150 June Monthly Challenge: We Painted the Front Door!

I am taking this challenge pretty seriously this month!  It's on like donkey kong!

For those wondering what I am talking about, this month I challenged myself {and y'all}, to take back my outdoor spaces.  They have been feeling neglected this past couple of years and also feeling the pain of our six month winter season.

First up, the front door!

I wanted to start with a project that would have a nice, quick impact.  Something to really set the tone and the mood for the rest of the projects I want to tackle.  The front door has been a topic of conversation for a couple of years now, so it was finally time to do something about it!

White and gray and white and gray.  A little dash of black and some more white and gray.  That is the story of the front exterior.  But not the story of our colorful family.  It was time to bring in something a little more bold and happy.

Late last year I had painted some wooden planters a pretty light sea blue.  I looooved the color but ultimately decided it was a bit too light for the front door.  So, we held up oodles of swatches from a few of my paint decks, I chatted about yellows, blues and greens, but the hubby wanted to stick with a shade of blue, or nothing at all.  He was a little worried about adding color to the door, so something simple and a color that we tend to use frequently in our other decor was a must and the compromise to gettin' things done.

I ultimately decided on Behr's Harbor.  It is a pretty deep teally blue with a little bit of gray undertone.

Just like painting a wall, it's really hard to know what a color will look like on a large surface, when just looking at a small swatch from a book.  But, I stared and stared at it and stared some more, looking at it from different angles and light, and ultimately knew it was the right color for us.  I couldn't wait to get started!

The first step was to wipe down the door with a soft rag, to remove dust and dirt and grime.

I also removed the door handle and washed away the rings of dirt.  Gross.

I had read a couple of tutorials that you should get your door ready for paint with a liquid deglosser, so that is just what I did.

I just applied it as directed, on a rag and in circular motions over the entire door.  One coat later and I read the back of the bottle for dry time, and saw that it wasn't intended for fiberglass doors.  Gee, Jen.  Read those things first!  Moving on.

So, I decided to dive right in with the painting.  For the door, I went with an exterior paint and primer in one paint.  I figured this would help the paint adhere better and also require a few less coats.

I used a super smooth roller for cabinets and doors to roll the paint onto the door.

And one coat later, I had really great coverage!!  I used a soft angled brush to get into the grooves of the door.

I let the door open and drying for about an hour.  It was a cooler day with a nice breeze, so it dried nice and quickly.

Second coat went on...

And after the third, it was time to start pulling tape!

When I stood in the front yard and looked at the door, I didn't love the white trim.  It didn't feel cohesive or like it made sense.  I googled a bunch of painted front doors and it appeared that majority of folks painted the window trim the same color as the door.  I liked that look better.  So I taped it off and painted the trim quick too.

I was really happy with how nice and smooth it turned out.  I was a bit terrified we would have something blotchy or with brush strokes, which was part of the reason it took me so long to just do it already, but the roller and paint combo worked wonderful!

I have to say, I really love it!

The planters stayed the same color for now, but I have a bunch of other front yard projects up my sleeve, and they might get a little treatment to add a little more interest.

The blue is a nice match with the gray.  It's bold enough for me, to make a difference and to add a little drama to the house, but subtle enough for the hubby who didn't want anything too crazy and out of place for our neighborhood.

Painting the door went really quick.  About 15-20 minutes to wash it down, remove the handles and add the unnecessary deglosser.  Another 15 for the first coat, and each following, with an hour wait in-between.  And done!  We have a great start to our outdoor projects this month!  Now for the super fab before and after of the quick update!

I only painted the front of the door, the back is still white, but I might just leave it wide open all the time, because I really love the color it adds to the entry too!

OK friends!  Wish us luck for more progress this weekend and beg the rain gods to let up for a couple of days so I have some content next week.  Ha!

Let's chat front doors!  Have you taken the plunge to paint yours, and what color did you go with?  What other ways have you added a little love and personality to the entry of your home?

