53 Hooked on Hooks!

I think I have put hooks up in almost every room in our home.  Entry off of the garage?  Check.  Main entry?  Check.  Bathroom?  Check.  Kid's bedroom?  Check again!

I have been majorly lovin' on the rail of hooks we installed in the boy's shared bedroom.  They are the perfect place for us to hang their overnight bag when packing it, put out long sleeved sweaters for chilly days and even hang their p.j.'s in-between wears.

First, we attempted to be resourceful and installed a rail of hooks from when my oldest was a wee one, and it was much too small and not at all effective...

Sometimes bigger is just better.  What we had initially just was not at all substantial and looked a bit funny on the wall when the door was closed.  The hook system didn't make much sense because the knobs were so close together, you really could only comfortably hang one or two things, even though there were four hooks.

Mark this down as one of those super-speedy-super-awesome DIY projects.  And unfortunately, you are just going to have to trust me on that, as this smart and oh-so-organized girl {enter sarcasm here}, managed to misplace all of the photos I took of the install process.  I searched for over two hours this morning and I had to finally throw up my hands and be OK that sometimes words just have to be enough.  Of course I will update the post the day I find those pesky pics, I am sure I will stumble on them in some random folder three years from now, although, I did have fun getting sucked down memory lane while I searched endlessly on my external hard drive this morning.  Rant over.

Back to the rail of hooks install process...

Step 1:  Measure desired space.

Step 2:  Purchase rail board.  We went with a board that was 6" wide and already primed, found at Home Depot.

Step 3:  Using a brad nailer to affix the board to the wall, my hubby tried his best to hit studs.  We installed the board 34" from the floor, we wanted it to be tall enough so clothing wouldn't touch the floor, but short enough for the kids to easily access.

Step 4:  Fill nail holes with caulk.

Step 5:  Paint.

Step 6:  Once paint is dry, install hooks {I found the hooks at Home Depot}.  We spaced them evenly and just screwed them right into the wood board.  The wood gave the hooks the strength needed to hold a decent amount of weight.

I am over the moon happy about how simple and quick the project was, and how well it utilized the space behind the door.

The kids have a bit of a traveling/airplane theme going on...

So I ordered these awesome prints from the Honey & Fitz Etsy shop

They fit the room like a glove, and I adore listening to my boys chat airplanes.

I am so smitten with the impact and the ease of this project.  A round of applause to hooks for being simply awesome.

Aside from hooks, I am currently hooked on Instagram, sunshine, fresh flowers, bad reality television, my morning cup of coffee, touches of gold, my fam and Essie nail polish color turquoise & caicos.  How about you, anything you are hooked on that we should know about?

  2. i am hooked on hooks too! We just got rid of our towel bars, replaced them with hooks... i have hooks in all my kids rooms, inside cabinets, inside our coat closet for the cherubs coats, in the back hall, hooks for the mops, behind the doors for robes...etc... etc.. and those are only the ones that were installed recently. :-) lovin' it!

    1. We did the same, replacing the towel bar with hooks. So much easier for the kids and no worrying about keeping the towels folded and hanging neatly. :)

    1. Yes! That is the perfect spot for hooks! I much prefer them in the bath over a towel bar! :)

  4. Another hook fan here! Can never have enough with kids and pets! I had my hubby create the same set up that you just shared and I hung it by our entry - the goal is to have my boys come home from school and they each have a hook to hang their coat and backpack, then in the kitchen I have more hooks so they can hang up their reusable lunch sacks! Works great :)

Love the stripes and your boys' room!

  5. I need more hooks in my life. I like to put up a command hook to see if I like a spot before I start drilling and making it permanant. Problem is I usually never get around to hanging the 'real' hooks. :)

Your boys room is awesome! I love the walls and the red bedding. Such a crisp look.

    1. Thank you! And that's a great tip to use Command Hooks first, I am guessing your walls are thankful for that! :)

  7. I just hung some over the door hooks in our master, thinking it was perfect for my robe. Little did I know it'd solve the pesky problem of my husband's ties. We've tried three other solutions that just didn't work. I'd still find his ties on the door knob. Now they're in the open, so he can easily choose and easily put them away.

