344 IHeart Blogiversary - Six Years Later

Happy Monday!  Did you have a great weekend?  Our weather was about as good as it could get and that made for the perfect combination of getting out and about with the family and also getting a really good start on Preston's headboard project.

Writing this post is a bit surreal for quite a few reasons. Mostly because when I started blogging just over 6 years ago, never would I have imagined that I would be still blogging six years later. Or that many of the amazing opportunities I have experienced over the last six years would be because of this blog. But also because I can barely believe that another year has already come and gone since I hit 5 years. (You can catch up on my 5 year blogiversary series here: Blogging Photography Tips, The Bread & Butter of the Blog, What I Have Learned Along the Way.)  It is like I blinked and boom, a whole year has come and gone.

So much has changed since a year ago, yet, I feel like I haven’t moved forward. In fact, this was a bit of a rough year for me and I maybe even took a few steps back.

Over the last year, a lot has happened behind the scenes and with me on a personal level, which I fear can be sensed in my blog writing here and there as well. That paired with writer’s block, project burn out and being over-saturated in the world of blogs, Instagram and Pinterest, I have been stuck in a bit of a rut. So for those of you that take the time to come here and visit on a frequent basis, I just want you to know that I sincerely appreciate and value those minutes, and I only want them to be 100% happy and positive minutes. And I thank you so very much for continuing to read and for your incredible support.  This community sure is a great one!

Although I have experienced natural highs and lows over my years of blogging, this past year had a higher frequency of feeling tired, stale, burnt out and even a little lost. Throw in a kitchen/living room renovation that has taken us much longer than expected and has also impacted how we utilize our home every day... it was all the perfect recipe to crash and burn. It is truly challenging when something that you love so very much isn’t going the way you envision it, and that is true for me when it comes to our home, my blog and my business as of late.

That said, I without a doubt LOVE organizing and creating order out of chaos. I thrive when I can look at a closet, drawer, cabinet or room and find ways to remove the unnecessary and create peace. It is equally as important to me to make every project special, beautiful and functional. It is what I crave and I know in my heart it is what I am meant to do.

I also enjoy sharing those projects with you. I have always believed that if even one single person was inspired by something I shared, then my day was a win. That is what brings me back here and wanting to continue with this amazing journey.

Looking back, blogging is not the same today as it was five years ago, and has even continued to change over the past year. There are more and more blogs on the scene every day. Ideas are on repeat. The bar is always being raised. Expectations from readers have shifted. I have never been one to want to create “quick” or “filler” content or post for the sake of posting (I have done it but have always regretted it), but I have also begun to feel that every post has to be a post of magnitude. That if we don’t have new projects or meaty posts to share multiple times per week, we are failing. This feeling came from two sources; my own personal expectations and standards as well as the feedback I have received in the form of a comments. Slowly, the blog became more of a place to showcase and provide tutorials and less of a place to get personal with friends over a cup of coffee.

Although I am currently teetering on the edge of blog burn out, I don’t want to burn out. I still love what I do, and don’t want to come to a point of resenting it. So many of my favorite bloggers have been sharing similar feelings or have even stopped posting all together, and although I find myself nodding my head and relating to a lot of the reasons why, I always miss their online presence and am not personally ready to leave.  #stuckwithme.

I frequently think about when I started blogging back in 2009.  I was posting 3-5 days per week and we were pumping out content and projects. We had an entire home that was waiting for our touch and that had not been seen or shared. Sure, we would get tired and there were definitely moments when I wasn’t maintaining a solid work/life balance, but we worked through it and usually came out smiling because of all we were accomplishing.  It was sort of the honeymoon phase of blogging.  But ultimately there was no healthy way to sustain at that pace. Today, every post takes me twice as long to write because my heart wants to create pretty, inspiring and detailed content to share. From working on a project to documenting every step, photo editing, graphic creating and writing a detailed post, I am spending anywhere from 6-10 hours on a simple project post to 12-18 on something more in depth (that is averaging the time it takes to do the actual project all the way to hitting the post “publish” button). And being that I don’t blog about recipes or fashion or typical lifestyle items, lately it has really come down to creating a project in order to have something worth sharing. Working on projects around the clock for six years has become both expensive and honestly a bit exhausting. Our home has project piles in every corner and my husband is always waiting for his next assignment. And we are constantly forced to decide between working on our home and enjoying our home and typically we pick the first option.  We know we are fortunate to be faced with those choices, but they do still wear on us from time to time.  Magazines create pages of content with the help of a team, photographers, writers, idea makers, sponsors, etc… and each issue takes months to put together. These days it seems as though bloggers are trying to keep up with similar inspiring and fresh content multiple times per week, as a 1-2 person team, while also managing hours of behind the scenes admin tasks and maintaining an online social presence as well. Throw in a shop to run and there really are not enough hours in the day. In fact, my shop hasn’t been given the attention it deserves at all in the past year and my “big plans” have been just that for quite some time.

Six years in, below are the items I would like to focus on moving forward:

  • Content: I can’t only share project posts as content and still post 3-4 times per week (it is just not realistic and is part of where this burn out feeling is coming from), or feel guilty if a day or two goes by and I have nothing new to share. Aside from our home projects (big and small), what other type of content would you like to see me share and create? I personally have been brainstorming a few ideas and would love to hear some from you all as well. One thing I would like to start is an occasional series of “What Would Jen Do?” based on a frequent email subject line from my readers. I would share a reader dilemma and before photo (a topic many people may see as a problem area) and offer up my solution, action plan, illustration and product recommendations. I would also like to design a free printable each month, share more quick tips, new organizing trends and products that catch my eye.  Occasional specific and quick organizing challenges are always well received. There are also many times when I read a great article or come across a super cool project/tutorial, and I want to share those as well. Maybe even small moments from around the home once a month (I am always swapping out bedding, accessories, finding new products, etc…).
  • Projects: My money maker has always been my shop, not my blog (little to no sponsored content happening here and still using Google Adsense as revenue which is so last year - ha). We are looking into ways of making the blog more profitable in order to keep up with project costs and content demand, but I also want to focus on my shop and diversify what IHeart Organizing is as a business. There will be days going forward that I will be dedicating to evolving, diversifying and growing additional arms of IHeart Organizing as a brand, so if I go quiet from time to time, that is where you will find me.
  • Balance: Nothing is more challenging than having to say “no” to family time in order work on our home and create content (this always seems like a fresh feeling after a summer of kids being home and me trying to keep up with business and being a full time mom). Bryan works outside of the home full time, helps coach sports, contracts out on the side and then comes home to a list of projects. I would love to give him a little bit of a break from time to time. Heck, I need one sometimes as well. When I worked in the corporate world, I had office hours, took three weeks of vacation and sick days as needed, and never once felt bad about it because it was part of my compensation package. I haven’t always been great about taking time off of IHeart work, even during travels and family vacations, so I am going to start tracking and enforcing days off. Taking small breaks here and there will only help me stay excited about what I do here, and will also allow me to be more present with my family.
  • New spaces: Although we have blogged every nook and cranny of our home over the past six years, it doesn’t mean we don’t have more long term plans for our home. A few wish list projects on the horizon are an entryway addition, a playroom/office switcharoo, a master bathroom gut, laundry room upgrades and exterior updates.  And can we talk about the need to organize our horrendous kitchen corner cabinet and freezer drawer?  But as I mentioned, I really would like to diversify and also work on spaces outside of our home. Years ago I started this blog with hopes of becoming a professional organizer and helping others. This next year I am hoping to re-visit those goals. Because I heart organizing, but I really heart helping others.

Bottom line, I don’t plan on going anywhere just yet. I am still going to post when I have something worth posting and sharing, in hopes of helping even just one person. But I may not post every day. Or have new projects every single week. I want to continue to love what I do and do what I love, but I also want to do it well and with gusto and excitement and not with resentment or into the midnight hour. I always preach the importance of finding balance, and I have always failed at actually doing it. Hopefully, putting it all in writing will help me feel better about finding that happy medium and really implement it moving forward.

In six years, we have knocked out a large variety of projects big and small and written a total of 1,550 posts.  I mean really, that is A LOT of posts.  I am cracking a bottle of wine over that milestone tonight.  Many of my favorites are shown throughout this post as a reminder to myself to stick with what I know, love and feel excited about.  And I hope that you will continue with me on this crazy ride for as long as it goes.

Thank you all so much for listening and being the best support group a girl can ask for.  These posts are always hard to write, but I always feel better when I do.

Happy Blogiversary to IHeart Organizing and cheers to many more!

UPDATE: My heart is currently bursting from the magnitude of support you all have given me this week.  I wish I could personally write and hug each of you to thank you for the kind comments, encouragement, emails, text messages and love that I am continuing to receive each day.  This last couple of days have been really good for my soul and I am going to continue to take the remainder of the week off to absorb your comments and reassess a few things moving forward.  The very talented Ursula will be here tomorrow to share her recent beautiful project, and I am hoping to be back next week.  Again, thank you so very much for the love, I was once again blown away by this remarkable community that I am endlessly grateful to be a part of.

  2. Jen - your blog continues to be a must-read for me and I'm pretty sure I've been following it since near the beginning. Thank you for all of the ideas and inspiration. I enjoy reading your quick tips just as much as your big project updates. I'm a mother of four boys . . very similar in ages to yours. I really enjoy when you write about ways to make home life run smoothly as well. Blessings as you find a sustainable balance for you and your family!

  3. I don't comment very often but I just wanted to pop in to say you inspire me in more ways than you know. I look forward to reading your blog over a cup of hot coffee while my boys are napping and you inspire to make me want to make a prettier, more organized house. I totally understand the burn out with blogging, heck I sometimes feel burn out for all the projects I want to do in my house but I don't have the pressure of running a blog. You need to do what makes you happy and what feels right for you. I get excited for any one of your posts! Heck I still mourn YHL blogging departure and I would be sad to see the same happen to you. I love your quick tip tuesdays, big and small projects and I would love to see more personal blog posts (as much as you are willing to share of course) and maybe even fashion since you always look super cute and new organizing products or new accessories you bought or how you switched small things around in your house. Happy blogiversary and I hope there are many more!

