22 Reader Space: A Handmade Nursery

Today's space makes my cheeks hurt.  I have been smiling since I first saw it.  It is a true story of a room built over time and how creating things on your own not only saves you major moola, but also gives special meaning to the space.

Morgan runs a DIY blog in which she shares her adventures in renovating, decorating and handmade projects.  She recently submitted a project to me in which she embellished a hamper in the nursery she was working on for her sweet little lady.  I took a look at the project and instantly got sucked into the blog and the entire nursery process.  I noticed her attention to details, and the ways that she handmade so many items for the space, that I begged her to let me feature the whole room instead.  Lucky for us, she said, "Yes!"

Morgan began working on the nursery when she was 7 months pregnant, creating a happy place that was gender neutral since they were waiting to find out the gender until the little bambina was born.  Seven months later, she was still putting the finishing touches on the space, showing that the room was built with love and took time to get to a completed state.

But lets get down to the nitty gritty details.  What all did she create by hand to make this space so fantastic?

Let's start with the amazing tree shelves!

Her husband's Aunt and mother painted the graphics on the wall, and they enhanced the tree branches by building in custom shelving!  Seriously, how sweet is that?!

Almost every single fabric feature you see within the room, was sewn.  Yep, the crib bedding...

The curtain panels and the charming mobile....

Even the basket liners for her changing table...

And the bin liners in the shelving unit {which she also took the time to line with beautiful fabric!}

I love that she had all of the basket liners sewn, allowing her to select fabric that worked within the space she was designing.

When it came time to do the re-cover the glider, she was savvy and took the fabric to her local dry cleaner, which saved her oodles of time and money!  Such a great tip!

I love that she added a small play table to the corner of the room.  It will serve as the perfect place to do some arts and crafts or to play with toys!  Check out those table legs!

This room is a great example of patience and love.  All of the handmade elements will be forever be cherished and give the room a warm and cozy feeling.

A huge hug to Morgan for sharing her beautiful space with us and for setting such a great DIY example!

Let's chat about your most cherished handmade goodies.  What is one thing that you have made, or someone made for you, that has a special place in your own home {and heart}?

  1. How adorable! That literally makes me swoon :)

My most cherished handmade is a quilt that my mother made for me when I was in about the 1st or 2nd grade. It is made of hexagons and completely handsewn! The fabric includes many of my baby outfits and my mother sewed most of it while sitting at my grandmother's hospital bed as she was passing away. It is in serious need of repair but I still cuddle up to it almost every day!

  2. WOW! The attention to detail is absolutely amazing!!! i adore that tree bookshelf!!

my grandmother made me a raggedy-ann doll when I was born. It had a little heart sewn on the bottom of the foot that said "I love you". It was always very special to me, my mom even dressed me up like raggedy-ann for halloween! :)

  6. I have a blanket that my Mom crocheted me for Mother's Day one year. It's one of favourite go to items when I want to get cozy with a book and a cup of tea. A few years ago we moved away from my parents, and whenever I got feeling a little homesick I had the blanket to curl up with. No store bought blanket would be the same!

  7. Oh I'm swooning over this whole room. Thanks for sharing! Adsolutely so sweet. Great memories for that little one.

My mom always made me sock monkeys. I used to sleep with them when I was young, so she would have to replace them at some point and would just make me a new one. When those came back recently it brought back memories of my childhood. I actually bought a tree ornament sock monkey last year.

  8. Beautiful! I wish I had put more thought into my nursery as it has served 3 babies. I did handmake twin sized bed quilts for all 3 of my children so they will all have a forever gift from me even when they outgrow the youthful fabrics and design. I'm already planning the next quilts for them as they get older :)

  9. Beautiful room!

I spy your cloth diapers. I'm glad I found out about them for my second child-we've been using them for 3 years. Hopefully people will notice them in your blog post too--they are very modern now.

  11. Adorable!! She did a wonderful job!! I cross-stitched each of my girls a picture that they picked out. My oldest one picked out the picture with the two kids and the angel behind them. My youngest daughter picked out a picture of two girls playing dress-up in the attic. Both are framed and in their rooms.

  15. Oh my goodness, the cuteness factor of this nursery is off the charts!
One of my favorit hand made items is a little ceramic girl that my mom painted for me when I was in high school. She painted her to resemble me and I cherish it so much because my mom is anything BUT crafty. It was truly a work of love for her to do that and I have kept it to this day. She has a special place of honor in my craft room.

  16. This is really cute! My mom used to think of different ways to make my room fun. We used to hang different toys and paper-figures on the ceiling and others we glued to the windows. I really enjoyed that! :)

  17. Absolutely precious. And I LOVE that tip of taking the glider's cushions to the dry cleaners to have them reupholster them!! I checked out her blog and it only cost her $15 per cushion while an actual upholstery company quoted $300 for the whole job! Wow - great savings and it looks precious!!

  19. Lovely!

We co-sleep with our son so we didn't do the nursery thing. When it comes time for him to get his own room I'm sooo excited to decorate it! I think it's more fun because you can take risks that you wouldn't in another room.
