60 You Asked: Where Do I Begin?

January is generally the month to get organized, and many people are on a quest this year to do just that.  Although I share a lot about the projects I take on, both big and small, sometimes I gloss over the thought process of getting started and just provide a brief introduction.  But it is a question I receive every. single. day.  And the question comes in many different forms:  How do you suggest getting started?  Where does one begin?  I have so much to organize, it is overwhelming!  How do I determine what to work on?  How do I know what to get rid of?

After writing about organizing for four years now, I have come to realize that every person is different when it comes to organizing.  For some it is easy to be ruthless, others have a hard time letting go.  Some can knock out a closet or room in a day or two; others take weeks, even months.  Some think it is fun to sift and sort: others would rather chew their own arm off than tackle a messy drawer.  So knowing that no two people, two homes or two situations are the same, there really may be no right answer to this question.  So just know, I am no professional and I do not have the key to turn organizing into Disneyland, but I can share a little of how I work through those feelings and questions personally.

I organize in two ways and it always comes down to the magnitude of the situation.  First, the quick easy way.

I get frustrated.  Those frustrations turn me into a "go getter" and I take on that problem right then and there.

A lot of the smaller projects I do and share come on in an instant, with very little pre-planning or thought process.  Typically it is something that slowed me down or caused me to turn red hot.  I make a decision in that moment to do something about it so it doesn't happen again.  This could be something like sifting through our entryway drawer or not being able to find a lid for a container in our food storage cabinet.

Without a second to over-think things, that drawer would be emptied on the kitchen table and I would start to sort, purge and put things back.  Some of you may be surprised at how often my organizing projects start out that way, but I would say about 70-80%.  I dig deep into that frustration and just get things done.  Typically these projects take me less than 15 minutes, unless I decide to turn it into a craft party, and then I move on with my day.  I don't do this every day, I don't worry if I have the time, I don't make a checklist or put it on my to-do list.  If I decide that I need storage while working on it, I still go through the steps of cleaning it out, purging and putting things back the best I can, and add the type of storage I need to my shopping list to grab next time I make a trip to town.  My first tip is to not over-complicate it.  In the words of Nike, "Just Do It!"

Tip number two, turn it into a hobby.  OK, so when you are filling out your resume or Facebook profile, and it asks you to list your hobbies, I am guessing that "organizing" won't make the cut.  But think about the things that do make the cut and do what you can to apply those tasks that you enjoy, to organizing.  For me, I seek the thrill of the orderly after effect, but I have also make it fun by integrating a lot of what I love into every project I do.  I love photography, I love to blog, I love to decorate and I love to paint and craft.  So instead of looking at an organizing task as daunting, I find a way to make it exciting.  I take photos of the before and after process.  I write about it.  I paint the inside of a closet or craft a pretty label.  I cover cereal boxes with paper or boxes with fabric.  Sometimes I have so much fun with everything else that I am doing, that I don't even realize that I am organizing.  There is no way it could possibly be that much fun could it?

Once I have taken the time to make something pretty or put a little effort into DIY'ing storage, I am more ruthless about what makes the cut going back into the space.  It makes it easier to let go of the things causing junk build-up and clutter, and only keeping the things I truly love and need.

You may not have the same hobbies that I do, but do you love to read?  Listen to your favorite book on tape while you sift through your t-shirt drawer.  Do you love to watch old movies?  Put on a marathon and sort through your paper piles.  Not every hobby can be turned into an organizing fest... If I could figure out how to integrate video games into organizing projects, we would get twice as much done around here.  But hopefully you can find a way to integrate something you enjoy into the process.

Tip number three is to find inspiration.  It is everywhere!  I can't begin to tell you how much motivation I find to tackle my own projects after I read a good magazine, browse a few blogs or Pinterest, or even after I visit a friend's home.  Even watching movies, I find myself more interested in the home interiors than the movie itself.  And before the movie is over, I am probably knee deep in a project.  Someone please tell me I am not the only one who does this.  Hello?

