54 Reader Space: Radiant Closet Redo

We all have certain things that makes us giddy inside and weak at the knees.  For some, it may be chocolate cake.  For others, it may be your spouse {let's hope right!?}  For me, it is closet offices! {and my hubs of course!}

Closet office spaces might not work for everyone since closets are often times valuable and limited space, but if you have a spare one to work with {or one that is less than functional for storage}, they are quite the clever solution for a nice tucked away workspace.

Oh boy, where do I begin!
I just recently discovered your blog and have so much fun reading and taking ideas from it. You are an inspiration!

My hallway closet was a mess. More than a mess, it was a dumping place for all things dirty.
With a 3 bedroom house and 4 little ones, we could use all the space we could get, so I got to work on it.

I desperately needed a space/office of my own, so I decided to turn the hallway closet into an office space!

Although it was suppose to be a one weekend project, other things got in the way, so it took us longer than expected, but we are finally done {hence the doors that need to be put on} and couldn't be more excited!

The closet inside needed some work. I had never painted it, there was one, too high of a shelf to reach and we had never carried through the hardwood floor in there.

After all of that had been done, I got to working on making the space functional AND pretty.
I wanted there to be a focal point, so I painted the main wall with gray and white stripes. I am totally in love with it and wonder why on earth I hadn't tackled this project sooner!

After that, it didn't take much. Some organizing essentials from IKEA {only the best place ever} and some DIY projects pulled this space together in no time.

For all the materials to make this space look the way it looks, it cost me a total of about $80. Seriously.

I pretty much had everything I needed.

The desk and shelf boards are the existing ones that were already in there, all it took was a coat of paint {which I already had}, the frames on the left were $.99 each from Goodwill, the magazine and photo holder boxes were a total of $22, the "laugh" sign I've had for years.

The mason jar project was something hubby whipped out in an evening and cost about $7. Super easy and functional!

We plan on putting in some foldable doors, so the kids stay away from the laptop, but until then, I love walking by and seeing it. It puts a smile on my face every time!!!

Thank you for considering this project!

Vera

Less than functional right!?  Not any longer.  It doesn't even look like it is the same closet, I was completely blown away!

Swoon right?!  Here are a few more detailed shots...

  • The closet was originally a dumping ground for dirty clothes, now it's a divine home office!  What a difference and such a great way to bring in a whole new "room" to their home!
  • She painted stripes to give it the feeling of a room vs. a closet.  Paint always is the best way to transform any project on a budget!
  • She used many supplies she already had on hand and thrift store finds.
  • The mason jar holders are a great way to maximize her desk space and offer up creative wall storage!
  • She brought in fresh flowers!  Just lovely!
  • She hung those adorable photos from string and mini-clothes pins.  Such a simple and fun way to display happy moments!
  • She went to my favorite shopping spot {IKEA} for super inexpensive storage solutions so everything has a nice uniform look and keeps her new workspace clutter free.
  • I adore that chair.  Everything about it is just sweet as pie!

One more heart smiling jaw dropping before and after moment?

Major kudos to Vera for making such a lovely space for herself on an incredible budget {seriously, only $80!!}.  You can find more details over on her blog here.

Knowing what she was able to accomplish for under $100 really impressed me and got me wondering...  What one project that totaled in under one hundred clams made a major happy impact on you and your home?

ATTENTION!!  Want to be featured in a Reader Space edition?  Have an awesome organizing story to share?  I am looking for projects that have made a positive impact to your life.  Please submit your story and photos here and I would heart to feature them right here, on the blog!!  Photos should be high resolution and unedited.  Please include a description of the project, including any costs, inspiration, and how it has changed your life and routine for the better!  Oh, and no worries my friends, we will NEVER judge "before" pictures because that just wouldn't be nice!  Only love goes on at this blog!

  13. I LOVE it! I'm wondering about the canning jar pencil thing. I'm a *little* obsessed with canning jars, and I would love to make (read:have hubby make) some of those for our homeschool room.

  15. Oh it is absolutely beautiful Vera. Thank you so much for sharing it. Two details that I noticed and find particularly appealing are the flowers and the rug. I just love how you arranged your flowers using two separate vases on one pretty tray. It's formal and yet relaxed. It reminds me of the South. And resting your feet on that oh-so-soft rug must be just delicious!

  21. Eeeee! I did the same sort of thing. I turned my entire hallway into a craft room. Yes, it was under a hundred dollars. I made a desk like the little office, upcycled/repurposed items, and found things at yard sales. It is lots of fun creating these small spaces.

  24. This is seriously inspiring. I have a linen closet at the top of my stairs that only houses a few extra blankets/ bed linens and a whole slew of rarely used bags/purses. I could easily find new homes for everything in there and repurpose that closet into something we desperately need - a Laundry room! Keep an eye out for it. I'm definitely going for it thanks to this closet makeover!

  25. What a fabulous transformation! I've had several of these non-functional closet spaces before and had no idea what to do with them. Thank you for the inspiration!

  26. This is AWESOME. I really wish I could paint my apartment. I have a closet office but it is definitely not this awesome.

  27. I just love this closet office! Its such a functional use of the space. Isn't it amazing how much paint can transform a blank wall? The best $100 I ever spent was when I stenciled a wall in my bedroom - check it out!

  29. So pretty! I love everything about it! You mentioned wanting foldable doors to hide the computer. Do you have them in other areas? I'm asking because we have three closets with bifold doors and they drive me crazy! My husband has had to fix them several times because they kept getting stuck on the carpet. Plus, my son has gotten his fingers caught in them trying to close them. Would drapes work, or maybe somebody else has some ideas? Really it's none of my business, but I would just hate for you to put doors in, and then not love the space as much, because it is just gorgeous!

  30. I'm with Jen! The bifold doors in our house drove me nuts and have been relegated to the attic. Maybe you could store the laptop out of reach?

Love, Love, Love what you've done with the place!!!
