

  8. It looks nice and fresh sofar. I'm curious about the rest of the changes you are about to make.

And wire shelves might be great for the storage of other things but certainly not for kitchen stuff.

  9. Love this! I hate our ugly wire shelves... I have already added this to my to-do list! Thanks!

  10. We have the sliding drawers, but things still get lost or we don't keep up on what we need. The clip board is a fantastic idea! Can't wait to see the rest because our pantry needs some help too. :-)

  11. So, so happy to see that the foam board works! I had thought of using that on my shelves, but I was worried about the same things you were. Contact paper to the rescue! Thanks, Jen!! I like the "real-time" posts. Makes everything seem a lot more realistic!

  12. Thank you for slowing this down and showing us step-by-step. It will be easier to follow in your footsteps if I don't have to think through how to get started. For some reason, it's very comforting to see your table piled with cabinet/pantry contents! I have had re-organizing my pantry and cabinets on the to-do list for some time. Now is not the time for me - but I will be marking this post to come back and use as a tutorial when I have a block of time to devote to it. I'm lucky enough to have a pantry with pull-out drawers, but have never adjusted their heights (requires a screwdriver and effort) for what makes sense for our family (e.g., putting cereal lower where the kids can reach it). Your ideas inspire!!! My day isn't complete without a stop at your blog, even if it's just to dream what I'll do when I have more time. - Adrienne from Palatine, IL

  15. Love what you've started, can't wait to see the rest. This weekend I cleaned out the fridge, wiped every shelf, nook, and cranny (ewww), and ordered my new fridge coasters. Can't wait to install. Also reorganized the fridge contents, and decided reluctantly to indulge in some labels inside the fridge. I can already hear some of my girlfriends' voices in my head teasing me, but what the heck. I love labels, my kids are little, and I think it helps when family members or babysitters help clean up and don't know where stuff goes. I'm doing it by golly.

I too love your foam board solution - I'll be keeping that in mind for lame wire shelving. And one comment about the pineapple! I think pineapples are one of the most beautiful fruits, and they remind me of Hawaii. I always store mine on the kitchen counter - I think of it like having fresh flowers. Love!

  16. I am excited to see this, because my pantry is just a little smaller than this. It makes me feel like what you do might be doable in mine!! We have the wire shelves too, which I HATE. I love the foam board idea. Our dollar store has it for $1 each. Can't wait to try this!!

  17. What a great idea for dealing with wire shelves! I was just posting about ours today - I HATE them!! Who ever decided that wire shelves would be good in a kitchen...grr. DH and I were talking yesterday about doing something with ours. He suggested covering them with wood planks, but your idea will be much cheaper (and cuter!). (:

  18. I really love this. They have really cute and cheap drawer liner's at Homesense right now to do this project! I'm inspired to go get some and do mine now! I would really love decorated liners for my fridge...

  19. Me and my husband have recently purchased our first home. Your projects are going to inspire so many of my own projects. I would have never thought to use foam board and liners! I love all of your ideas! SO creative

  20. Did my husband call you and tell you to do this now? He was just complaining about our pantry. I had organized it years ago, before kids, and now everything gets shoved in wherever it won't wall off a shelf. My 2 year old loves to play in there with the door closed. What is she doing in there? So that means anything in glass jars or breakable (including blocks of Velveeta cheese) need to be moved up higher. We can never find anything anymore and my solution lately has just been to buy it again at the store...

Fortunately we don't have the wire shelves, but they would drive me nuts.

Thanks for being an inspiration. I want to go home right now and pull everything out of the pantry...

I looked in the back of that issue for where you bought your over the door rack and it said it was made by 3M and is carried in some Home Depot stores. I can't find it anywhere! :(

  22. I am a wire shelf hater!! I recently put down trays and baskets to hold everything in my pantry. Not only are the shelves wire, but they were also poorly installed and barely handle the weight of pantry contents (renters... So we can't change them).

I LOVE the shelf liner and stool!! When we move, definitely searching for similar ones!! I love yellow and aqua!!