Not the impulsive type?  Do you have the need to plan every last aspect of a project?  Do you feel like your need to organize goes beyond quick daily fixes?  The next way to get started is for the "planners".  Time to get out your notebook.

But first, a little brutal honesty.  If you are looking to get your life and daily routine organized, it will not happen overnight.   It will not happen in a week.  Or even a month.  It is continuously on going.  Life changes, people change, routines change.  And when those things change, so do the way your systems work.  You won't get your solutions right the first time, every time.  Give something a whirl, evaluate it for a while, and revisit it.  It is OK; it happens to us all, even the professionals.  I don't want you to get started and instantly become frustrated when things are not moving as fast as you hoped, or when things don't work exactly as you planned.    What works for me, may not work for you.  It is important to go into things with a very open mind, a flexible attitude, and an understanding that it is OK to take your time.

So where to begin?  I always recommend to take a notepad and carry it with you for one sun-up to sun-down day.  Select a weekday that best reflects your routine and throughout the day, jot down notes.  Write down everything that you love about your day and is already working really well, as well as everything that slows you down and causes you to become frustrated.  Maybe you have your morning routine down because you plan ahead in the evenings, but have paper piles on your counter that don't allow you to get your bills paid on time.  Maybe your kids are constantly looking for their mittens in the morning before getting on the bus, but you always have dinner planned.  It is just as important to focus and high-five yourself for the things you are doing right, as it is to acknowledge and plan for the things that are causing hiccups.

Prioritize.  Once you have your list, take time to rank each item in the "needs improvement" category.  Think about what is costing you the most in the departments of time, money and sanity.

Example:  Not having a meal plan may be costing you money on your grocery bill.  Not being able to find a bill and pay it on time may cause a late fee, thus costing you more money.  Not having a hat & mitten basket by the door may cost you time searching for outerwear in the morning.  Not being able to use your kitchen counters to cook meals because they are too cluttered or find clothes to wear because they are all in a dirty pile in the laundry room, may cost you your sanity.

By ranking the items with a 1 being most important and 10 being least, you can quickly see where it is most beneficial to start and place your immediate efforts.  Ignore the storage room, ignore the playroom, ignore under the bed.  Those items come later.  Focus first on the important day-to-day routine items.  Once you have a better grip on your day, you can then focus on the other spaces.

Set a goal!  Once you know the first area you plan on tackling, take that pad of paper back out and write down a few things.
  1. The name of the project.
  2. A realistic completion date for the project.
  3. A quick summary of WHY the project is important {this step is very crucial in keeping you motivated}.  Simple keywords work great such as "More time with my kids", "Less stressful mornings", "Money savings".
  4. Any resources you need to complete the project.  Think of things such as time, care for the kids, potential storage needs.
  5. Reward.  Whether it is the same item that is behind the WHY of the project, or something special you have been saving up for or a date night with your hubby.  Select something to strive towards and to reward yourself for your awesomeness.
Sounds to me like you want a free printable?  Well sure then!

Now back to the same slogan from earlier, "Just Do It!"

You have done all you can.  You have assessed, you have made your list and you have prioritized.  You have even filled out your worksheet to pinned it up on your fridge as a daily reminder of your goal.  Now all that is left is digging in.  Feel free to revert back to the first few tips about getting frustrated, finding inspiration and turning it into a hobby.