  4. Happy anniversary! I found your blog less than a year ago and love seeing all your projects! I can totally see why you're feeling burnt out - that is a lot of constant work! I look forward to seeing your future projects. Wouldn't mind seeing more of lifestyle posts with recipes and outfits (I would assume those are less consuming than full on projects) Keep it up and enjoy that wine :)

  5. I love your blog and all that you do! Keep up the goodwork!! I love the idea of What would Jen do?! I have a problem area right now I can think of and would love to email you about it. I would also love reading about other people's areas that they are having issues with. It would generate a ton more ideas!

    1. Thank you so much Sarah! I am trying to plan out all of the logistics of the "What Would Jen Do" post, but hope you save your space to share with me when I am ready to take those on. :)

    2. I love this idea too. Let's you take a break from your space and give you an outlet to help others.

    3. I agree - I have so many spaces that I don't know what to do with and I'd love to see your ideas for! I recently cut down the number of blogs in my feed as I don't have as much time after having a baby but yours is one I always make time for; I think it is the way you write as much as the great ideas. I really enjoy the quick simple ideas as much as the big projects as they are something I can take on myself. I really hope you manage to find the balance and keep writing at least occasionally!

  6. Aww, Jen. So glad you are here and still posting but I hate that it has become somewhat of a burden on you. If it is any consolation, some of my favorite posts of yours have been smaller projects. I absolutely love your blog. It is truly my little happy place. I understand blogger burnout...I still miss Young House Love! My thoughts and prayers are with you as you make your plans for the future. Lots of love! Happy Anniversary!

  7. I just want to say Thank You, Jen. I have never commented before, but I have your blog on my reader and read it first whenever you post. You are changing my habits, slowly but surely, on how I tidy up and organize the spaces in our home. If you want to talk balance, I know what you're talking about. Even down to finding time to read all the blogs I'm interested in. If you weren't to post every day, I wouldn't forget about you, but when you did have a post, I'd be right there with you. I like the idea of "what would Jen do?" but that should be a fun post, occasionally and not one that adds pressure to your life. Just my (very thankful for the talents you share) 2 cents.

  8. Thanks for the honest post! Feeling burnt out a is natural...this is your job and it definitely happens to anyone with a career over time. That's life! :) And changing over time to do more of what makes you happy is the best thing you could for your blog. It'll show. I think showing more projects outside of your home and offering tips to others is a great idea (can you come organize my basement?! haha). Good luck to you!

  9. I just LOVE your blog, your hard work is so inspirational. I work outside the home full time, 2 young kids, and a husband on an opposite shift schedule so we need as much organization as possible. You are my number one go-to when I need an idea (and frankly, kind of my only go-to!) I am a Wisconsin girl and when I found you, I was so excited to see you were from WI too. I scoured your blog to find out how to get you to come help at my house ;-) I love the new ideas you have for the blog and I love seeing a new posts from you, big or small. Take breaks when needed, and don't pay attention to any of the negative you may hear. I don't want to lose you! Congrats on 6 years!

  10. I can't speak for all readers, but I know I would gladly take 1-2 small posts a week with a large one thrown in when it is applicable to none at all. I met you at the I heart a humble meet and greet with Amanda, so fun! It was so great to be involved and inspired (and to see my mug on your website!). I think we all truly see your blog as an inspiration for REAL life, and while most of us know magazines are beautiful, they are more a snapshot in time versus a real time problem getting solved. Keep up the good work, even with achieving a balance, you will always have readers stick with you:)

  11. I have to say that your blog has inspired a lot of my organizing / design around our home despite the fact that I almost never comment. I reference a lot of your older posts frequently (i.e.: I just last week redid our side-by-side fridge/freezer based on your design long ago).

Regarding comments, I sometimes find it silly when people say: "I want to to see more THIS" or make negative comments as to blog changes. There's millions of blogs in the internet sphere and nit-picking one is just silly. For me, personally, I'm NOT a DIY-er, so I usually skip those posts in favor of the organizing ones, but that's okay and I don't think you should ever change your style to fit one reader. Just be YOU!

  12. I admire you for realizing that you are burning out and that you ask us what we would like to see on your blog...i love your blog first of all, and yours is one of only maybe 3 that i constantly come to for ideas. I love the remodels you do, but I also love that you have normal people projects that don't include expensive wood cutting machines etc! I myself run 2 businesses from home and am short on time, but i love to organize, save money, travel and paint anything a brush and roller can paint. I feel anything you post would be interesting to me. I think smaller projects, easier projects etc are just as good as say your kitchen remodel. I will be looking forward to either. Please don't feel discouraged, we all feel like we should always have to improve or do bigger at times, But in the end, what's most important is what is important to you and that is your family. When we make time for them, work should come second and we should't feel guilty, (I'm working on that too). Love your blog and your honesty and for that I will continue to visit even if it's just 1 post a month! Thank you for all your hard work!

  13. Hi Jen! I think I've been following your blog for close to 5 years if not more. I LOVED seeing your projects and I love your taste! Pretty much the same as mine! I love your color choices, I love your organization skills, everything! But I have to admit that once you turned your blog over to other contributors I lost interest. I didn't want to see their stuff (no offense) - I want YOUR stuff. If that means I have to wait a week in between posts then I'll do it. I have always stayed connected to you. I know we've never met and we probably won't, but I feel like you are my friend. Thank you for keeping up your Blog and Happy Blogiversary!!

    2. I do understand what Iammai0616 is saying, but I have to say, I found Hi Sugarplum! through Cassie's contribution to this blog and hers has become another one of my favorite blogs. If it was nothing but contributors, then I could see it being more of a problem. Just playing devil's advocate and trying to put out there an additional point of view!

  15. Congratulations! What an accomplishment! As a long-time anonymous reader...I felt compelled to tell you that you have inspired me countless time throughout the last few years. I have ideas and projects of yours all throughout my home! I love your inspiration, humor and honestly that you share and am constantly amazed at how creative and motivated you are! Who can blame you for being exhausted ;) sometimes I'm exhausted just READING about all you are getting done!

It's funny, I used to think that as my children got older and more independent I would have more time to tackle the never-ending "to do list". However, I'm finding myself even busier with tweens and teens...don't be too hard on yourself, the work/home balance is always a challenge and I wish you the best as you figure out the solution to what works best for you and yours!

For what it's worth...I think the "what would jen do" would be a super fun series. I also find your posts on little projects just as inspiring! I'd much rather see you around less often than not at all. Best of luck...and THANK YOU!

  16. Congratulations on the blogiversary! I have been following your blog for about 4 years now, and continue to love everything about it. You constantly inspire me, not only for ways that I can improve my home, but for tricks that can make everyday life easier! You have always been very genuine and authentic, and I think we all (as readers) appreciate that from you. I LOVED the ideas you gave for combating burnout as you move forward. I think the most important thing about any content on the blog is that its something that speaks to you, whether that's new organizational trends, a new product that you think is worth sharing, posts from other blog contributors, your style (you have such great fashion sense!), or even just catching up! I promise you that I will continue to return to the blog (and probably even enjoy it more) if you are not constantly feeling the need to post big projects. Go after those goals with your shop and your career! I love the idea of "what would jen do?" posts! I may have to send you some pictures from my house! I would love your guidance! And pursue personal organizing! Like one of the other commenters, I was soooo sad about Young House Love's departure from the blogosphere, and I think you still have so much to bring to your readers. And if you find a good work-life balance, please teach me your ways ;)

  17. Jen--

I have been a loyal reader for years and I think one thing that sets you apart is quality over quantity. Your readers will understand breaks between posts because your content is fantastic. As well, I think many readers are more easily able to identify with smaller, less time consuming, and less expensive projects anyway. You do a fabulous job--don't put pressure on yourself and give yourself time to enjoy your life, your family, and the wonderful home you have created! You inspire me and so many others--keep up the good work! And the "What Would Jen Do" idea sounds awesome!

  18. I was starting to get nervous reading this, thinking it was headed in a "I'm giving up blogging"' way. So glad you aren't! Interested in all your potential post ideas and even small decor switches and stuff. I like seeing new stuff people get because then maybe I'll see something I like too. Happy blogoversary!

  19. Dear Jen, I just came across your blog this year at about the same time as I was having a kind of personal meltdown trying to manage a perfect storm of moving to a new home, being a first-time mom to a six-month old and going back to work full-time. It was a totally overwhelming time for me and even just seeing the pictures of your beautiful work on your blog was so helpful and calming. But I get that same feeling of calm when I flip through a Martha Stewart magazine - the difference with your blog is that, amazingly, your work motivated me to make time to actually try some of your projects on my own, and apply the concepts you were talking about to some aspects of my home/life. I have a long way to go and my systems aren't at all perfect yet but you've really helped me see the value in not only organizing but in making it a lovely, joyful task (I always felt guilty about my frivolous trips to the Container Store before). It seems strange to say, but reading your blog was really a turning point for me in starting to get a grip on my life with all of its new changes, and no matter what you ultimately decide to do, I just wanted you to know that you did help me a lot. Thank you.

    2. I'm an empty nester grandma, so not your usual demographic, but I love your blog. You've inspired me to completely re-do the way I use my refrigerator and freezer - even lining the shelves! (and I've been married 40 years!) I also like to hear the personal stories. Like, how does your family take to changes in their routines, and home organization? Do you ever give up and go back to what they are used to?
I appreciate the time you take and hope you will be able to find balance. What you've done matters.