  23. The shelf liner is so bright and fun in there! Wire shelf hater here!! I have a corner pantry and the house came with that wire shelving. I hate cleaning it!!! No fun cleaning spills off of it. Crock pot feet slip through. I hate the lip on it, as it makes it a pain to take out tupperware containers that are stacked. I would love solid shelves. We have another closet in here that is going to be redone and has melamine shelves. I think the whole track system is coming out and going in the pantry. Those brackets are not cheap and neither are the track system they hang from. Money saved there for reusing it. :) Hubby likes this idea because it is adjustable and can be rearranged if need be.

  24. Thank you so much for sharing this idea! I have been battling a small hall closet/pantry about the size of yours and am constantly struggling with it. I have very little storage in my space and having to use that space for both a panty and for other storage is a challenge. I love you easy and inexpensive idea! I can't wait to try it! 58. "No More Wire Shelves" - with a little creative license from Mommie Dearest. I have this type of shelf in every closet and storage place in my house and other than being cheap to build with, are pretty useless.

I run a scrapbook kit club, so I have a seemingly endless supply of chipboard and the 12x12 size fits perfect on my shelves. Not near as cute as the covered foam core, but it doesn't cost me anything and I only use it where I store my cookbooks. Bags and baskets keep envelopes and such from sliding through.

This post - or series of posts - comes just in time. I was looking at my pantry over the weekend and it's a tad out of control and I was just thinking it needed some serious work. It'll be fun to see what you come up with that I might be able to adapt to my own. Unfortunately my pantry stores a lot more than just food - one side is dedicated to cookbooks, liquor and some small appliances. It needs some thought, so I'm hoping something you post sparks some inspiration.

    Thanks for the posts!

It's called "Self Adhesive Shelf Liner Sketched Yellow Floral". They also have a beautiful Aqua color available as well. Love the blog!

  66. Hi, Jen! I always love reading your blog. Tons of inspiration. Right now, I'm in the middle of reorganizing my front room, that is a dining room/extra furniture/office space. :) So right now, I have my dining table covered in old paperwork to file, scrap booking supplies, and other odds and ends. Being a full-time working mom and the mommy of three lovely monsters, I do not have a lot of time to actually "reorganize" anything. Even on the weekends, with Girl Scouts and just regular family functions. I started but have had no time to finish. Its actually embarrassing with friends and family coming over, and all I can say is, "I'm working on it." When I've been saying that for two weeks now. Any suggestions on how I can actually get back into that project, so I begin to feel some success. How do you handle big projects like that?
Sorry, I originally started this comment, to ask you where you purchased the ceiling tile you used to line your pantry walls :) Guess I needed to vent a little. Thanks for taking time to listen :) and reply. Have a great night!

    1. Aww, don't feel defeated! You are a full time mom with kids! Projects take time! I would just try to give yourself 15 minutes each night to work on it, no more. It will get done, and by leaving it out, you are reminding yourself to tackle it each day. I use to worry about having unfinished projects out, but sometimes it is the nature of the beast. Friends and family should be excited for you and your projects and process and that you are working on finding some order and organizing. You shouldn't feel embarrassed at all. If it really is a thorn in your side, maybe you could tuck it in a temporary bin to work from when the time permits.

I found the ceiling tiles from Home Depot a few years ago, but I think they still sell them.

      Best wishes darlin!

      xo,

My pantry have plain white shelfs. I live in a town home, just renting could that be done with out to much cost and effort? Thanks for your great ideas... Valerie (jay.n.valerie@gmail.com)

    1. Hi Valerie!

I believe the wire shelves are actually a bit pricey, but I do know they sell them at most local home improvement stores.

  69. Jen:

I've been laying in bed thinking about your foam core shelf covers and want to do the same! This is why I can't sleep! Question for you - how did you prevent your foam core from sliding around on the shelves or does the weight of the items prevent them from slipping?

Love your blog! It's always very inspiring!

    1. Hi Christine!

We have a small lip on each side of the door, that prevents our foam from moving at all. Plus, the weight of the items seems to prevent it as well. You could always use a small bit of mounting putty to prevent the sliding as well.