  9. It must be that time of year. The hubby and I just tackled some of our outdoor projects (we have a long list, as the house and yard were neglected for years). We pulled out some dead bushes/plants or ones that I didn't want anymore, laid mulch, added some planters to the front steps and by the garage. I also painted my front door a dark gray color to compliment the blue house and white trim (and the new paint job that the house will hopefully get next year). I think when you live in MN and winter dragged on FOREVER, you have to do a lot in a short amount of time.

  10. We haven't moved in yet, but this post really got me thinking about what color to paint the front door of our new house! Our brick is pretty monotone red, and I am thinking a black door and adding black shutters to the outside windows. But who knows...maybe I will play with some more color now.

  13. We live in an old family farmhouse...which is need of a huge makeover/renovation. But until we can afford it, I've been consistenly inspired by your posts to make what I've got look as good as I can! This spring we spruced up the entrance to our home by removing a very old overgrown tree, trimming some old bushes, hanging a hummingbird feeder, and planting some colourful flowers.

    1. Kudos! Sometimes it's those tasks that make the most impact! We have some overgrown bushes too, and although it doesn't sound too fun to deal with them, I know just clipping them back will help so much! And the thought of an old family farmhouse is magical!

  14. I think the door itself looks amazing but I'm bummed your husband wouldn't let you do a different color. I was really hoping you'd do yellow... yellow and gray are just so amazing together IMHO. Oh well, this is still a fantastic change and it looks much, much better.

    1. I am far from bummed about the final choice, I am so super smitten! I do love me some yellow and gray, but there are SO many yellow doors out there, that it was fun to do something a smidge different. I will definitely be bringing some yellow into the backyard updates, even if just through some small accessories.

  15. What a great colour! We had a dark green front door until quite recently when I decided I wanted it a nice pale sage green kind of colour. My husband painted it and.....I don't like it...eeek! It looks more grey than green and not a pleasant grey...more like an undercoat. Haven't had the heart to tell him I don't like it yet ;)

  27. We live in a neighborhood with a HOA, so our choices of colors are REALLY limited (like jump through a bunch of hoops to get one of perhaps 5 color combo choices, if you plan to change what's existing).

But, we recently did some painting on our rental property. I was considering painting the front door red or navy blue...but wound up with (boring) white to appeal to more potential tenants. I did, however paint the ceiling of the front porch a sky blue - haint blue. Love it!

    3. We splurged and had a custom made storm door put on our house... We have a circle top front door, so custom was the only way to go!
It is so nice. We have a south facing house, so even on the warmer winter days when the sun is shining, we can open the entry door and let the light in without the cold getting in. It's also nice in the summer when the a/c is on to have the door open. Get one, you won't regret it.

  29. I love that color! We've discussed painting our door for awhile now, my only issue is trying to find just the right color to go with the brown of our house... Typing it now sounds silly because brown is a neutral color and pretty much anything could go with it; but the brown we have is difficult to find the right color (in my opinion). However, now that we found out my husband will be stationed here for another 2-ish years (minimum) we've decided we're going to finally get started with more household projects (like laminate-wood flooring, finally painting the bathrooms... and painting the door?). We'll see...

  33. Looks amazing! I think that we might have the same door....keepu s posted on how it holds up because after our cold Canadian winter last year the trim shrunk (or something)and has pulled away from the door to expose the white underneath. WHAT! your probably fine though because it's a lighter colour.

  64. Hey Jen, lovely color choice! We have a medium gray house and our doors are burgundy. In case your window trim does pull back away from the door in the winter (like mine has - it is due to the heat/cold), your window can be removed by the inside by popping out those little circles out and accessing the screws. You can then paint out the opening. I recently replaced the window in our front door and I was always worried it would be a big job. I was so amazed by how easy it was to do that I even took the plunge and cut a hole in our fiberglass door to the garage and put in a window insert bought at HD - wish I had done it sooner as it brings in so much more natural light!

