32 May Challenge: Project "Projects" {Boy's Bedroom - Part 5}

Do you ever find yourself working on something and then all the sudden you are singing a song that completely fits into what you are doing?  Like your own personal life soundtrack?  No?  I am probably all alone here in crazy town...  but alone or not, right now I am singing, "This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine", so plug those ears!

Because I am great about stating the obvious, the song absolutely means that we did something "light" related.  Who wants to start guessing?!

That little light of mine, really wasn't shining.  It was majorly dull and boring and typical.  This was a major must fix and it took me a really long time to finally decide on a new fixture for the boys, but I ultimately went with this one from CB2.

Love love love it.  Like a lot.  And I couldn't wait to have the hubs install it.  I mean, I REALLY couldn't wait, so I didn't.....

I had full intentions of having the entire light "installed", but when I dug through the box, it had a cord kit and not much more.  The last thing I wanted was a dangling light for the boys to use as a target or to attempt to swing/hang on.  I was hoping for a more flush look, so my brain wheels started spinning and I thought that just maybe, I could just remove the original light cover and replace it with this one, using the hardware from the original one.  Oh please please please work.

And it did!  Seriously, two minute light switcharoo!  Whew!  And once again, the hubs got out of a project.  Win win for all!

The new, "beefier" light fixture really makes SUCH a huge impact in the space.  It feels so much more finished and pulled together, even without the large map on the wall or the extra plush bedding I want to add someday....

A view from the bed?  Off....

And on...

Fantastical!

And for you REALLY observant folks, another giant change was made to the space.  It was giant in person, not so giant in photographs so you will absolutely have to trust me here...

In the last post I mentioned that I was on the hunt for some box springs to give the beds a boost.  The most generous and sweet reader, who lives nearby, emailed me that very day and said she had an extra twin box spring that she was planning on getting rid of, so her loss could be my totally free gain if I was interested.  Talk about feeling like I just won the lottery!  Not just because of the new box spring, but because I have such incredibly thoughtful and kind readers.  You all have no idea how you impact my days, each and every day.  Taking a moment to read my random words, taking time to be thoughtful, taking time to comment and write!  I getting warm and giddy all over just thinking about it!

So, after baseball practice we headed out to meet Susan and pick up the little guy's new box spring.  It was so fun to meet a reader in person!

When we got home and popped the new box spring on the one bed, and my "even" disorder got the best of me.  I went to our oldest son's bedroom and stole his box spring right out from under him and brought it into the other boy's bedroom see how the room would look with the newly added height.  {I sound meaner than I really am, my oldest was absolutely digging it because then he got to plop his mattress on the floor and apparently "that's totally cool!"}  The box springs were another room game changer.  Seriously!  It's all the little things that work together!

Here is a quickie before and after of the beds, pre-box spring and after.   Notice the height of the pillows on the headboard, it totally allows the pillows to offer additional softness to the stark silver beds!

Another the more dramatic light before and after:

Hopefully soon I will be writing up another post while singing this song:

Anyone else been switching out light fixtures and been totally in awe in the major impact they make on a space?  And come on, there has to be someone else that sings silly songs while they work?  Anyone?

I decided a little challenge would be fun! This month we are getting all those projects done!  Any project big or small counts!  Wanna join?  Take photos and blog about your awesomeness as you go!  I am hoping to do a giant, "We did it!" celebratory post where we can all link up our project completing success stories at the end of the month!

  3. I do. I sing along, when I happy. Or when I bright idea comes my way, which I call God-breezes(borrowed from Flylady). I thank you for sharing your boys bedroom project. I am very inspired to redo my kids room. Saving this one for the summer.

  6. The room looks fantastic. Yes, I always sing or listen to music when I work. I listen to the Glee soundtracks a lot, but I want you to know that since you mentioned singing silly songs-I spent the morning singing "Whistle while you work" while washing dishes. Thanks for that. My 11-year old son looked at me and said," Uh, okay mom." He is so much cooler than me. Have a great day and keep blogging, I read you every morning.

  12. I love the bedroom how on earth did you make such perfect lines on the wall?

I have been looking all winter for a red lamp shade and there it is in the blue bedroom. Did you happen to order this someplace or buy it at a major store?

  16. The whole room looks fantastic Jen, but knowing you, I'll be looking forward to the next change or addition.

Music is a big part of my life and I've made a feature out my "Housework Monday" routine and always feature a song that relates. Funny how I can find a song that relates to something as boring as housework! LOL

  21. I like what you did to the bedroom, have you ever painted light switch plates? That way they don't stand out so much in a room. (ruff them up,paint them, spray them w/laquer

  22. Love it! The stripes are gorgeous and just the perfect number! And begone, bellybutton light! We are in the process of eradicating those as well :) The room looks so fun, congrats on all your hard work!!

  23. YEP!! I do... I sing songs while finishing a project. Like every Christmas, while setting up my snow village, I sing... let it snow, let it snow, let it snow, while I sprinkle the little snow flakes. :) Love that you do the same thing. The new light is great!!

  25. The new light fitting looks fantastic in this room. I'm finding light fittings the hardest thing to decide on, so far I have only bought 1 but I have 5 rooms finished and waiting with bare bulbs for some shades! I just need to make a decision I guess!

  26. We rent and can't really decorate, but the very first thing we do anytime we move is change the light shades and curtains. that way it feels a more friendly 'us' space and we start to feel at home, even before we get pictures up or furniture in the right places. I hate when we are coming up to moving out and have to change them back to the ones provided again, the house feels cold and distant again.