  22. Jen,

Congratulations on your big milestone! I have never ever commented on a blog post before (!!) but I wanted to congratulate you and encourage you to continue. I can understand the feeling of burnout - I sometimes feel burned out just thinking about what I'd like to do with my home. I Heart Organizing is hands down my favorite blog, and I think diversifying your content to lighten your load sounds fantastic. I love the "What would Jen do?" and I think any type of column where you offer advice to FAQs or a reader's personal style dilemmas would be great!! Thank you for all your contributions to the blog world!!

  24. I don't think I've ever commented before, but after reading your very real (thank you!) blog post I wanted to weigh in... You are one of my very favorite bloggers! I am organization-challenged and you inspire me to at least TRY... Now that I have 4 kids and an insanely busy life I need that inspiration so badly. I recently made over my closet and had you (and your closet) in mind the whole time. It's now one of my fave spaces in the house.

I would always wonder as I checked in with you each day how you maintained your pace (kids, sports, your shop, the house, the dogs, the blog). It boggled my mind! I love that you are acknowledging the need to make some changes to keep yourself fresh and passionate, and I love your new ideas. Rest assured, I will remain a faithful reader!! As an aside, I LOVED seeing the dorm makeover. The idea of you acting as a professional organizer and helping others to make over their spaces makes me so excited - I would love to see before and afters that would continue to inspire!! Good luck, rest up, and take care.

  25. Happy blogiversary! Loved this honest and heart felt post. I have been in the same situation. My blog isn't nearly as big as yours, but I was finding it harder and harder to reach people. I conducted several surveys with little response. People would tell me they wanted to see more blog posts, but from my stats, people weren't tuning in. I started doing YouTube videos in March after many people wanted to see videos added to my blog. Then, readers said I did YouTube too much and I needed to blog more. I realized I couldn't win for losing. I was pushing out 4-5 blog posts a week and 2 videos a week on top of working full time, having two kids, and a husband that coached. I couldn't do it. I blogged/vlogged for a fun hobby and it was turning into the opposite. So, I decided my space was about what I wanted to do and loved. Sometimes, we have to step back and make ourselves happy. :) You have been my #1 blog inspiration and I am sure not going anywhere. xoxo

  28. Dear Jen,

I am a mother of 4, and I want you to know how much you really do help people and make a difference in their lives through your online presence. I came across an article about you and your blog in Better Homes and Gardens about 2-3 years ago that intrigued me, and once looking up your blog online, opened up a new world for me. Reading your blog, and all the ones you followed, has truly helped and inspired me in so many ways... organizing my home, how to decorate, how to simplify. I often wondered how you do it all. Your post today just proves you are human, and you need to take the time to do what is best for you, and your family. Would hate to see you burn out and not love what you do anymore, when your creativity and mad organizing skills have inspired and helped so many! I'll still read your blog, no matter how few and far between your posts are. Your blog started it all for me, and I'll always be a fan! Good luck with everything you strive to do that will work best for you and your family, and hope this year will be everything you hope it to be.

  29. I really don't comment much on any blogs. Perhaps I need to be more present just to say - I love what you do! Why? Because you inspire me to tackle my own projects, I love your design aesthetic and you share the good the bad and the ugly. Keep being YOU, even as it evolves. Those of us that still jive with it will continue on, and others will become new fans. Don't allow anyone to tell you how best to be YOU as a blogger or a person. It is so vital to be authentic and to support each other, even when that might mean a good bye. No one's opinion, or 2 cents, should be more valuable than our own feeling of happiness. Blaze on! I think your "What would Jen do?" would be a fabulous addition. I often find myself thinking this while I contemplate projects :-)

  30. Jen, Please know how much we LOVE your blog and we know that you are in no way obligated to post! Remember, this is for fun and when you're feeling inspired, we'll be here waiting! Trust me..when you miss a day, I just go back and look at one of your previous projects! Your blog gives me inspiration, a shot of energy and a lot of I♥Organizing, too, smiles! Life is so busy these days and our babies grow up so quickly. Our families come first. We'll be here when you're ready! Sheri

  31. I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way, but you could always just talk to us? I may be in the minority but I don't need a big project post every day. The reason I like your blog so much is because of your personality! I enjoyed the post where you talked about what worked and what didn't about your living room more than the actual living room reveal!

  32. I was nervous as I kept reading this post as I was afraid you were going to say you were done blogging. I know you used to be a huge Young House Love fan (me, too!) and I am willing to bet you've thought of them when you've thought of your situation. Let me just say, I love your plan. I think it's easy to be hard on yourself and put too much pressure on yourself. I think the majority of your readers would be excited even if you only posted once a week! Reading your blog has inspired me many, many times to organize something or put a new plan into place. I would miss this space SO much if it were totally gone. So thank you for brainstorming ways for you to hopefully not get burned out! I think all your plans of posts sound awesome - especially coming up with ideas for readers problems! I think that would be a fun way for you to be able to put on your organizing cap (that helps others!) but have a fresh take on it that doesn't make you work on your own house. I hope these comments reassure you that you are doing the right thing and we all just want to support you and have you continue to love blogging!

  33. This is a fascinating post to me, I'm wrapping up my master's thesis about women's blogging, and one of my key findings was the unsustainability of extrinsic motivation for maintaining a blog. It seems like burnout invariably follows where bloggers start doing things because they feel like they need to (for readers or money) instead of because they want to (because they enjoy the process of creating for themselves). And heavens lady, you're one of the very best at what you do. By all means give yourself permission to find a work-model that is sustainable and meets your needs. If that means losing some readers or brushing off some thoughtless, tactless comments, it'll be totally worth it to feel like you are in control of what you are doing and where you are headed. Please don't make decisions based on some vague idea of what trends are surfacing in blogdom and amongst blog readers. Those are way too fickle of concepts to base concrete decisions that affect you and your family on. Decide what you can enjoy creating, and how you can best make it work for your life, (and seriously, maximize your passive income), and go ahead and set the boundaries to make that happen and be okay with it.

  34. Slow down! It's okay with your readers. We come back because we enjoy you and love your style and talent. Only change your home because you want to, not because you have to have something to blog about. We love seeing all the parts of your life that you care to share; home, recipes, outfits.

  35. Congratulations for sticking around for so long and bringing good ideas in this world. You certainly have inspired me to reconsider my daily life. In good way.

Pragmatic aspect - try MinMax principle: a post, ONE post per month.
Alles. No more. No under any circumstances.

As time-filler, over the month - cross-posting, etc etc. Because even the most awesome hobby could become tedious chore, if you do not limit your relationship with it.

Showing and sharing your ideas is great. As a reader I would love to wake up to new post a day, sure. :)

But you, as author of the blog, live your life once only; the time with husband and your children won't return, to enjoy once more.

One can build simple and functional shelves for books all over flat, improve bathroom, even reconstruct your house's foundation.. but if you take care to document everything visually as well describe - there is very little time to enjoy the life with your family in this house.

At the end of the day.. doing good for world is great. But you have to consider your priorities, why you are doing this. And in order to maintain that lovely wish for organizing still burning may be you have to take a step back, to make a distance, before you are too fed up with everything.

Take time for yourself, for family - to decompress, just enjoy the life. Live and love. For a year.

And then see, what you want at the end of your year, after twelve months.

The best for you and your family.
    Anna

  36. First of all, huge congrats to 6 amazing years of blogging! You were the one who first inspired me to start creating and sharing on a blog. And secondly, I feel the burn and I'm only 2.5 years in... I can only imagine after 6 years. Give yourself some grace and don't let us pressure you to create something new all the time! Make sure to heartYOURSELF a little and we'll all still be here! =)

  37. Congratulations on 6 years!! Your blog is one of the reasons I started blogging almost 3 years ago. I love your organizing ideas and your bright fun home! I totally agree with the feeling of a constant need to create something new and post almost daily. I have stuck to a twice a week posting schedule (sometimes 3 if I have something fun to share!) and while it's not the norm, and according to the "experts" not enough to quickly grow my pageviews, it's what works for me. The most important part of my blog is sharing what I love to do (decorating and organizing my home), and if life gets in the way, so be it, I can post something later. It's difficult to get over that feeling of needing to post all the time, but the truth is, if I am not excited about posting something, then why would I expect someone to be excited to read it?

Keep up the great work, I always enjoy seeing what you are up to, and being inspired to get my home more organized.

  38. I absolutely adore your blog. I can honestly say all the projects you post are interesting and beautiful. You do a fabulous job and are one of three or four blogs that I cant wait to read. Trust me I have raised three children and completely understand the need to balance work and home. And with most of your work being in the home, it has it special challenges. I love your decorating style and your love for organizing is obvious. I love the idea of "what would Jen do". We all could learn from other readers decorative or organizing dilemmas. A recipe or two thrown in would be great. The inside of your house is beautiful so maybe let us in on some outside projects as they come along. Whether it be decorating for holidays or flower beds etc. Happy blogiversary!! Looking forward to what year #7 has in store.

  39. Congrats on the milestone! I love reading your blog each day and can't even imagine the amount of effort it takes- emotionally and physically- to do what you do. The best thing about blogs in general is that they are (usually) created and run by REAL people, not corporations. Your blog is so polished and beautiful and always inspiring. I know you've geared I Heart Organizing to home decor and organization, but I know I'm not the only one who would love to hear more about just life in general from you i.e. how you manage sports for 3 boys, food prep for a family of five, even info about car organization (i know you've done some of that before). I can completely understand the desire to not have some many projects, and I don't think any of your readers will care if you scale back a bit. In order for a blog to be successful, the reader has to like the WRITER, not just the content- so do what makes you happy! Best of luck!

I found you guest-posting and that is another way to gain new readers so you could do the flip and start a guest post series? 43. It is crazy where the world of blogging has gone! It started with s handful of key blogs that everyone knew about and read and turned into this giant world. Even as a reader , not a blogger, it went from a fun place for inspiration to an overwhelming feel that if you aren't constantly working on a house project or decorating remodel you are behind the 8 ball. Ignore the pressure. Be who you are. Share snippets of inspiration and fun new things you've discovered. That is what got everyone interested in reading blogs from the beginning. That is what will keep you unique and not burnt out.

