87 Basement Progress - Frame Update Part 2!

First, I just want to thank you for all of the kind and encouraging comments left on last week's first vlog!  I am already brainstorming future ideas and topics for more videos, so stay tuned!

So now you all know why the "studio" is so important to me at the moment.  I have a lot of catching up and moving forward to do with the blog, and I would like to do it in a place that inspires me!

I haven't done a ton in the studio zone yet, just some small things like organize my desk, create a coat hook and organize my craft stand.  Of course, each little project always matters and each one gets me another step closer to a happy and organized workplace, but the room needs some life.  Some color.  Some "Jen".  And after the project I did this weekend, I finally feel really excited about my new space!

Remember this pretty lady?

Well, in order for her to be a functioning inspiration pin board, a few final steps needed to happen.

First, I found a roll of cork at a local craft store for $10 after a 40% off coupon.  I couldn't find any the exact size I needed for the frame, but the roll was enough to cover the entire backing of the frame, it just needed to be cut down and pieced together.

I used a spray adhesive to stick the cork to the frames original backing:

When it came to the fabric that I was going to use for the giant pushpin frame, I really had a hard time just pulling the trigger and making a decision, until when I least expected it, it was right in front of me.  I had been pinning all sorts of colorful options on Pinterest and even considered some fun Dwell Studio tablecloth options I had scoped out from Target.

Then, I pinned a fantastic Thomas Paul rug one day when I was in ooh la la dream land, and an amazing reader commented that she had purchased the same pattern in a shower curtain at TJMaxx.  I had been looking all over for the Thomas Paul fabric, and couldn't seem to find anything less that $50 per yard.  So off to HomeGoods I went in search of the shower curtain mentioned by Emma {TJMaxx and HomeGoods are same same so I figured I would try the closest store first}.  Sure enough, I SCORED big time!

I couldn't wait to pop that beautiful pattern inside the pin board frame.  So I took it out of the package and started to iron it.

I instantly noticed that I could see my iron board cover through the thin shower curtain.  I was worried that the cork would also show through, and give it a yellow brown tint.  Thank goodness for an old scrap sheet that we used for the dog in the car once or twice.  It was white and perfect for cutting down and placing in-between the cork and the shower curtain!

I cried a little while cutting down the shower curtain to fit inside the frame, it felt weird cutting up something that was brand new and perfect.  But I knew it was for a good cause.  Plus, I had oodles of left over shower curtain that I am certain I can bribe someone to make me a pillow cover or two with!

Here you can see that I just stuck the cork board backing into the frame with the fabric wrapped around it.  I then flipped it over, pulled it very tight, stapled the backing back into the frame and cut down the edges of the shower curtain:

Once the original hanging hardware was screwed back in, up onto the wall the finished product went!!

And I L O V E it!!!

Of course, I had to bring in some yellow, the "dream" word art was found at Goodwill for $1.99 and I sprayed it down with yellow spray paint.

The word seemed fitting...

And the pink orchid is just too fabulous.  It was a recent birthday gift from my mother-in-law.  Does she know me or does she know me?

So now I have my gray blue, yellow, tealy turquoise and pink!  I can now say I am starting to feel at home in my new space!

And I just adore that when I look over, the new wall blends so well with the laundry room!

What do you think of the frame?  It's come a long way right?  From this:

Now I just need to get some pushpins and start pinning my ideas!  Oh, and maybe finally do something with that dresser....

  2. That's beautiful! And I LOVE using other sources for fabric (rather than just rolls of fabric) I've been using old shirts a LOT lately-- great way to repurpose!

  6. Old frames are the best painted. I always look out for roadside ones.
    Love your fabric find.

  10. Jen, it looks fantastic! I love the fabric. I do have one question though. I have used the roll out cork from the craft store before for the same purpoe, but found it wasn't thick enough for most ordinary tacks to stay in. Any solutions?

    1. I'm in the same boat. I did 2 home projects using a thin cork roll and I'm at a loss for finding any push pins small enough (and sharp enough) to actually use them. Wish I'd thought of that first and backed them with some cardboard or foam or something...

Anyone know where we can get or order online teeeeensy push pins? I'm thinking I'll try map pins, but even those seem too long.

  11. absolute perfection is what I think of it!!! NICE JOB Jen! I think you totally scored on the frame and the fabric to make the perfect combo! I've been dying to DIY a corkboard for my office... hopefully it'll happen soon! :)

  12. It looks wonderful!!! I love it!! I do have a question though, the corking on the roll is so thin, can you really use it as a cork board? It looks like the push pins will be so much longer then the thickness of the corking? Am I making an sence? lol

  13. I am in love with this!! I'm obsessed with that fabric. Great job!

  14. You inspired me!! that's for sure. I need one of these for my office. Something larger than what I have. love it!

  15. Looks great! After seeing the accessories and fabric I would DEFINITELY paint the dresser a turquoise...It would really make a beautiful "moment"!