    1. Great idea for ties! We roll my hubbies in sock holders in our drawer, but I haven't been the biggest fan of that and they don't always make it back neatly. Hooks! I am on it! :)

  14. Do your boys ever open the door into the wall, therefore making a "hook mark" into the back of the door? Or do you have a door stop that sticks out further than the hook that stops it first?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Nope, lucky for us we haven't had any problem with it, but usually there is something hanging on the only hook that the door comes close to, so it's always buffered it. But a door stop would also completely prevent any worries down the line too.

  15. Jen, thanks for the link for the airplane pics. I think that will be our next theme once my sweet 6 yr old out grows his dinos. He is obsessed with planes.

I am installing hooks like that in our laundry, as soon as we get the board and batten up. I have some old hooks similar to that that my father had given me. They're antique brass now, but will be spray painted ORB.

Right now, hooked on the color teal. Definitely sunshine... how about that weather today!!! Finally hit above 60! My can of Coke each day and peanut butter toast. :)

  17. I love hooks too. I actually used them to hang my curtains in my family room. I have curtains with tabs and they hang on old coat hooks. I love it.

  20. I just got that nail polish last week and am loving it! Glad to hear I'm not the only one. My hubby thought it was a bit young for me. So what if I'm not in my 20's anymore...I can still have fun with my nailpolish.
Love the boys room by the way. My two boys have to share a room and I am always looking for great ideas for shared spaces. Great stuff!

  21. Hi, love all your posts, so inspiring! I've got an airplane theme going for my youngest right now, and something like that hanging red airplane would be just perfect to complete his room! Could you please share where you found it? Thank you!! :)

    1. Thank you!

I found it a few years ago on clearance from Pottery Barn Kids. They seem to rotate airplane themed items in and out quite a bit, so if you wait long enough, I am guessing you could find something on sale as well!

  23. That is exactly how I did the hooks in my children's bathroom and in the laundry room/mudroom. The laundry room has ten hooks along one wall. I just love looking at them all when I go in thee. With 6 in our family even 10 isn't enough! Love your boys room.

  24. so cute! and I'm a hook addict too. Hooks in every room, on every door, beside every door, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, in the bedroom... hooks are my friends!!

  25. We just recently hung similar hooks in our bathroom for towels. Everybody in our family of six now has a double hook for their towels (which means my stepdaughters and I each have a hook for a towel for body and hair). Space saved, no more towels tossed over my shower curtain rod, and none falling on the floor either--a win all around for our (somewhat tiny) bathroom!

  26. Yep- those prints are PERFECT!!! Also, I showed off your blog to my design class the other day! My teacher is now obsessed :)

  27. Thanks for the nail polish recommendation. Bought some for mother's day gifts! Hooked on any type of storage bin or container, my morning coffee with my new found love of sugar free caramel syrup, and twizzler bites, and of course this blog!

  28. Hey Jen,
I'm too hooked on Instagram, fresh flowers and sunshine. Spring couldn't come fast enough for us around here. Turquoise and Caicos is a beautiful shade of polish. The hooks you installed are awesome. Tomorrow I'm starting my master bath redo and I'm thinking decorative shelf with hooks instead of a towel bar. I'll keep ya posted as to how that turns out.

  30. Besides the fact that I love your post (as I do pretty much every one you do), I swooned when you said you loved, "turquoise & caicos" Essie polish. I gave the color to my daughter's teacher at Christmas but wished I had kept it for myself even though I *never* wear nail polish, and I spent the rest of the winter and spring looking for it...I *still* want it so I think it's time to splurge on an on-line purchase of it!!

  31. i am also hooked on that nail polish...love the airplane theme. thinking of something like that for my little man.

  32. Hi there, great idea! Can you explain step #4? What holes are you filling with caulking??

    1. Hi Nyrene!

When we used the brad nailer to nail the board into the wall, it left small holes that needed to be filled prior to painting.