  44. I found you through money saving mom when you posted about time management. Truly that and the organizational ideas are what I come here for.
Your bigger projects are beautiful and WHEN I have a project to work on I will search your archives for ideas. But I'm not making a project that often. Time and money are not always available for such big things! Your little ideas are great and often it's the the thought process you talk about and the why for your projects that intrigue me. It helps me think things through. Like you're sitting across from me giving me thoughtful questions to answer. I also like when you talk about things that didn't work for you. Or problems you ran into. Again provides some insight into what could happen and things to consider.
I agree with someone above that mentioned "just talk to us"! We want to listen!

  45. Happy Anniversary! I love all your posts but the ones that you are especially transparent (like this one) are my favorite because they speak to me and echo what I feel. I am reading a book called "For the Love" by Jen Hatmaker and I love it so far! She speaks about how women we feel guilty often because in order to "kill it" in one area, we fall short in another. Although my blog is small when I listen to interviews from YHL, I can totally understand why it became overwhelming when the blog they had eventually "had" them. I think all your amazing readers will understand any restructuring and I love all your new ideas! What would Jen do WWJD…so cute! I looooove the idea of "what would Jen do" and would be so happy to participate myself. Why dont you do posts like Megan and Cassie do...but instead of fashion, curate home decor posts! You can flex some more design skills by maybe designing a virtual room and then posting the sources, or even some save vs splurge where you find items for cheap that look like the more expensive options. That would give your hubby a break and although it can still be a little bit of time work wise, you could be more flexable about when you are searching for those items. I would love to see that!

  47. I've been a fan of your blog for years - have sent posts to organizing-like-minded friends, and genuinely enjoy seeing posts from you in my inbox. So first - a long over due THANK YOU. Like you organizing just makes me happy, and your writing and work contribute to that.

Above all do what you need to do for you and your family. If/when/as you pursue growing your business I'd love to read about that journey. Two paragraphs into your post I said to myself, 'why hasn't she pursued the professional organizer thing yet?' and was thrilled to see you mention it as a goal. You may change your mind, but from reading about your work all these years I give two very enthusiastic thumbs up followed by a few grinning emoticons. Go for it!!! If willing - include us in your new forays by writing about it on the blog - and know you've got one (many, really) dedicated readers.

Last - you asked for feedback on content. Your ideas sound awesome - especially the 'what would Jen do' posts to reader submitted questions. Sponsored posts are the fastest way for me not to read something...not because I think I'm owed the content for free (because I'm not...bloggers need to be able to sustain themselves), but because I find the posts (most of the time) flat. I'd rather see a blogger take time to diversify her/his business to provide income revenue, write fewer posts, and avoid sponsor driven content. Across all those blog posts the consistent factor is your voice and passion; that's what's kept me reading for years.

    Good luck!

  48. Congratulations Jen! Yours is the first (and favorite!) blog i ever found while i was looking for playroom inspiration almost five years ago. I went back and read every post to the beginning! You have a GIFT (from God) in organizing, and making things so pretty and functional. In this Pinterest-perfect-comparison world we live in, its hard to just stay true to your gut and not get caught up in the frenzy of it. Your blog is so great because of your talent and passion and when you stay true to that - you THRIVE! I can sense it sometimes when i read your posts. Sometimes i have commented and told you...."stick with your gut".
I love your ideas and would love to see What Would Jen Do, as well as your organzing ideas, products, etc. Don't feel like you have to post "big" things -because they're all big when you are helping us organize our lives in small ways. And, at the end of the day its your marriage and children that are far more important! :-) Your generous sharing has been a blessing to me, and i hope you "stick to your roots" as they say because that's what made you and your blog so lovable!
Congrats again, and thanks for all you do!

  49. I've only recently (in past year) found your blog, and I enjoy it. Love the idea of "What would Jen do?" types of posts. Also, do your friends have different era houses (thus different types of problem spaces) that perhaps you could use as project posts? Things like our 60s era house w/ no walk-in closets (so best way to organize those), no entryway closet so best compact way to have a dumping ground, etc.

Have you thought about doing product reviews or comparing pros/cons of 2-4 different options (this spice jar vs that one, this shelf system vs that one, for a traditional look use this and for a modern look use that)?

  53. I have been following you for about 4 years. What I think sets you apart is how real you are. I like that you try things and sometimes they don't work out. I love your honesty and can do attitude. Sometimes I think burnout and hitting a low spot is just a transition into changing things up and having a fresh perspective. You work extremely hard, it's ok to have these times in your life, I think it's growth and it isn't always fun. I can appreciate that you want to give readers want they want, but this is your job and life, do and post what you like. Stay true to who you are, maybe some readers won't agree but you will pick up new readers along the way. I love all your posts big and small, and I especially love your feelings about them. That is everyday stuff and so relatable. Follow your instincts and I wish you all the best

  56. I think this is only my second time commenting, but your post deserved a comment! I can completely relate to your burn out. I am a full-time Realtor. I work from home and have a 3 and 5 year old who my parents watch while I work. I always struggle with balancing work and home life. That is especially difficult when you are self employed. I always think how much more time I had when I held a corporate job. I actually balanced my check book. I haven't done that since I left the corporate world 9 years ago!

It is very challenging to step away when you work from home and you are your own boss. It took being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease three years ago for me to stop and smell the roses. I realized my stress and poor diet contributed to developing Graves/Hashimotos and so I have learned to say no to my business partner and others when my plate is full. Or even if it's not and I want to make more time for my kids. My health has improved tremendously over the last three years as I have taken time to learn to cook everything from scratch (as well as dairy & grain free!) and reduce my workload. Don't feel bad for taking time for yourself. You don't realize how stress can literally kill you until you get diagnosed with something.
I absolutely love that you want to start helping readers. I always look at my messes and think "What would Jen do?" I have often wished I could take a photo of my disorganization and ask your advice. I think you are really on to something with this idea! Heck, I would happily pay you to consult on projects and help me get on track. That would be a great revenue stream for you ;).

  59. Jen,

I love your blog and often find inspiration in the projects you post whether big or small. The frustrating part for me is trying to transpose your ideas into a renter friendly environment. 61. I stumbled upon your blog 3 years ago, when I moved out of my parents' house and into a somewhat neglected rental home. As I struggled to find a way for the house to feel like home en work with me instead of against me, I became a Pinterest-addict. When I stumbled upon your blog, I read the 3 years of content in one weekend, taking notes as I did. I reorganized my kitchen 3 times, started working with baskets and labels, created an Household folder, survived the move to my new apartment just a month ago...

Just to say, you've made an impact in my life.

I know that readers (including myself) have a certain need for posts. It's like an addiction, I check your blog daily. It's in my favourites :)
But I also know that in order for this blog to remain the walhalla of organizing, you need a balance, you need time to actually work on a project, you need inspiration. I can only speak for myself of course, but I wouldn't stop visiting the site if you posted less. And I think about 80% of your visitors would feel the same.

Now, to answer your question about the content. I feel like there are two aspects to this answer. The first is, what do YOU love? What do you want to share, teach us, what makes your blog different from other blogs,...?
And then there's what we, readers, want to read. Personally, I love the idea of What would Jen do. I would also love to read more how-to's. How to make beautiful pictures of your spaces (for example, when you sell a home). How to stage your home for certain seasons. How to prepare for your first housewarming party,...
Maybe some of these subjects have already come up...

But I think the most important thing I can say is, write about what you love, when you want to and post when you're ready for it. Concentrate on the aspects that you're passionate about. And maybe, don't write about every project you do around the house... Maybe that's also what makes it difficult for you to balance work and life. Maybe your house is starting to feel like your work...

Anyway, I hope that, as you read all of the comments, you feel the support and love we send you :) And I hope that you realise that love and support doesn't go away when you post less.

  62. Congrats and cheers to you!

About me: I'm not married, I don't have kids, and I do NOT heart organizing (but I love when I find something that helps me to get more organized, like your blog, which has given me lots of great ideas).

I am perfectly happy reading 1-2 posts per week, that seems normal to me and with a full-time job and other creative projects, I frankly often don't have time to read more than that myself! I agree it would be silly to create projects just for the sake of blogging about something.

I love the idea of WWJD, or your blogging about a project outside of your home (a friend's space, etc).

I really like your style but since I'm a single person, do not really have the need for a full-board organization notebook/system, but I have purchased 1-2 things from your shop and would be interested in your branching out there, if that's what gets you going! :)

We ALL get burned out on our jobs from time to time. Totally normal. It's great you are re-thinking what you love and don't love and trying to steer yourself closer back to something that works for you. Take heart -- that is great you are aware of it and are going to take action. We can't always do so when working for other people.

Congrats again, and thanks for all the inspiration and ideas.

I think you work harder than any other blogger I have come across to produce interesting, worthwhile posts without 'filling in' with stuff that would be less interesting to your readers. I think we have all been able to see the burn out on the horizon but only because ALL of your posts are SO incredible! It seems that it must be virtually impossible to keep that up forever. I think your readers completely understand the need for you and your hubby to have down time, take time off to be with your family and just rest and recover after all your hard work! I would much rather see less posts and know that you are living a happy, balanced life and one where you feel able to keep sharing with us readers whenever you feel it's right to do so. All your ideas for the future sound great. I'm pretty sure that whatever you do, your readers will be right behind you. Stick with it (we would all miss you so much if you didn't) and remember that you are only human, and we will all be here waiting with baited breath whenever you are able to share. You are an inspiration to so many. xx

  71. Jen, I love you and your blogposts, whether it's 3Xa week or once! Do what makes you happy because YOU make me happy! Congrats on the anniversary! Well done! XO

  72. I would love to see the "what would Jen do?" series, both virtually and also in real life. I've enjoyed your posts where you go in and help someone organize a room or space of their own. It reminds me of Super Nanny, but for organizing! (Super Jen!). This is my favorite blog and so I don't want to see you burn out. Do what you need to do to stay sane and have balance. Honestly I don't have time to visit here more than once a week anyway so if there are just 1-2 quality posts in that timeframe, that works!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Happy Blogiversary! I look forward to and enjoy each and every post.