  17. oh my god that looks AMAZING. the fabric is to die for!!!!!

  18. Thanks friends!

As far as the depth of the cork, it is on the slim side, but with the thick cardboard backing that stuck it on, I am hoping it will be OK. I just need to find thumb tacks that aren't extremely lengthy and I think it should all work out!

    xoxo,
    Jen

  19. LOVE IT!!! Now I am scrounging all of my old frames from my garage sale box and repurposing them (after spray painting them white)! Thanks for the inspiration!.....and this morning I got glass containers to use in my pantry!! whoot, whoot!! Gotta get back to organizing!!!!

  20. I love the shower curtain fabric! What a perfect fit! And, if you need someone to make you pillow covers, send me the fabric and I'll sen pillow covers back to you. That's what blog friends are for, right? And, I love the pops of yellow and pin. They tie in nicely with the laundry room rug. Nice work!

  21. Awesome! I love the fabric - great deal! I think it looks so nice against the wall, too. The pattern pops but the color doesn't pop too much so you can get away with more of the bright happy colors!

Still can't wait to see the dresser transformation!

  22. amazing! you have such great vision when it comes to design- I wish I possessed like 1/8th of it. Keep up the great blog, such a pleasure to read.

  24. I´d leave the dresser the way it is, it looks really sophisticated, especially with that gorgeous pinboard and the accessories on it!

    ReplyDelete
  25. It's wonderful...and all those scraps will surely become something wonderful too. you could always lay it down on a surface and cover with glass or modpodge it to an accessory you want covered.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The pinboard is beautiful!

That looks like a real orchid. Is there natural light in your basement? I thought not...

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Laurabeth!

It is a real orchid that I brought down to stage the dresser top and to see how the colors worked in the space. I know it can't stay due to the lighting, but I heart it SO much that now I am on the hunt for an almost as awesome artificial version! :)

    xoxo,
    Jen

  28. Wow! It looks fabulous!! That shower curtain print is so pretty and it looks like it was meant to be, as it looks perfect in that frame. Good score!!!

  29. LOVE the framed board. This may be over the top, but what about painting the dresser a dark brown (it would remove the grain lines and allow for a perfect match to the rug in the laundry room) or a sort of lighter shade of pumpkin orange. Just personal opinion, but I think the white may be too stark and the beautiful yellow dream carving is perfect. I really like the contrast of color between the board and the dresser. I am so excited for you to have it done!! I bet you are just busting!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gorgeous! I love it! And I especially love the pop of the yellow Dream!!!

  31. That looks beautiful Jen. I'm enjoying seeing your progress :o)

  32. I love it, it looks beautiful! I am def going to need to do a pin board like this when I set up my craft room! Love the dream word too!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Maybe the dresser should be painted the blue that you just covered your cork board with!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know what you mean about cutting up something brand new & perfect! We redid our kitchen last winter & I couldn't find the right curtains anywhere. Then Hubby actually found a tablecloth pattern that we thought was just perfect, so I cut it up to sew curtains!

  35. That fabric is B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L!!! I love it! This project turned out wonderful! I have the same idea in mind right now except I want to do magnet instead of cork!

  36. Oh Jen, your pin board looks amazing. I love the wood tone of your dresser. You gave it such a modern look with all of your cute accessories. Have you thought about just updating the handles? I bet that would completely change the look, and if you still don't like it you could always paint.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It looks so cute! You are not going to want to cover it up!

    ReplyDelete
  38. WOW! You just gave me inspiration to do the same thing. My kitchen has a huge bare wall and this would be perfect, thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love it, too! But my favorite part is the yellow dream word. I have that same piece. In bland beige. I'm thinking fushia. Or turquoise. Thanks for the inspiration!

  40. WOW! That looks amazing!!!!! I love your house, you have such gorgeous touches to it!! 46. Looks great! I didn't realize TJ Maxx and Home Goods were the same. I thought TJ Maxx was just clothes. Thanks for the tip!

  47. How funny, I just made a similar cork board for my kitchen. I haven't had any problem using regular pins on the thin cork. Even though the pin hits the cardboard, there is enough cork to hold the pin in place.

    It looks adorable Jen!

    ReplyDelete
  48. WOW this is so inspiring. I LOVE what you created, it is so great and works so well in that corner!

    ReplyDelete
  49. Love, love, love this! I'm putting together things for my office and this is exactly what I need ... will use the same fabric as I used for the valance and the throw cushions for the chair. You are such an inspiration ... can't wait to start working on my new old place!