The rest really is all about the heart of the project:
  1. Empty the contents of the drawer, closet or space.  I always love to start with a fresh, clean slate and perspective.
  2. Sort the contents into piles.  Place things back where they make the most sense.  Only keep things that belong in the space you are focusing on.  Give yourself a bin for Keep, Donate & Toss.
  3. Purge.  It is time to say goodbye to clutter and start simplifying and living with less.  You must be ruthless.  Question every item you touch.  "When did I use it last?  Do I really need this?  Is this something that I could be OK without?  Is there a sentimental reason why I am keeping this and if so, can I take a photo or scan it in without holding on to the physical piece?  Is the item torn or broken?  Will I ever really fix it if it is?"  Remember, the more you have to store, the more storage you need.  And storage can be expensive whether it comes in the form of an entire room or a single drawer divider.  And these things you are sorting, ultimately cost time and money.  Time sifting through more things.  Time cleaning and maintaining more things.  Money storing those things.  Money re-purchasing things we already have.  If all else fails, focus on the good feeling deep inside that you have when you hand over a bin of items to donate.  Nothing compares to giving back.
  4. Store it!  Time to take note of what remains and create or purchase proper storage.  Make sure to take measurements and think about ways to prevent the problem from arising again in the future.  The goal is to create simple systems which are easy to maintain, not to be perfect.
  5. Celebrate.  You are done and it is time to claim that reward!  And hopefully feel inspired and motivated to tackle that next item on your list head on!  It is OK to find yourself opening that drawer or gazing endlessly at the project you have just completed.  I catch myself doing that all of the time.  It is thrilling and rewarding and invigorating to see your hard work in action!

So although the answer is not a simple one word response, hopefully this helps a bit!  Again, figure out what drives you and play off of that.  It really is different for everyone, but in the end, the goal is the same.  Taking the time to get organized ultimately will save you time, money and sanity in the end.  It is one of the biggest returns on investment, so cheers to a happy and organized 2014!

  1. Amazing post! And, as I am reading, it realize it sounds JUST LIKE ME. When I decided to start my blog in 2011, I had no idea where to start. So, I did did a google search to find out how the blogging world even worked. Your blog was the first one that popped up and peaked my interest. I have been an avid reader ever since. I AM one of those people that lists organizing as a hobby... I AM one of those people that lets frustration trickle into cleaning out a drawer, which leads to a room getting reorganized, and next thing you know my entire house is getting something changed. Thank you for inspiring me and making me feel like I am not the only one who gets giddy about organizing!!! xoxo

  2. Awesome, currently purging our house whilst the hubby has some time off and I'm going to get us both to do the notepad for a day thing then compare notes about what frustrates us- then it can be a process of working together to make it work better for us rather than each developing our own systems that the other half isn't exactly aware of which can leave me feeling like we're pulling in different directions as to how things should happen or where things live! A great way to start off the new year-thanks. X

    1. Couldn't help but read your post and share my thoughts :)
If your Hubs is anything like mine, he'll depend on you to do all the planning and that's not exactly a bad thing! Take this opportunity to evaluate your 1. Space 2. Budget (should you need to buy equipment to organize and 3. Time frame (will your project take a day or a couple of weeks?). Finally attack your plan. I shared this in a recent post on my blog, as I just moved my family of 6 to a new apartment and the load of stuff that I need to put away got really overwhelming. I think my "three rules" may help you!

  3. Thank you for the printable! It is definitely what I need right now! I love to organize but alot like you and a million other women out there, I'm a mom of 3 with my youngest being a rambunctious 2-yr old boy and have crazy after-school schedules! I read your blog religiously and always look forward to what you have to say and write about the next day. You have inspired alot of organizing projects in my home that have been the missing piece of the puzzle. But, also like alot of people, its that time of year where everything has to be tweaked and re-done and maybe even over-hauled! This printable will help me get through that and I love that its pretty with lots of color! I too, am in love with color!

  5. Hi Jen,

Thanks for this updated post on where to begin. I have a more specific question regarding the planning aspect of projects/organizing. I love to plan but for me it takes a lot of thought and sometimes can be quick time consuming. Is this normal? How do you find time to plan everything out without getting overwhelmed?

    1. Hi Lyndsey!

Although I am a planner, I find more joy in just doing. Too much time planning could result in less doing, so it is definitely a balance. If you are taking on a HUGE project, it makes sense to go into it prepared with a plan, a budget and an idea of the type of storage you will need to make/purchase/install. However, smaller projects most likely don't need that level of planning. And the more you do, the more you learn for next time.

      xoxo!

