63 IHeart a Good Weekend Update! {Part 2}

I shared with you last week what a little paint did to our master bedroom, it has made all the difference to that space.  It feels more complete, more inviting, more serene...  LOVE.

Because I adored the gray blue color so much, and because I still had a fair amount remaining when the project was finished up, I decided to make another update.

Yep, my oldest son's bedroom was the next victim in my painting antics.  I just quickly snagged my favorite Wooster angle paint brush and got right to work.

However, I didn't repaint his whole room.  Just the orange.  Loved it.  But it didn't mesh at all with the rest of the house.  And the room was getting a little technicolor for me.  Sooooo.... out with the orange, in with blue.  Well, blue gray that is!

Here is a look at how a little paint is making a whole heck of a lot of difference in yet another space in our casa.

The color, Behr's Burnished Metal {keeping Behr's Cayman Bay on the lower level}, and it did the same thing for our son's space that it did for ours.  Brought in cohesion, serenity and a more a cleaner feeling.

And true story, but my husband didn't like it as much as before.  He liked the orange better.  I guess I can't win them all, even though personally like the gray blue better.  Totally a battle of the sexes thing!  And Preston likes his room either way {because he doesn't want to hurt his mom's feelings I am sure}, but all that matters in the end is that he is happy with it!

I still have more up my sleeve in this space, like a DIY headboard and hanging photos and some hooks and swapping out his dresser.  But it's absolutely coming together!

So I just gotta know, which do you prefer, the orange or gray blue?   Any quick weekend updates you want to share us?  Who was working on their junk drawer{s}?  Or their photo organizing?  Or just something else fun, totally not home or organizing related?  Spill the beans!

  1. That blue gray makes such a difference in the room - it looks so great!

We spent the weekend working on our master bedroom renovation which I cannot WAIT to share this week! :)

  2. His room is so great. SO many fun ideas I might have to use! I like the orange, but the gray looks great. Such a nice combo and you have all the fun pops of color in there. I started a million little projects and left quite the trail this weekend. Oh boy!

  3. I liked the orange, but then saw the grey and I like that better. :) I'm a sucker for grey, though. We recovered the dining room chairs. I went from a beautiful striped silk that had seen better days (and it's only been 5 years!) to a solid velvet. Not sure about the solid at first, but the fabric looks 10 times better...so now I want to incorporate some pattern with drapes! We'll see what I come up with...

  4. I'm loving the new look! The blue grey looks awesome.

  5. That looks great! It makes the bright blue not as shocking as it was with the equally-bright orange. It's definitely a calmer look. The two blues are great complements for each other.

  6. Well, I'm a Chicago Bears fan so there is a special place in my heart for blue and orange . . . but in my own house I'd definitely go with the gray!

  7. Love the change...a little more subdued for a grown up boy. :) And he still has lots of pops of color in there!

  8. At first thought I loved the orange but you still have the accents in the room so I think the gray looks nice too. Definitely love your storage in here. I'll be working on a big boy room sometime in the next couple of months and I'll be back for some inspiration.

I finished up a photo gallery wall that I blogged about if you'd like to check it out http://lifewiththeanthonys.blogspot.com. Still deciding if I love it.

  9. They both look great, but for a kids room, I'm with your husband on this one in preferring the orange! I don't really see orange working in many other ways, so that was definitely the way to do it.

But then again, I'm probably only saying that because I'm not brave enough to do orange on the walls in my boys' room. We're rocking some tone-on-tone blue stripes and just sticking with pops of orange in the bedding.

But that gray color is great! I'm looking for the perfect blue gray for our living room/kitchen area so I'll definitely have to check out the Burnished Metal :)

  10. I LOVED the orange and wanted to do my son's room the same way. HOWEVER, now that I see the blue gray..it looks so bright and clean and happy.

I dunno. I guess I am with your son.

  11. I was not a huge fan of the orange, but I have to say now that the blue/gray is up there I do prefer something that contrasts a little more. Maybe a grass green on top.. Still in the cool colors to keep it on the calmer side, but has a little more interest than the blue/gray. Just my thoughts.

You have a beautiful home and I love that you are not afraid of color. I love, love your blog! Keep on inspiring!!