  81. I'm so excited to see you painted a door with a glass insert! We're looking at painting our house in the next few years but we recently built a woodshop in the backyard for the hubs (I'm reclaiming our garage!) and so we need to pick the new house color now so we can paint the shop. We live in Anchorage, Alaska and all the house are a drap shade of gray or some combination of that. I want color but I'm not sure I want the entire house teal - so I've been leaning towards just the door. But whenever I see painted doors in magazines, they are always solid doors, not doors with glass. I'm thrilled to see yours with glass and how lovely it turned out! Excellent project!!! I'm definitely taking back our outdoor space this summer! Keep up the excellent blogging!

  82. Love those light blue planters! Super cute!

  83. Looks great! I did ours last fall - a happy grass green color - and love it! We have beige siding and black shutters and the pop of bright green just makes me so happy. FYI, we have a full glass storm door so the green shines right through. The metal around the storm is all white to match the other door and window trim so I think it would look great if you decide to add one.

  85. I love your door in this blue! I finally got around to reading the details of your post & realized that you used the exact same blue that I used on a recent bench I painted. I just LOVE this color. It really looks great with the lighter blue planters too.

  86. I've been wanting to paint my front door for a year, since we bought the house. My husband was out of town this past weekend, so I pulled the trigger. I brought home a lot of samples, all in the blue/teal/gray family (our house is a creamy white and inside is lots of gray tones). The crazy thing is - I ended up picking Harbor by Behr as well! How insane and random, when you consider the 100s of options. I love that I can now say to people, "The house with the blue door" and they will immediately know what I'm talking about! Looks great!

  87. I've been wanting to paint our front door and your tutorial is encouraging -- I'm just nervous about putting the lock back on the door. Can you post about that process? Please :-)

  88. Looks really great! What color are your shutters? It's hard to tell in the pic!

  89. I just painted my door almost the exact same, except it was Agave from Behr Premium, but looks very similar to your pictures. I think most people just choose red, but we have white siding with red brick and I wanted something to compliment, not match. The greenish blue was perfect.

  90. I love this little area you have! We have a balcony that looks like a similar depth with a wood railing that looks like yours. I haven't done anything with it because I never thought it was deep enough, but what you have done is making me rethink my choice! How deep is it from the wall to the railing?

    1. Hi there!

The depth from the house to the railing is about 3 1/2 feet. Four feet wide where there is no railing. :)

      Hope that helps you out!

  92. Jen, how long did it take the door to dry entirely?

    ReplyDelete

    1. It only took 2-3 hours to dry enough for us to close the door. However, I painted it in about 70ish degree weather, and there was also a good breeze. We were really gentle with it the first day, but after that, it has gone through the normal wear and tear of a family of five and has held up wonderfully!

    2. Thanks! I am about to paint our front and back doors and I can't figure out what days I can do it so that I can be there at the house while the door is open drying! It's been in the 80s and 90s here in Jersey, but this week we're having some afternoon showers!

  93. Can you tell me where the light by your front door is from? Home Depot? Lowes? Need new lights, on some of the same outdoor projects as you have been and love these posts. Oh, just restaining our deck....and painting the front door is on my list, love that color and may try it!

  98. That IS fabulous! Thanks for the inspiration. We're currently in a ranch that (for some reason) doesn't have a front door (only side and rear). Looking to switch the floorplan a bit to accommodate adding a door...and you just helped me figure out what kind of look to go for! Thank you!

  101. Really great tips for painting!

Do you know what the old color of the door is?
Also do you know the grey color the house is painted?

Would really appreciate it, I really like them!

    1. Hi Angela,

The old door color was "dirty", lol. Really, it was just a white that had discolored over time. The gray siding was a stock siding we selected when we built 14 years ago, so I am not sure what color or manufacturer that it is any longer. I am sorry I don't have more details to share.

      Thank you!