  6. I stumbled across your blog about a month ago and have been in organization heaven ever since. You have given me a platform to launch so many personal projects off from and I am super grateful! Reading this post in particular really got gave me the urge to comment; it's such a wonderful breakdown of how to get started. Everyone's needs, frustrations and spaces are all different, but your tips could help anyone find a practical, easy starting point. Thank you so much for all your insight! Here's hoping for a streamlined, happy 2014! :o)

  7. Thank you for this post! I am a fairly new reader, as well as new to really organizing. We recently moved from a 1,600+ sq ft house with a garage and ample closets to a 950 sq ft "cottage" with teensy closets, one less bedroom, and no garage for storage. Organizing is big on my radar this year and I will be coming back to your blog for help in this new area :) Thank you for all your hard work, and making something that could be so daunting a little more fun!

  8. Jen, I am SO glad to know I am not the only one who gets distracted {I mean, inspired} by interiors in movies. I am constantly making my husband pause or rewind so I can get a better look at a space! I've even gone so far as to snap a photo of my tv screen so I can remember an idea for later!

  12. Okay, I've got a question that would really help me out a lot of you answered it.
Where oh where do you get all of that amazing gift wrap?! The yellow with the white polka dots, I completely heart it.
I've been saving cereal boxes to try your junk drawer wrap and organize project, but all I have is Christmas gift wrap and I don't want to waste all of my scrap book paper.

Thanks for all your awesome tips and tricks! Santa (er, my hubby) brought me a label maker and a laminator for Christmas and I am chomping on the bit to tear my house apart and organize my butt off! Lol!

  17. I'm a very well organized person by nature and have always been valued, both in my personal life and work-life, for my organizational skills. The reason I mention this is because I recognize how effective and efficient your proposed plan is. I also admire how you help people tackle with the associated {sometimes} underlying {emotional} issues. Gosh, this sounds a little pompous but it's well-intentioned.

  18. Making notes throughout a typical day is a phenomenal idea! I can't even count the number of times I get frustrated with something around here that isn't working/slowing us down/costing us money, but I move on, forget about it, and end up never fixing it. Then the next day starts, and I'm frustrated, slowed down, and losing money all over again. It's like the Groundhog's Day of frustration! I'm 100% serious when I say I think that tip may have finally set our house on the path to becoming more functional and enjoyable. Thank you!

  21. Oh my friend, we are so similar. LOL My organization happens the same way.... when I get frustrated with something. I love to be organized. And in quite a few areas, I am. Just not as good about making it pretty. At least it is functional for us though. There are still areas that need improvement, as with everyone. Nobody is perfect. I like that less visible/physical clutter means a more relaxed environment to live in. Also, thank you for the free printable for donations.. no more writing it out by hand. :) I dropped off a bunch of stuff at the good will around Christmas. Out with the stuff before new comes in. ;)

  22. What a great post. As I'm setting my goals for 2014 (after kind of failing at 2013), I'm looking for ways to stay motivated. Your printable will definitely help with that. Thanks for all of the tips.
I'm also going to be copying you on cereal boxes as organizing tools (so smart) and pretty papers for drawer liners etc. for the new dresser I've added to help organize my entryway. What's your usual source for papers? Are they contact paper, wrapping paper, craft paper?

  23. This is so helpful! Your pantry is like a dream come true. And your closet! (Also, Carrie's closet...) In any case, you are my organizational inspiration!

  28. Everything in this post sounds so familiar to me too. I love to craft, paint and sew, so many my organizational projects start as I want to make something pretty and functional. It´s so important to really like the outcome. And it doesn´t always happen the first time around, so patience is important. The key is to ask: what isn´t working and adress that.