You shouldn't be so hard on yourself! Honestly given the time it takes to generate your content I think we'd all still hang in there if you only posted once a week. Also - I sense a fellow perfectionist here and I'll share a secret to make your life simpler that I learned the hard way - once imposed upon me by my husband - IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT! Whatever "it" is, I assure you none of your loving readers expect perfection. As much as I love your photos, if you put in half the time taking and preparing them I'd still love you! And you'd likely be happier spending that time doing something else, am I right?

I hope to celebrate, you take some time off! I personally would miss you but gladly give you a month off from blogging. Sometimes you just have to stop and regroup.

Thanks for a great 6 years!

  74. I know this isn't a cooking blog, but maybe a guest post or something about freezer cooking so we can organize food better? I would love some posts this next spring/summer about getting my child ready for campus.
    Thanks!

  75. Happy anniversary. You have achieved so, so much. Reading your blog is the highlight of my weeks.

It's funny as this morning i was thinking "Wow, Jen and her husband must push themselves so hard, and work so hard." I don't even know you but was thinking about you!

I am not a blogger so I know there are things I don't get, but the thing I love is routine. Could you just blog once a week, and spend the rest of the time on other parts of your business and life? I would not mind that at all and would prefer it to you feeling you need to post more frequently, but then getting properly burnt out.

I also love links to other projects so a post with links would be fun (but maybe that's way more work than actual posting original stuff?).

I have read you saying this was a bit of bridge to being a professional organiser. Perhaps that time is now? You could post one of your professional jobs a month?

I hope I haven't seemed too know it all, these are just thoughts.

    Enjoy your day!

  78. Hi Jen, I love your blog. It's my favourite, but most of all I love that you're doing this as a wife and a mum. You're totally inspirational! Thank you for your honesty about the pressures that you have been under with your blog. I hope that you find a balance that works for you and your family, and that you're able to give yourself some grace. You must do what's right for you... don't worry about us. We'll still be here supporting you and loving the amazing content that you put out! Take care of yourself, and congratulations on 6 years of blogging! x

  81. Thanks so much for your inspiration and candor over the years. Honestly, I have noticed that you have not (yet?) added "native ads" to your content and it's actually quite refreshing in blogland! Take care of yourself and keep the conversations personal, big, little, etc. Even simple posts like "how's that working 6 mos later" are super duper helpful! Thanks for all you do!

  82. Congratulations on six great years! Although I don't comment very often, I love your blog. I often just go through your pictures. Repeatedly. They are serene and make me feel good. :) I will gladly take whatever you offer, no matter how seldom you decide to post.

  83. I've been a loyal fan for almost 4 years now. You are the only blog I truly love. You helped pick me up from a huge life change (going from zero to 5 kids in 3 years - 3 from marriage, then the birth of twins) and helped me get inspired to live a more organized, purposeful, beautiful life. I would rather read fewer posts than read no posts, so I hope you find the balance you are seeking. I love your personality and thought process. I would love to hear some ideas about organizing less exciting things, such as recipes and daily schedules. I would love reading about what you are doing in your Etsy shop too! I like the idea of "What would Jen do".

  87. I am so impressed by your female readers, offering so much support and encouragement. I believe us women should lift one another up, especially in times when we need it most. I enjoy your blog and 100% agree, only write/post when you are inspired or excited to share. I am a small business owner and share a quarterly newsletters with my Clients. I put off writing these newsletters as I don't enjoy them as much as I enjoy meeting clients, running my business etc. so I can completely understand how posting can be so time consuming and can sometimes feel more like a chore than an excitement. Raising your family should be your priority, we will be here when you are wanting to share. Hugs- Sandra

  89. One of the reasons I liked your blog was that there was new content constantly. But I had noticed it was starting to be less of you and more guest posts. Personally I prefer your posts, it's why I visit your blog! So if you can't post daily, you can't. I personally can't commit to that myself. I didn't want to stop blogging, and hated that I posted so erratically so I announced a schedule. I post every Monday, with the exception of this past month. I actually decided I needed a break to re-group as I was traveling too much. So I'm going to take a yearly "vacation" in the future. No shame in taking a break when you need one. Especially if it enables you to keep doing what you love!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Congratulations on 6 years of blogging. I found you shortly after your basement flood and you created a "Cloffice". I have read each post at least once and usually more than once. You turn out more interesting content in a week than the shelter magazines do each month. Actually, when you took on the one room challenge, I thought, "oh, dear". I didn't think there was any way you could pull it off.

Some ideas: Revive an old but popular post from the past each week or every other week. Break down those huge posts into several smaller posts. They are incredibly detailed and probably more than one person can absorb in a sitting. Keep us wanting more. "What would Jen do" would be fantastic. Just make sure that they aren't too labor intensive on your part.

Love, love, love your blog and the fact that you live in a realistic sized house and make it work. Blog on a schedule that works for you. If you only can blog twice a week, so be it. Take care of yourself first.

  92. Happy Blogiversary!

Don't be too hard on yourself! After all, your kiddos and hubby (and your sanity) should always come first! None of what happens in this space will matter in the end, if you miss out on living life! I love gleaning ideas from you, but like others have said, I am definitely not disappointed when I don't see a big project post every day, or even multiple times a week!

I don't have children yet, and I think sometimes that MY life is crazy...I can't even fathom how you manage to find time to "do to it all". I love all of the ideas you have for going forward. Do what you love to do, in the time that you allot to doing it, and just ignore the whiners ;) You don't need that kind of negativity!

  93. Hi Jen. I have been following you for about 5 years. I love your blog. The reason I love your blog is because of you. I do enjoy when you have guest posts as it can give me a different idea. Just because the title includes 'Organizing' doesn't mean you can't post about other things such as fashion or food. How about favorite finds covering anything. Clothes, food, boys stuff. I also love when you round up things from pinterest. It expands my blog viewing and ideas. At the end of the day I read your blog for a variety of reasons. And whether you post just organizing or more or 1 or 5 times a week, I will continue to follow you.

  94. I also offer my congratulations on 6 years of blogging. I just want to let you know that I appreciate your transparency in sharing how you feel about your blogging and everything else right now. I like your blog posts a lot, and as a fellow blogger like the way your blog looks and feels. I have similar problems but do not have the following you have, so hence not the same pressure you must feel to put something out continuously. I believe that if you allow yourself time away from this, or a slower pace, you will be able to tap into whatever it is that will be satisfying for you in terms of blogging, organizing, your home and family. Wishing you much peace and happiness.

  96. Congratulations on six years! I have never commented on a blog before, but wanted to today because I appreciate you and what you do! You are the very first blog I started reading about four years ago and I've been hooked ever since. I have constantly gone back to the blog for ideas, products and items you suggest and have taken on several of the projects you have shared. You are inspiring and real. I am sure this will be redundant to many of the other comments, but I just wanted to say you need to do what is right for you and what works for you and your family. You have given so much to the blog and shared so much of your home and yourself with us and the amount of time and energy that goes into it is unimaginable to me! As a reader, I will admit I am always disappointed when there is not a new post, not because I think you should have a new post, but because you inspire me and I always look forward to what you have to share. And if there is no new post, I just look at old posts again! Your readers will support you no matter what direction you choose to go in and we will continue to love what you share and will support whatever decisions you make in the future. You take care of yourself Jen, that is more important than anything else! Thank you for inspiring me everyday.

  100. You could be a virtual organizer? It would be an interesting offering to me, small and more affordable one-on-one guidance where you look at a messy unorganized space and help the client through it. All through email or skype? Just a thought. Hiring a professional organizer can get expensive, and sometimes you don't have time and money to tackle a big project.

  101. Over the years, as a blog reader, I've noticed other blogs become pressured to keep up and in the end those are the blogs that I've lost interest in! It is too easy to tell when a post is written with love vs. just to add another post that week. I actually really love it when blogs DON'T post so often because then I can keep up with reading them :) Your blog is one that I have read since almost the beginning and I truly love it. All the changes you mentioned and goals you have sound great. Take the time you need and find a way to keep your passion- Happy Blogiversary!

  103. One of your best posts, ever! You are one of only 3 or 4 blogs I check regularly because you have stayed true to yourself, and haven't given in to the whole crazy of every other word is an affiliate link or sponsored post. I know that what I read from you is 100% genuine. My favorite part is that you share everything - not just the "pretty" finished product. You are a real person with real feelings, and when you choose to share that, you let your readers be real people too! I love it! Thanks!

  104. Congratulations on 6 years! I was just thinking recently that the blog seems to have leaned towards DIY house projects. Your taste is beautiful! It sounds like many people like what got them here to begin with.......organizing/tips etc. My favorite is sill the idea of Ikea hanging cups for pens/pencils! Please don't feel like you need to produce huge projects for your readers! If we were chatting over a cup of coffee I would say, think about what made you start, what made you happy? I Heart Organizing......sounds like it started with your love of organizing. Love your idea of products or ideas that catch your eye. Sometimes the simplest tip/idea is actually the best.....the ones where your reader says: "oh, why didn't I think of that". Having a husband and my boys in sports, I Totally understand you need to be with your family......I would rather see some time in between posts.....simplify and it will fall into place. Good luck with finding the right balance for you!