  50. I LOVE it!! My heart is racing a zillion times a second!!! I need that fabric in my like now lol...I never got a chance to comment on your Vlog! Awesomness girl!! I watched it with my 10 year old daughter who thought you were so cool.(she has a very HUGE crush on Johnny Depp as well) the music was a hit and the questions you answered were the exact ones that I was curious about:) Thank you so much! Keep up the great work.I see wonderful things in your future xo

  51. Oh my gosh I LOVE that! The fabric looks so great with your paint color. I defiantly think that you should paint that dresser white. Maybe some new hardware too. Looks like a great storage unit :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. OMG... it's gorgeous Jen!! What fantabulous fabric! I wouldn't be able to pin anything on it though... it's just such a stunning piece of art!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Have to ask, where did you buy that FABULOUS rug in your laundry room? I saw it on Pinterest and screamed out loud, a little, when I saw it here!! :)
    Thanks!!! Nikki

    ReplyDelete
  54. Wow! That fabric is amazing. Love what you've done so far.

    ReplyDelete
  55. LOVE IT! How handy is having the laundry room right there? I can only dream of tossing in a load after putting the baby to bed and then switching it before bed. Ours is in the basement and as they say "out of sight, out of mind". We have timed billing here, so power costs more during peak times (8am-8pm Mon-Fri). It's a good thing for the environment, but I need to get more organized to do the laundry and run the dishwasher etc in the no-peak times! As always, thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Great job!! And the best way to look at cutting up a perfectly good shower curtain is to look at all the fabric you got for $15 and the possibilities you still have to make with it! You got a great price and the exact look you wanted!!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Thanks for the mention, Jen!!! And I am so glad that you could find it! Isn't it the best!? I may have to head back to TJs to seek out another awesome pattern for my own pinboard project! Mind if I mention this mention on my tiny little blog (UnadornedGratification.blogspot.com)?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Gorgeous!!! I saw that shower curtain at my local Home Goods. I wouldn't have thought about cutting up a shower curtain for a project, but now I will. Awesome idea and you saved yourself some nice money. Your office is really turning out extremely nice. I can't wait to see your next project for this space. :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. I absolutely love how this came out! What is the brand of the shower curtain?

    ReplyDelete
  60. How beautiful is that! love the fabric...i don't know if i could cover it up!!

  61. So beautiful! I love Home Goods. I need to get back there to buy some tablecloths that I plan on turning into curtains. The curtains I keep finding are so bland. Want something to perk up a dark living room :)

    ReplyDelete
  62. I've used shower curtains as closet doors for Natalie's room but never thought of just cutting up the fabric. Sometimes there are tons of pieces that aren't ruined after use. I'm a huge believer of reusing anything. That fabric is so "you" too. :)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I just now realized that the colors palette I've been working towards for my family room & my studio space is almost exactly the same as yours! What a lovely coincidence because your spaces are just so amazing and I can only hope to one day achieve such fabulousness.

  64. Your new pinboard is gorgeous, but your orchid looks unhappy- the leaves should be stiffer than that. If they feel like floppy dog ears when you pick them up, check the water situation. If you water those orchids more than once a week, typically you're watering them too much.

  65. I'm dying to know what you do with that dresser. I have almost the same one with a matching nightstand and taller version dresser too. I'm afraid of the work it will take to get those three pieces attractive. They are an eyesore in our bedroom ...

    ReplyDelete
  66. @Anonymous - I totally have to get my rear in gear and do that dresser... I decided that I couldn't pick the color until I am 100% complete with some of the other projects in the space. Stay tuned! xoxo!

  67. Only problem is...you might have trouble pinning things over top of the beautiful fabric! LOL

  68. i really like how this looks, but i wondered what type of material is the shower curtain?

    ReplyDelete
  69. @ jenny, It's a thinner silk material.

  70. I was just wondering where I could find a frame like that in order to do this project?

    ReplyDelete
  71. @anonymous,

I actually found the frame at a Salvation Army, I got lucky. It's a matter of scouring thrift stores and even craigslist for something similar.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm just wondering what's the inside of the dresser? Thanks.

  74. I love the fabric you used...it is my bedspread and shower curtain design :) Your project turned out beautifully.

    ReplyDelete
  75. i'm in love with that wall color, could you please give me the paint name please please

    ReplyDelete
  76. I love this corkboard and I've had it pinned for quite a while! I bought an old frame from the antique shop because I loved the ornate look of it, but it doesn't have a back. Any suggestions how to make this without the back? Thanks for your help!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You could add a layer of cardboard or use a really thin sheet of wood veneer from the Home Improvement store to create a backing for the frame. :) We have done both and either option should work with this project.