And you are not alone, I constantly pay attention to interiors and think about desing, decor and organizational problems and solutions! Sometimes it´s overwhelmig and I hope I could turn it off sometimes ;)

  30. Thank you, Jennifer, for such a perfect post to start the year! From the first time I saw your cubbies for the kids bookbags, I have wanted to do something similar because my sons currently hang their bags and coats in the laundry room, and it is amazing how much stuff never makes its way there even though it is a very short walk through entry and kitchen to the laundry room! I love the Besta line and went to price them at Ikea last week and guess what? They were one of the Ikea Family deals!! So you got it, I bought it, and just can't wait to get it going. Organizing the entry of our home will be a great way to start off the new year. Keep your amazing tips and ideas coming!

  36. Jen, after reading this I acknowledged which "Type" of Organizer I am, which is the same as you. Get frusterated, take action!

So Saturday morning I decided to tackle our pots and pans cupboards, which then moved over to the other side of the cupboard, which led to under the sink, and then lead to above the sink, and the entire Kitchen cupboards.

What started out as me wanting to do the pots and pans (typically an open garbage bag (around time that it needs tossed) sits in front, so then the pots and pans get squeezed in/tossed in with out much care), lead to an entire kitchen overhaul...

I am pleased to say I purged, I was selective in what I put back, I added different things to help maintain a better system, i.e. hooks for measuring cups, a gaming stand (that we were no longer using) under the sink because it could easily be dismantled and set up around the existing pipework - this now holds (with labels, which the hubby loved lol) our mini muffin maker, waffle machine, and lean mean grilling machine.

So thanks for the extra boost in realizing that I was procrastinating on my frusteration area!

    Sam

Also, what I love about you is that your organization is PRETTY. I have this personal conflict that if it not pretty then its not organized, I know CRAZY, right, but I just can't help it. I was inspired by your armories, so I went to IKEA to one for my daughter and guess what??? They were on sale for $99, that is $149 off the original price. Of course I got one for my daughter and one for the basement. I loved how it turned out. I will have to post the pictures on my blog. I
I just want to say thank you for the inspiration!!!

  40. With 3 kids ages 5 and under, it's easy to get behind and overwhelmed. Add a house that we *were* remodeling before our first came along (insert screeching of breaks on said remodel) and the level of chaos in our home just seems to be multiplying exponentially. Just trying to enjoy these babies and not freak out a whole lot about the imperfection that is our home. It will come together, one project at a time. I love that you do most of your magic sporadically in 20-minute bursts of organizing out of frustration. Realistically, that's about all I can work in these days! Mine won't be pin-worthy, though, but that's okay! ;)

  44. Hi. One thing led to another, I searched for 'food', I went over 'organized food', there was a hyperlinked 'organized', and then voila. So far, this was the best tag I've arrived on the internet today.

But anyway, I'm kind of a messy person but 5 minutes of just looking at the pictures of your DIY's (I'm lazy in reading and I skip to looking at pics but not until I've seen your posts), I'm inspired to change a habit (not too late, I hope).

Simple question, how do you wrap 'entirely' your boxes? I mean, how about the insides of the boxes, how do you do them so symmetrically possible?

Thanks Jen for inspiring others to actually clean. ^_^

  47. All it takes is one look at your site and I wanna get off my bum and get a job done! I totally use printables and make your daily planner. (Scheduling - that's where I started.) But recently we just moved to a place twice as large and I have fresh paint, new furniture, and a fresh slate! I'm ready to get to work on the fun stuff!

  48. I love your containers that you have the snacks(goldfishes)in that has the square turquoise lids..Source? You always find the neatest containers..Wished I could go shopping alone and have all the time in the world to browse..DH likes to go out too but since he is somewhat handicap, it doesn't get me much freedom to take my time and look at lots of things...

  49. I have th s ame wardrobe as the last photo, and hate how the shelf side isn't as functional as I would like. The drawer unit you have in there, where is it from, because it looks like it fits perfectly!

    1. Hello! I purchased the organizer from The Container Store - it is from their kitchen ELFA line. You can read more about it here: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2012/06/conquering-clothing-clutter-my-closet.html

      xoxo!