  106. Hopefully this isn't a repeat I don't think my comment went through. Hey Jen congrats on 6 great years. Although I haven't been able to read as often this year I appreciate that you haven't strayed from your original vision: organizing and the home. The blog market is extremely saturated but I feel that you are definitely my go to organizing blog. I can understand blogger burn out and thought I would offer a suggestion as a reader. How about an advice column/post once a week where readers send in their organizational questions and concerns and photos if need be and you offer your best advice up? This might take the pressure of projects and other readers may be able to identify with the persons question/space etc. just a thought, I hope you'll take into consideration and actually made it through reading this long comment. Happy anniversary.

  107. Jen, I've been following your blog for a few years now. I love it, and love following along your adventure. I love seeing your work features in magazines. That is due both to your talents and the reality you present on your blog.
I miss your coffee chat posts, and I miss the honest open posts about some of the challenges you face along the way to making the magic you create. I think you have a good core of readers who follow because we like you just as much as we like your work. There are many types of readers and many types of blogs. Please don't allow people to push you into being something that is not a good fit for you.
I now have a lap full of kids so I'll sign off. Please just put on the blog what pleases you and see where it goes. I'm sure you will keep most of us as readers. Anyone who wants something else will and should look somewhere else.
Xoxo and thanks for all of the awesome inspiration! I kept thinking "what would Jen do" at IKEA today. :)

  108. This is my first time posting on your blog, but I have followed for years. I love your blog because I enjoy your personality. I find that many of my organizing challenges are cyclic: the school year starts, seasons (and therefore the outdoor gear) changes, the holidays happen, etc. I think you should consider re-posting some of your content. It is hard to find it by looking back through the blog. I also think just re-posting it, followed by a then-and-now post would work well. There is so much great content already here, and I know that I would .

I don't know why I am disclosing this, but I have also had a really hard year. A major move, a new job, a new baby, the death of my mother, a miscarriage at 10 weeks (yes, even with the baby)...all of these things happened in the past year. The only thing that has made it okay was that I switched from a really high pressure/high performance lifestyle to something that is more sustainable. I hope you can find what works for you. We women and mothers can be so hard on ourselves, especially with a professional career on the line. Hugs! Your work is fantastic! And it will continue to be even if you slow it waaay, waaay down.

  109. Seriously, your blog is great. I don't think any of your readers mind if the frequency is a bit less. The quality has been so good, we just wait for whatever gets dished up, and enjoy it as it comes! :) WWJenDo is a great idea. I actually really like posts about spaces that are not your own as well. I think you push yourself outside your normal decorating boundaries which is fun to see. I would read a brief post about... what novels you are reading...what tea you like to drink while you read...what workout clothes you like and why...what brand of backpacks you buy your kids (cause I bet they are awesome, knowing you). Stuff like that - more "lifestyle" than just strictly organizing - you honestly have a blog CHOCK FULL of such great ideas, if I have questions, I just reference those old posts. Just some thoughts. Maybe you "review" a vacation you took with family? Talk about how you balance your kids' extracurricular activities/time etc? You are like a "how to live your life" maven, tell us all about it! :D Try to rest, relax, and seek balance. You aren't beholden to your blog readers, we are happy to enjoy the fruits of your labor! Take care of yourself and your loved ones, and we will be here to read whatever you can share!! Happy 6 years!

  110. The good news about there being more blogs out there, is that most of us follow several blogs so that is fine if they don't all post all the time... we are sprinkled with posts daily through following several. You're great, you have great taste, and you help me with tips even I can do in my chaotic life. I really prefer the less frequent posts about actual stuff than the daily posts about nothing. I am all for bloggers getting paid through ads but some of them are getting so hard to read because all the ads take so long to load. There needs to be a balance between having ads but not so many that it becomes reader unfriendly. I feel impatient when the scrolling feature is frozen while everything loads.

  111. Hi Jen,

I love all your posts, but I especially love the small ones. With little kids of my own, I'm at the point in my life where, if I can organise where I keep the toilet paper so the kids don't streamer the house with it, it's a momentous occasion.

I find your blog immensely inspiring and I will keep coming back even if you were to post once a fortnight. You are on my forever list.

    Cheers, Kate xx

  112. Thank you so much for your honesty!! My heart sank a little at first because I thought this might be a "breakup" post, and I'm so relieved it's not! After losing Young House Love, I couldn't bear to lose you too! I would so much rather see fewer posts than have you continue at this pace, burn out, and quit. I'd like to echo the sentiments of another reply about contributors - I don't think it's absolutely necessary to use guest bloggers as fillers. Not that I don't think your team is talented, it's just that I come to your blog for your talent, and there's no one quite like you! I hope I don't seem critical or negative in saying this - I don't mean to be. I guess what I'm trying to say is I don't mind going stretches of time without new posts, as long as I know you'll be back eventually! As far as ideas for content, I'd love to see some planner related posts, like how you organize and use yours. I'm still hoping to hear how your Kiki k planner has been working for you. Thank you so much for 6 years of fantastic blogging! I truly hope you're able to find the balance you're looking for!

  114. Congrats on blogging for six years! I realised this fall I've been blogging foreiht--and it really is a long time.

I love your projects--they are so gorgeous. But what I really appreciate are the "coffee chat" posts. What you learned doing the ORC was helpful to me. (I've taken on three, finished one, was late with one and became utterly overwhelmed and behind with another.) So, I appreciate the personal!

I'd LOVE wwjendo posts! For me, the interesting part of organizing is the thinking it through. It's coming up with the solution to the problems...that's where I see creativity. More thinking it through type posts would be great, too.

You know, you could also just update us every Friday with what's happening with the renovations.

Take care of yourself. I want you to stick around another six years!

  116. Jen Happy Blogiversary!!!
Yours was the first blog I ever read. I love when you humanize your posts as in what worked and what failed. Sometimes we only get to see the perfect ending and I know during my organizing and remodeling fits I always hit snags.
I'm also someone who thinks I would rather read your content than someone else's. I thought the self tanner post was really weird for your blog. To me it came out of left field. I am totally ok with you posting less to fit in your "real" life. Please don't go the way of fashion posts, or travel posts. I'm looking for DIY posts and those don't fit the bill.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Jen, I rarely post comments, but I wanted to let you know I LOVE your blog and I learn so much from it! I'm naturally organized, but I don't have the talent of making things pretty the way you do, so you inspire me. I also love the personality that shines through your posts. You know what my (humble) opinion is? Burnout is not worth it (been there...). Just post whenever you have something you feel is post-worthy. You don't need to post every week. We'll still be here. I appreciate bloggers who focus on remarkable content rather than bloggers who post just to post (I tend to unsubscribe when I receive multiple posts a week that have little value). If you need to slow down your posting frequency for your sanity, just do it. You won't be letting us down.

  118. Congrats on 6 years! As a mom of 6, I totally understand struggling to find balance. I'd rather see fewer of your posts than none at all. Your's is the only blog I follow on a weekly basis. I agree with some of the other suggestions-- more conversational posts, how you're finding your balance, the "then and now" idea, and I LOVE that you have guest bloggers. I love that your projects always inspire me to take a second look at what I already have and repurpose it rather than always spending money on the newest "it" thing. I'd love to see more of your re-do's like the dorm room -- since we all have different living/family/home situations, I'm excited to see even more fabulous ideas that might work better for me. Enjoy your celebration of 6 years -- you've earned it!

  119. I have been a long-time reader but I haven't ever commented. But I have to say that you have been a success with every post because I was inspired by every one! I would love to see how some of your most popular spaces are now, what worked long term and what didn't. I also loved when you held the link-ups. Everything you do is fabulous! You're awesome!

  120. Congratulations on your six years! Your blog is awesome! Before I discovered I Heart Organizing in a Better Homes and Gardens magazine ("She hearts organizing") I actually thought I was pretty organized!! But your blog has taken me a whole other level that continues to teach and inspire! Anytime I'm about to tackle a project I go to your blog and search through your past posts or project for inspiration. I love all that you do!!

  121. I think your blog is great and I love the "what would jen do" idea. I also think that though it doesn't have to do with organizing per se, blogging about family life with your boys would be just as fun to read! I have gotten many fun family hang out ideas from your Instagram! I have two boys and I'm always looking for fun boy hang out ideas! Whatever direction you decide to take, I'm sure it will be great! Congrats on 6 years! And enjoy that wine girl!! 🍷🍷

  122. Hello Jen. Congratulations on your anniversary. So glad to hear you arent giving up on blogging. Whew!
I really enjoy your ideas, style, and projects and they keep me coming back again and again. Your blog is my first read and my go to site for organizing. Your posts are so inspiring and I must say that while I enjoy the big reveals, its those little projects for real life trouble spots that truly make my heart skip. Its these projects that really make the connection for me as a reader. Take breaks as needed, and rest assured your readers are hanging in there right by your side.

  123. I love your work and so look forward to the beauty and creativity you share! My life is in chaos, and you have given me colorful, organized things to look at. Calming. Gives me ideas! I hope I can incorporate them in our home. Thank you and Happy Anniversary of your Blog ;)

  124. Jen, I love your take on things--especially the bright, cheerful beauty that you have inspired me to add to my organizing projects, both large and small (I used to think organizing was all about Tupperware and manila file folders, LOL). FWIW, I think every one of the ideas you outlined to make your blog more manageable are not only great ideas, they will add even more depth to your blog's dimension. Please don't worry about diluting the blog with your new approaches; there are a million resources we can go to for plain old vanilla organizing (and even not-so-vanilla), but we love your personal take on things and your special Jen tone. We readers will be happy if you do what you need to do so you own the blog rather than the blog owning you. You've already found so many ways to reach out and touch us and my bet is you will not lose one single reader and even stand to gain some from your new ideas. Take care of yourself first, set some limits, and explore ways to recapture your joy in what you do; we'll still be here.

Now if only we could figure out a virtual way to just sit down and have a cup of tea with you once in awhile!

Thank YOU for all you do to brighten our lives..

