110 Our New-To-Us Painted Dining Room Hutch - The REVEAL!

First, thank you SO much for the super kind comments on our little {ok BIG} hutch painting project I shared yesterday.  We really love it and your sweetness filled my heart.  Smooches to you all!

Today, you get to see it all filled up and finished.  I didn't think I could love it more, but now that it is done and living up to this huge expectation I had of it, I am beyond smitten.  We get to host Thanksgiving this year, and now I am counting the days because this new piece of furniture is the perfect addition to our party {and dining room}.

Majority of the items on the shelves and behind the sliding glass doors, were things we had previously stored in cupboards in our kitchen or within our previous sideboard.  I did spring for a couple of new joyful glasses from Target... more on those beauties in a bit.

The shelves within the main opening of the hutch hold our glasses, decanters, mixers and bar tools.  The pictures speak a million more words than I need to type, so here are a few closeups of the prettiness.

You see that charming little wooden box below the wine glasses?  It was one of those unfinished wooden boxes from the craft store....

I stained it, hot glued a pretty button to the front, lined it with felt and added some lettering inside the lid.  It is now the most fabulous storage for our bar tools.

The side shelves are perfect for storing our cookbooks and meal planning binders.

And those oh-so-festive glasses from Target I mentioned earlier.  Aren't they fun?

It is always nice when you can store all of your entertaining items in one place.  The lovely, decorative items live above and the less than beautiful items are stashed below.

The opening in the bottom was designed to hold wine bottles.  We like to keep a couple on hand for those unexpected special occasions... You know, those days when you accomplish something that you have been working towards for a very long time?  Or when someone stops by with really exciting news?  Or the time you get invited to a last minute dinner party?  It's always nice to be prepared I say.  And because we didn't need all of the wine slots, the extra openings hold our oversized chargers and some rolled table runners.

The cabinet to the left is where the magical happiness takes place as it holds all of our party supplies!

Everything from utensils to ice cream cups to paper straws and party hats.  Many of these items previously lived in a bin under our stairs {what?} and now they are right where they are meant to be.

The other cabinet holds all of the outdoor dining items that we removed from a cabinet in the kitchen when we created our lunch making station.

The drawer was the perfect solution for our cloth napkins and candles.

And that about completes the cabinet tour!

Here is my favorite view, gazing at it from across the way in the kitchen.... good thing my hubster is in charge of cooking most nights!  I wouldn't get anything accomplished and the kids would be eating burnt noodles.

Although I completely adored our previous sideboard paired with the floating shelf, it always felt as though the tall wall needed to be more functional, and it also needed a bit more color.  It also feels great to have all of our entertaining essentials in one space now as before they lived in random areas all over our home.  I think our mission has now been accomplished.

And now for the jaw dropping side by side of the Craigslisted hutch before paint and after....

Transformations like this always amaze me in the best of ways.  Essentially all we did is paint the new-to-us hutch and adjoining wall, and it feels like we moved into a whole new happier home!  I think this project did the trick in holding me over until the rest of the kitchen renovation comes along!  But it also made me even more excited!

* Hutch color is Sherwin Williams Reflecting Pool

  6. Hey Jen, wanted to make one suggestion to your cabinet should your friends/company have little ones under 4 years old. If you have a lot of friends with wild little ones that you have over often have all your glassware on the inside (where you've already added hardware for the wine glasses) that way when that particular set of people come over its an easy slide of the doors so nothing gets broke.

If you dont have many friends/dont have friends with kids that age over often I think you can decorate however with breakables everywhere ;)

    Looks good, as always!

  7. This is almost too much prettiness to handle in one place. :) Great job, and makes me feel slightly less guilty that I _may_ have just updated my kitchen wall with a sideboard, IKEA shelf with Amazon wine glass holders underneath, and poster board starburst mirror. 16. I painted a free (ugly) hutch/buffet last summer, I think I used the same color. I painted the inside and replaced the back with a sheet of bead board. I love it. Mine has lighting inside, which I replaced with LED lighting (it doesnt' get so hot) and I replaced the shelves with glass shelves. The light doesnt' get through to the bottom when they are solid. and I truly LOVE to see my work all lit up and beautiful. You can see it out in front on the sidewalk when our front door is open. Love that!
You will love it! It is really beautiful!

  23. Looks amazing. I would never choose to paint furniture a color, but after seeing this, I'm going to have to reconsider...

Question - how do you keep the paint from scratching or chipping? That may have been in the previous post on how you painted it. I didn't read every word. Please don't be mad at me :-)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Courtney!

There are a couple of things you can do to protect your painted furniture. You can use a wax finish or my favorite is Minwax Water-Based Polycrylic. Another option is to let the paint fully cure as over time it becomes harder and more chip resistant, however, that process can take up to 6 months. For this piece, I didn't do either because the exterior was done with a special chip resistant enamel furniture paint from Sherwin Williams {which I fell head over heals in love with}, and the shelves we pre-finished melamine board.

Hope that helps a bit! xoxo!

    2. I'm interested in the paint as well... it is oil-based? Is it safe to use indoors? Did you have to wear a special mask? I love how it turned out! The white insides really make it pop. Great job! :)

I am inspired to paint aomething (anything) after reading this post.
I have a question though, as a mum of young boys myself, I wondered about the alcohol within reach of children and if the cupboards slid over with a latch out of reach? It wouldn't be fair to trust my four year old not to "taste" something at his height, wondered how you tackled it with your brood?

    1. Good question! Glad you took a moment to comment!

First, I will say, that I rarely chat parenting on this blog because I personally believe that no two moms are the same or have the same beliefs and that we all need to make the best choices for our own personal families.

The alcohol that we do store on this hutch is all completely sealed {the wine below and the few cans of champagne above}. The decanters have distilled water in them for decorative purposes only, all of our open bottles are actually stored up high behind closed doors in our kitchen, and only come out when we are entertaining.

      xoxo!

  44. Jen, you did a beautiful job on the hutch. The color is lovely. You might want to experiment with adding decorative paper or fabric on the back walls at some point. I know you can add either to some type of backing cut down to fit or other creative method that isn't necessarily permanent...something you can change with the season or when you feel like a change. You know items stored in there will pop with a colorful contrast. I can just picture it. Again, wonderful job with the paint/finish. Looks great where you have it.