  12. The blue/orange combo always makes me think of the Florida Gators. And being a true LSU girl, I much prefer the new blue/gray. LOL.

  13. The orange looked cool, but it was a bit abrasive. I really like the gray blue better for sure. Great idea.

  14. I like the brightness of the orange and the calmness of the gray, so I'm good either way. Love how you did the little amount on top though it looks so great!! I also got caught up on my Project Life this weekend. So happy to get 2 months worth of scrapbooking done in less than 2 hours!

  15. I'm loving it! As someone else posted it seems as if it's a more "grown up" feel. I know I have asked you in the past but I'm wondering if you can tell me the brand name of those clear bins w/the green handles. I know you said you got them from Target and I bought one similar to that bin it was the "RE" brand from Target but it seems as if it's smaller than the ones you have. Or maybe it's just the picture making them look bigger.

  16. I was so excited to see the first picture with the orange. My son's room is also blue and orange (we just have orange curtains). The gray is nice, but I think the orange is more fun.
In case you want to see.. here is my nursery:

  17. My vote is for the new look. I was snowed in all week, we live in the Pacific northwest. I got a lot accomplished. Like under our kitchen sink, cleaned out the fridge and freezer organized our food, linen closet. Next I'm working on simplifying our space. Its not as easy as it looks. Sigh.

  18. I love the oranged, but do agree that the blue looks much nicer. More of a cleaner look. Great choice. :)

  19. I like the blue! It feels more calm. This weekend, I worked on my Project Life album. Before your post, I didn't even knew it existed! I LOVE it. I feel like I can actually keep up with it. Thank you so much! I also worked on my scrap booking area.

  20. I love the new color. The orange is an awesome accent, but for me (granted, I'm not a little boy) the orange paint would be too bright!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love the grey color more. Calm and cohesive and still fun. Looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Love the grey blue! Much more calming indeed! Have you considered painting the dresser? I'm sure you have :) Can't wait to see the headboard.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I really liked the orange better. I guess I am a little biased towards orange and blue because of my love for Auburn University.....War Eagle!! Either way the room looks awesome and you are super talented!!

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love the orange. I have orange in my living room, but I'm beginning to lean toward to softer colors, they are more relaxing. I think you are influencing my taste.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I love the color Orange; it is my favorite color along with blue; but for the room, the gray blue looks best!
So this weekend I gathered 2 big bags and a pile full of stuff for a yard sale I'm participating in this next weekend. It feels so good to get rid of stuff that is just taking up space in my house! AND... my husband and I made up a budget for the next several months to work toward eliminating out debt. We're cleaning out ALL aspects of our life, and it feels SO GOOD!

  26. I liked the orange better, but that's no surprise to me - orange is my favorite color! :P

  27. Oh man, huge project this week! Taking my living room and kitchen from crazy Whooville to calming Leave it to Beaver. My colors were Best Buy blue and Incredible Hulk green. Very Ikea like. But I am sick of the bright colors. So the living room will be a "Vanilla Latte" color and the kitchen a sweet aqua. I am adding slashes of red to add to the retro look. Hopefully will be done this weekend!

PS. I like the blue/grey color you did the best!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Personally I love the new blue colour! It looks so fantastic and a touch more sophisticated. Perfect!

    ReplyDelete
  29. The blue gray all the way, but I'm not a big fan of orange! Good work! Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I love the blue in place of the orange, it makes the room a tad bit more grown up for your little man but still fun and age appropriate! <3

  31. I liked it with the orange, but they both look good. (And, orange is my favorite color - so happy!) With either color, it's such a great room for a little boy! So many great ideas - thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I love the orange accents with the current gray wall...BTW where did you get the orange bins in the shelf?

    ReplyDelete
  33. It looks amazing! It's so crazy what just a little bit of paint can do for a room. You did a great job! :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I love it! The room is still colorful because of all of the accents but now it isn't too overpowering.

    Looks great!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I like the new color. It looks great. It is such a cool room. I bet your son loves to spend time in there.