  125. Jen, I love this blog. You do it all, so I'm not surprised you feel this way. It makes me sad in a way - I enjoy it so much, I feel bad you don't feel the same way. I think a lot of the possibilities you mentioned would be a great read, not to mention a great help. The reason we read this blog is to get organized, get things pretty. Why not have a conversation about that?!? I"d love that! There's no way in the world I'd be able to do all the projects you do, and I'd be willing to bet there's not a reader out there who has duplicated every project you've done, soo don't feel the pressure to keep it up. You can't be all things to all people. I actually loved your suggestion about moving things around the house, redecorating. I've often thought on other blogs, where do they get the money to keep making ALL that stuff, and where on earth does all of it go?!? They must be hoarders! LOL. I'd love suggestions about "shopping" in my own house, switching things up. This is a DIY blog too, so that suggests we are all interested in saving a bit of money too. Overall, I'll continue to read this as long as you are happy, and I'll gladly do it once every few days, once a week, once a month, whatever. But please know that your work is appreciated, at least by me!!!

  126. Happy Blogiversary!! Very exciting!! In regards to future content, I love all of the new ideas you have! I know the blog world is changing, I'm struggling to keep my little corner of the www up to speed so, I can imagine how it feels running a bigger, more present blog. But, stay true to yourself, your needs & most importantly your families needs. If that means you only post a few times a week, or less, then that's ok! For me, I would rather see quality over quantity anytime - and that goes for all blogs that I read. There's so much that I love about your blog so, please don't go away any time soon!! :)

  127. I've been following you for a while now and have copied many of your ideas, thought mine aren't quite as pretty as yours. I wonder, as your boys grow up, how do you see the playroom evolving? I don't know their ages, but they won't be playing with trains and Play-Doh forever. What does the playroom become? Also, any tips on how to have a garage sale? Sara

    1. Hi Sara! The boys let me know that they want a "man cave" for having friends over, playing board games, eating snacks and watching movies. So I am planning to swap spaces with them and give them my office and I am taking over the playroom with the window. :D It will be a good move for all of us, we are all pretty pumped about the planned changes.

And it has been awhile since I have had a garage sale, but here is a post covering some of my tips from our last one: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2011/06/project-purge-organized-garage-sale.html

      xoxo!

  128. I just want to say your blog is one of the first blogs I started following about 1.5 years ago and still love. I can tell you put your all into your projects and create beautiful and functional spaces. I can only imagine how hard it would be to come up with multiple projects each week and carry them out. Your photos are lovely and so are you! I would love to hear about your day and how you organize your time, your favorite products (organizing and everyday items) and any little tips or tricks. I will continue to read your blog even if you don't post every week 😊
    Thanks!

  129. Jen,

I don't comment nearly as often as I once did, or should for that matter, but I had to respond to this heartfelt post. Firstly, happy blogoversary! I have been following since the beginning and realizing it is 6 years now makes me feel so old. . . Lol! I completely understand about feeling burnt out, and I think as you are seeing from others comments, we don't want that for you. This should be fun for you, the fact that it isn't right now is a major red flag that you do need to make changes. Do what is right for YOU and your family , because frankly that is all that matters in the end. I think you have helped o many of us, inspired so many of us, and I hope that brings you some comfort, but you need to take care of YOU. I only follow a few blogs regularly anymore (yours of course being one of them) because I have bailed for video content and moved to YouTube and now Periscope. That is the problem with social media, it keeps evolving and it is exhausting to try to keep up, especially for those who create content. I am no longer blogging and I don't miss it, but I hope you will continue, even if your posts are less frequent. I love the idea of Ask Jen, and someone else mentioned the idea of just chatting with us, which I think is great. Frankly YOU are why we come, there are plenty of o,aces we can get organizing or DIY ideas, but we love you!

Hugs and prayers for your future,
    Maureen

  130. Hi Jen,

I have read your blog for a few years and have never left a comment. However, this post also resonates with me. I totally support you in taking time away to refresh and refocus. I hope you can find peace and get excited again about the blog and what you are passionate about. I always appreciated your sunny outlook and pretty projects, but I also realize that takes a lot of time. Thank you for being honest with us. I wish you the best of luck as your approach this new season in your blog.

  131. I think your thoughts are very honest and very relatable--the very things that drew me to your blog and has kept me coming back. Thank you for sharing.
In terms of what you might post in the future, I like the idea of answering questions with what you would do, and also "reviewing" organizational tips from magazines--only if the critique is honest--sometimes I feel like the organizational tips in magazines aren't practical and would be impossible to maintain. I think an honest critique of those articles would be great.

  133. Jen, I subscribe to your blog and appreciate every post. (I blog too, and know it takes tons more time than anyone can imagine.) i hope you keep on blogging in wharever form it takes. Tips, other people makeovers... I was sooo impressed with the dorm room set up, for example, that I hope you do start an orgainizing business because you will succeed! Gotta tell you, I found you through your washi tape/label maker post, so the small tips really do matter! Xoxoox to you.

  134. Congrates on 6 years! I think you have done an amazing job and sharing what works and what doesn't (the follow up is awesome!). The planner community is big that I understand that the shop could give you some income as well as pleasure. Keep on doing what feels good to you!

  135. Jen! I love your blog and what you do, there would be a big hole in the blogging world if you left it. I don't say that to pressure you but to let you know how much you do for so many of us. Regardless this is your corner of the bloggy universe and I'd encourage you (like so many others) to do whatever makes you happy!! That's first and foremost. I love reading your posts each and every different one and will continue to even if you change the direction!! I hope this next year is your best yet! Xo

  136. I'm a loyal lurker, but since I read on my phone on the train, I don't comment. I'm sorry for that!

I hope you can find a balance that works for you. I had no idea you were doing projects just for the blog. That does sound exhausting! I hope that you don't feel obligated to continue that.

I love the advice column idea. I think that may be less time (maybe?). It may also help some of us who love to organize but aren't nearly as talented at finding solutions.

Your other ideas seem fun as well. I feel confident that people would pay for your assistance as an in-home consultant, if that's something that interested you. You may even be able to blog about those experiences as well! I bet we would all find them inspiring, if it happened to work out that way.

It does seem like the blogging world has become a little less fun for those on the inside, so while I hope you continue and I'll read whatever you post, I would prefer that you keep your sanity and post fewer times per week or month than totally dropping out. But if you decide that moving on is what's best for you and your family, then I'll certainly miss your inspiring ideas and will wish you nothing but good thoughts and wishes.

Good luck as you consider your next steps!

    Warmly,
    Emily

  138. I can still remember when I friend sent me a link to your blog and I was all, I know what I'm doing for the rest of the day. I marvel at how you do all that you do, and am so grateful to be along for the ride. You've inspired so much in me--I'm sure I could look around my home and point out several solutions that I picked up from you. Whatever the future holds, I'm so thankful that you'e shared so much of yourself on this blog--give yourself a pat on the back because here's a girl from Canada telling you that you've made a tremendous difference in the organization of my home and life. Congratulations!

  139. I stopped reading a very popular blog 18 months ago - 6 months before it ended. So I know burnout is real. Whittled my blog reading down to about 4-5, and yours made the cut. You are still genuine, honest, and open. There are a few others out there too. It shows, and counts for more than you know. Thank you for your work and honesty! Happy 6th anniversary!

  140. Hi Jen! I don't have time to read all the comments, but I wanted to share that I have been an avid reader of your blog for several years. I would much rather that my favorite bloggers post less vs. not at all. I am very glad to hear that you are feeling the tug of your sweet family and just needing to be with them and in your home. As much as all of us love you, they are the ones that are going to benefit the most from having a happy, sane mommy! :) Your posts have been SO inspirational and proof that I can get the gorgeous look that I want with a little bit of effort. Thank you for all of your efforts and helping us make the world beautiful, one drawer at a time! :)

  145. What have I always wanted to see? The real you, mistakes or messes included. On the rare occasions you do these "let me be honest here; I feel pressured to present only the perfect" posts, I always think, "But I don't want perfect. I want YOU."

Yes, your photos and projects are beautiful and inspiring, but if beautiful and inspiring were all I wanted, I'd be spending my time on Pinterest. What I want is you—things you're excited about, things you regret, opinions you have, photos of your space that sometimes aren't tidied for the camera (with no apologies or excuses!)… doses of reality, basically. Your content has been amazing and inspiring so far, but sometimes the broken is just as beautiful and inspiring as the perfect. Don't be afraid of showing both sides. You are never a failure unless you stop being true to yourself.

I think you put way more pressure on yourself than you need to. Be you! Haters are gonna hate no matter what you do, so don't let them sway you. They will eventually leave. But your followers will love you all the more for being true to yourself.

You also mentioned maybe doing more quick tips. I love those! Mainly because your brain works differently than mine. It's nice to have new ideas to spruce up my house or lifestyle that I wouldn't have otherwise thought of, but are so "duh!" in retrospect. For example, that tip about packing your suitcase by putting everything in laundry mesh bags was a game changer for me! And that's just one example of many.

Anyway, be you. That's all we really want. Don't kill yourself over protecting your professional face/mask. Be authentic and we'll love you 'til the end, pearls or warts and everything in between.

  146. Not a regular commenter, but you've often inspired me. Is It helpful when I say It's the simple and small projects that I like best? We all have drawers or cupboards that can use a make-over, where fewer of us can relate to the big home reno projects. Not that I don't like reading about them, but it's different. I really missed the lighter posts, the ones that made me want to drop anything I was doing and start organizing a little part of my home. I'm wondering why you're hanging on to three posts a week? I for one would be more than happy with one post (or less) a week if it prevents you from stopping blogging altogether! Cheers to six years of inspirational blogging and to peacefully enjoying your home!

  147. Congratulations from a long time reader! Like many commenters before, I would rather fewer posts than none at all. As for content, I really enjoy hearing about other mom's daily routines and time management :)

    ReplyDelete
  148. I love the posts where you do more with less (like the round mirror that you made from a serving tray). In the same line, posts about small changes that make a big impact are also favorites (like just cleaning out a drawer).

The reader before-photo and your take on it is an awesome idea!

I hope you keep finding joy and excitement and fulfillment from sharing with us, because I <3 this blog!

  149. Your post echoes the sentiment of so many who have been blogging for some time. I am only at the very beginning with my little blog, still trying to find my direction, a system to make it work as something that both I and my readers can enjoy and appreciate for a long time to come. I have a lot of work ahead of me. And as a relative newbie blogger, I appreciate your honest account very much. I hope your blog remains right here for a long time to come. Don't worry, your readers will still be here waiting for you! Good luck!

  150. I can appreciate the honesty in your writing. It is very genuine and that's why I keep coming back to your blog. Keep up the great work! The burn out will come through in your writing so only post when it's fun and your excited about the content. Don't feel guilty! Fans will continue to come back for more! Best wishes..

  151. Love your blog. Read it a lot to get more tips on organizing.

Love readers space which I can have more of. And more different kind of rooms. A lot of what you select is similar to your own taste. I guess that most people that read you have similar taste. But it would be fun with some organization that do different things. I don't know what that would be but it would be fun.

I don't usually go to blogs for the pictures. I want to know how they did this or that. I would say spend less time on photo editing and more on the chatting part :-)

I would also want different angles in some of the rooms. Much focus is on before and after pictures that most blogs forgets about the other angles. Which is a pity.

I would not complain if you had some garden stuff or more kids stuff but what you eat or if you bake a cake I think yo could leave out :-)

Project plans are also very fun. What you will do in the future if you have an inspiration board for that. The breakdown of the work. The planning process. A lot of blogs are doing this inspiration pictures and I think it is a pity. Those are usually not that fun. If those are not to be used in a project that you are planning or doing. Then it is totally ok!

Moodboards and readers dilemmas is excellent stuff for blogs! And I do like the small updates. Like you had a post on how to fix the light fixture cords in the kitchen with pipes. Gold!

I think I just miss that chatting part of blogs. The more familiar feeling. I hope you continue your work! Love to read more!

  152. So glad you're not leaving us! You have inspired me in so many ways to make changes around my home. For instance, I have a lot of jewelry, most of it vintage because that is what I love. I have a large jewelry chest that just wasn't cutting it because a lot of the necklaces are large and chunky. I now have a cork board covered in pretty fabric in my closet with my necklaces hung on it so I can actually see what I have and I'm wearing more of it. Guess where that idea came from? I've checked out a lot of blogs but only read 2 and yours is one of them because you are genuine. You love what you do and it shows. Take the time you need to figure out how you want to move forward. Gloria

  154. Hi Jen .. I only recently discovered your blig nut have to say I am in great need if a organizing makeover both my house and my life .. I'm a single parent with two busy teens and working full time so we seem to be on the go all the time. Quite shocked that you feel you must post 'project posts' frequently. Truly, I don't have time to often read multiple posts per week as I doubt most of your readers do either. Give yourselves a break and no reason why you can't relax more and post less, plus post less projects. It's more the organizing posts I need to read or the 'how to' posts, not the projects. Give me some ideas in the basics of organizing or repost a project you did and write about it as a 'how to' of organizing. Love the 'what would Jen do' idea as well. Whatever your balance is, your family is first - don't feel compelled to post daily or even three times a week. Down time is so important and I can't imagine you've had too much of that for awhile. It's not the project posts that drew me here, it's your organizing ideas and your ideas on how we can all make our houses pretty!

  155. Your blog was the first blog I ever read and have no steered away since. Whether you do one post a day or one post a month I am still as intrigued and inspired as ever. 161. Congratulations! I don't usually comment but your blog is one of the very few I read on a regular basis. I love your honesty, your creativity and your love and use of color (something I am afraid to try too much on my own). I have always wondered how do you do so much all the time!? I have been reading your blog for about 2 years and often find that your blog inspires me to re-think how things are being done in my house and I can't wait for a few free minutes to organize something! I also find I am often searching your older posts for your answers. Maybe you could you a "Flashback Friday" once or twice a month to some of your older favorite organizing posts. I found your blog because I was looking for organizing answers and while I find the larger projects you do to be inspiring and beautiful, they don’t usually work for my life right now. I love a simple organizing solution and your Tuesday tips were great. While looking at the pictures in this post I thought oh I would love to re-read about that. Maybe for some of us newer readers you could bring back some of your older but no less wise posts. I find that even if I read a post a while ago when I read it now again my life is different and the tips/tricks I pick up are a little different. If you are comfortable I love your personal style and would love to see some fashion posts or posts about how you manage running a house with 3 active kids and crazy schedules, more of the day to day. I like the idea of you organizing outside your home too, I got some great ideas from the dorm room post, even though I haven’t been in a dorm in a long long time! Please keep blogging even if it is not so often, you are inspiring to many of us even if we do not comment may often. Thank you!

  162. Jen, I LOVE your blog. It has inspired me in so many ways, it's not even funny. Balance in life is one of the things we Americans have such a hard time with, but you need to find it before you completely burn out. I've seen lots of great ideas in the comments for things you can do to keep "authentic" content without driving yourself insane. Just remember: write about what YOU love, and the readers will follow. Once a week Jen > no Jen at all!!

    ReplyDelete
  163. Thank you for being so honest and letting us in to your struggles. One of the things I love about your blog is YOU and your sweet and funny personality. I keep coming back not only because of your projects and posts, but because I'm just interested in you, your house and your family! I hate to think you're burning yourself out because of we demanding readers, so I hope you can find the right balance for yourself. The "what would Jen do?" posts sound great to me, and I'm sure lots of other readers would be helped by those as well. I have also loved your "Quick Tip Tuesday" posts and have used many of the ideas. I don't mind contributor posts, some I love and some I don't, and that's ok. I love the posts that feel like coffee with a friend where we get to know you more. If you ever wanted to take an organizing break and post about something else- a trip, an event, fashion (you seem very fashionable), I think you should try it! The other blog I read is Centsational Girl, and she often does off-topic posts like that. Why not? Do what makes you happy! All that said, you have really helped me change my home over the years to become more functional, pretty, and clean. And that help has likely been mostly in the form of the smaller posts, not the huge makeover project posts. Thank you for all your hard work! But ease up on yourself now! Your loyal readers will stick with you!

  164. You've inspired me! Here is one small example: three years ago I read your entry-way blog (http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.ca/2011/09/happy-and-organized-entry.html) and loved the IKEA shoe cabinet you used.

We immediately purchased ours, and I have said at least 100 times to my husband: "of all the things we have done to the house, or purchased, that has to be the absolute best thing that we did!" Thanks to you, my normally cluttered front entry has been a thing of organized beauty for three years.

Again, just a small example, but it has made a big impact!

    ReplyDelete
  165. Congrats on 6 years!! You're doing such an amazing job! I was just telling my husband yesterday how I wish I could be like you. You are such an inspiration and are constantly inspiring me to organize and make things beautiful. You are my favorite blogger and I always look forward to your posts. I wish we were friends and you could come help me with some of my projects. It can get overwhelming in figuring out how to make a space functional and cute, but you achieve it so flawlessly.

  166. Congrats on the anniversary! It sounds like a bitter-sweet time for you.....I can TOTALLY relate.

I was in the same boat as you this summer. Not as a blogger, but as an agency writer. I was approaching my 10 years workiversary. For most people, this is a big milestone (because, really, who even stays in a job for more than 2 years nowadays?).

But, for me, I was unhappy, unhealthy, not motivated and burnt out. In fact, at the end of 2014, I became very ill from all of the stress (I got mono) and was on leave for 3 months to recover.

During my recovery time, I thought I could just "buck it up" and continue on.....I convinced myself that I wasn't burnt out and that I could keep going. After all, I had 3 months "off".....surely I could go back at it guns-a-blazin'.

    And, I did.

And, I was even more miserable than before.

But, I kept going on thinking that it wasn't my time yet to make a move - to expand my horizons and move on to a new opportunity that was refreshing, exhilarating and new.

Well, the universe has a funny way of working and, in August, I was given a severance package and a "it's not you, it's us" speech. My job was restructured and I was out of work after 10 years in my job.

    And, guess what?

    I was relieved!

    And, scared.

But, really truly relieved. It was the push I needed to gain better balance in my life.

That was mid-August. As we approach October, I'm still working through the feelings that come with losing a job, but overall, I'm in such a better place. I've had time to reconnect with my family and smell the roses. I'm not saying no to park visits with my toddler because I have time. We're doing more fun things as a family because that big, grumpy, heavy monkey of an unfulfilling job is off my back. I'm sleeping well, experiencing energy and motivation once again. The world is my oyster, really.

The reason I shared this story with you is because I see a lot of myself in your post. The last year of my life sounds similar to yours. And, I just want you to know that everything will be okay. You're taking the time to re-evaluate your life and see where you want to take your business and personal lives. You are in the drivers seat - you can DESIGN the LIFE you WANT.

You will be successful with or without your blog. You have the gusto and skill to do well. Look at Sherry and John from YHL - stepping away from their blog was actually a really great business decision for them. They are thriving one year later. Whatever you choose to do, you will rise to the top too!

Wishing you all the best in this new journey of discovery that you are on.

  167. I have read your blog faithfully for a couple years now, and I really appreciate the honesty of this post. As much as I love your projects and photos and creativity, it's also reassuring to know that you are also a mom/wife/friend/etc. struggling to balance it all. I identify with that struggle so very much. I appreciate a blogger who shows what it's really like "behind the scenes" and writes about the failures and struggles, along with the victories. So take the time you need, post less, whatever you need to do to find a better balance in all of it. I am sure your posts will be all the better because you took the time to invest in the most important project of all: yourself.