Can you share how you make your headboard? We have been trying to decide if we want to buy a new bed. I would love to see how difficult or easy it is to make one.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I like them both, but probably favor the gray-blue a little more. I, however, accomplished nothing this weekend and it felt great. Gotta have a lazy weekend once in a while. ;) But I have a whole lot of catching up to do this week!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am not a big fan of orange, in fact I loathe it. But surprisingly, I didn't mind it in this room. But I like the grey a lot more. It seems more sophisticated!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I too like them both but favor the orange :)
However either way, you did a great job and I.LOVE.HIS.ROOM!

  39. I am a new follower of your blog and I love it! And removing the orange to your son's room made a huge difference. On a side note, I absolutely adore how you have it decorated and the colors you chose. And most importantly, thank you for sharing! Have a fabulous evening.

  40. Like both, but love the gray blue better.

This weekend we finally finished up your January Challenge Jen. Better late then never. Here is the link to my blog and what I did with my office paperwork. http://thedecorscene.blogspot.com/2011/02/finally-completed-project-paper.html
Thanks for the great challenges Jen! :D

  41. I admit the blue-gray is more calm (which is probably good for a bedroom) but I prefer the orange. I think it just adds the punch that the blue-gray lacks. But hey, who am I to know? :)

  42. Jen

Do you mind if I ask, is that framed picture of the number plates a print or are they actually the number plates cut out into the shape of the State? Thanks

  43. Thanks for all the great comments!

Amanda, I have considered painting the dresser but it is a cheesy laminate finish that really isn't worth the effort to refinish, plus, the dresser isn't the right size for the space and is pretty wobbly. I have an extra dresser from our old spare bedroom that I am going to refinish instead! :)

Anonymous, the orange boxes are from Ikea: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90150518

I will absolutely share when we do the DIY headboard! Wish us luck!

Anne, here is the link to the map poster: http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?startat=/getposter.asp&APNum=2642712&CID=A13275504717440E89A1B1FB3CA0FD94&PPID=1&Search=united%20states%20map&f=t&FindID=0&P=1&PP=159&sortby=PD&c=c&page=1

    Thanks again!

  44. I like the gray but then again gray is my favorite color. I do have to wonder though...if you've turned all the closets into desks/workspaces, where do you guys put all your clothes?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Hi Cathy!

The kiddos use dresser's for their clothes. I find this to be an easier option than hanging since they can help out with putting clothes away and picking them out!

They also fold their clothing and we work on keeping the total count of each type of article {shirts, pants, etc...}, limited. Simplified things!

Here is a post on the subject: http://iheartorganizing.blogspot.com/2010/03/march-featured-space-kids-clothing.html

    Thanks!

    xoxo,
    Jen

  46. I really liked the orange, but orange is my favorite color so I might be a little biased.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think they both look great. I love the orange best, but I do think the gray looks more grown-up.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I love the orange! Thanks for the inspiration, my son is about to go from a little boy room to an older one and wants 3 colors! I love the splash of color at the top. Where oh where did you get those plastic containers for the legos? This is my constant challenge!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I loved the pop of orange, but I absolutely love this gray much better. I think it lends itself to the space and is a color that can grow with him. LOVE IT and everything you've done in his room:)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Thanks for that link to the poster Jen! I'll check it out. Would look great in my son's room.

  51. I'm with you on this one- I love the new blue/gray color! More cohesive. Either way looks very nice tho

  52. Keiko, the clear bins are Rubbermaid storage bins, I found them at Target eons ago! But they fit the Expedit perfectly!

  53. New blue/gray...the orange was too over-powering being opposite on the spectrum to the blue.

    ReplyDelete
  54. The gray/blue looks nice but I have to admit, I did love the orange. :) The room still looks great though. Please tell me it's not always that clean, lol! If so, could your son please come teach my son? ;)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I like it better with the gray/blue...it looks more restful which I think is always good for a place where you want your kid to sleep & study. Nice!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I think the orange was better!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi, love his room!!! Mind me asking where you got the dark wood shelving unit that you are using for legos and the orange crates? I love how deep the shelves are and would like to find something similar for my son.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Hey Jen! I love the EXPEDIT shelving and was thinking about getting some for our apartment, but there's one issue. IKEA's website says the units need to be secured to the wall. Our apartment doesn't allow this kind of "securing," so I was wondering...is it really necessary to secure the unit to the wall or will it stand steady on its own?
